The IAPT@Flinders Service: adapting the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies model to the emergency department setting in Australia.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the implementation of an Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service at Flinders Medical Centre emergency department (IAPT@Flinders). IAPT, a population-based model of guided self-help for anxiety and depression delivered mainly by phone, was rolled-out nationally in the UK in 2010. There is a growing body of evidence demonstrating its clinical effectiveness and efficiency that can improve treatment adherence, reduce stigma, remove appointment attendance barriers and improve access for hard-to-reach populations. CONCLUSIONS: IAPT@Flinders was the test sit

Psychometric update of the Social Anxiety Screening Scale (SASS/EDAS) in a Spanish adolescent population.

The aim of this work was to update the validation of the Social Anxiety Screening Scale (SASS/EDAS) in a sample of Spanish adolescents. To achieve this, one study with a sample of 1489 students in secondary education, of ages 14 to 17 years, were carried out. The psychometric properties of EDAS were examined through confirmatory factor analysis, reliability (Cronbach's alpha), temporal stability (test-retest), and concurrent criterion validity. The results supported the three-independent-factor structure (avoidance, distress and interference), that showed best fit indices compared to alternati

Dissociative symptom trajectories during treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors for depressive or anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Dissociative symptoms often co-occur with depressive and anxiety disorders and may worsen treatment outcomes. Little is known about how different forms of dissociation - psychoform and somatoform - change during pharmacotherapy with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). OBJECTIVE: Our study examined changes in dissociative symptoms during SSRI treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders and whether they follow a distinct course or are associated with treatment outcomes. METHOD: We conducted a longitudinal naturalistic, observational study of 100 outpatients with depr

[Factors affecting psychological reserves in the patients presenting with chronic somatic diseases].

The present study included 105 patients suffering chronic somatic diseases (CSD). Their health status was estimated based on the brief multifactor questionnaire for personality (BMQP) analysis; Spielberg state trait anxiety inventory (STAI); the Beck depression scale with the use of the "patient's quality of life" method; the well-being, activity, and mood (WAM) self-assessment test, and the stress-tolerance self-assistance test. The impairment of psychological reserve was documented in 85.7% of the patients with CSD. The degree of CSD deterioration was shown to be related to the frequency of

Measuring Co-Presence and Social Presence in Virtual Environments - Psychometric Construction of a German Scale for a Fear of Public Speaking Scenario.

Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) applications use high levels of fidelity in order to produce high levels of presence and thereby elicit an emotional response for the user (like fear for phobia treatment). State of research shows mixed results for the correlation between anxiety and presence in virtual reality exposure, with differing results depending on specific anxiety disorders. A positive correlation for anxiety and presence for social anxiety disorder is not proven up to now. One reason might be that plausibility of the simulation, namely including key triggers for social anxiety

The immediate effect of a brief energy psychology intervention (Emotional Freedom Techniques) on specific phobias: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Specific phobia is one of the most prevalent anxiety disorders. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) has been shown to improve anxiety symptoms; however, their application to specific phobias has received limited attention. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study examined whether EFT, a brief exposure therapy that combines cognitive and somatic elements, had an immediate effect on the reduction of anxiety and behavior associated with specific phobias. DESIGN: The study utilized a crossover design with participants randomly assigned to either diaphragmatic breathing or EFT as the first treatmen

Validation of a Spanish version of the psychological inflexibility in pain scale (PIPS) and an evaluation of its relation with acceptance of pain and mindfulness in sample of persons with fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: Psychological flexibility has been suggested as a fundamental process in health. The Psychological Inflexibility in Pain Scale (PIPS) is one of the scales employed for assessing psychological inflexibility in pain patients. The aim of this study was to validate the Spanish version of the PIPS and secondly, to compare it to two other psychological constructs, the acceptance of pain and mindfulness scales. METHODS: The PIPS was translated into Spanish by two bilingual linguistic experts, and then, back-translated into English to assess for equivalence. The final Spanish version was

The salivary-α-amylase level after stroop test in anxious patients can predict the severity of anxiety.

Individuals with anxiety disorder often exhibit as imbalance in response to stressors. We sought to explore the relationship between physiological as well as psychological responses under acute mental stress and the severity of the disease. 20 Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) patients (14 males, mean age 46 ± 10 years) were confronted with the stroop test, during which salivary-α-amylase (sAA), salivary cortisol, and heart rate variability (HRV) were assessed. The results showed that stroop test as a stressor induced autonomic nervous response in GAD patients, which was mainly manifested as

A psychiatric and neuropsychological study of patients with untreated Graves' disease.

We studied 13 untreated Graves' disease subjects in a clinical research unit using endocrine, psychiatric, and neuropsychological assessments. We used SADS interviews, RDC, standardized symptom rating scales, and motor activity monitoring to update earlier studies and quantified psychiatric symptoms to elucidate any correlations between endocrine and psychiatric status. Nine of 13 subjects had major depression, 8/13 had generalized anxiety disorder, and 3/13 were hypomanic. Anxiety levels were much higher than in other hospitalized medical patients. Using a broad battery of neuropsychological

Human papillomavirus infection and anxiety: analyses in women with low-grade cervical cytological abnormalities unaware of their infection status.

BACKGROUND: Women testing positive for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection experience increased levels of anxiety that have been attributed to fears of stigmatization and developing cervical cancer. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between HPV infection and anxiety in women who were unaware they had been tested specifically for HPV, to determine if any anxiety experienced by HPV-positive women could be due to causes other than learning of test results. METHODS: This study was nested within a randomised controlled trial of management of women with abnormal cervic
