Colorectal Cancer Risk Perceptions Among Black Men in Florida.

PURPOSE: We examined colorectal cancer (CRC) risk perceptions among Black men in relation to socio-demographic characteristics, disease prevention factors, and personal/family history of CRC. METHODS: A self-administered cross-sectional survey was conducted in five major cities in Florida between April 2008 and October 2009. Descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression were performed. RESULTS: Among 331 eligible men, we found a higher proportion of CRC risk perceptions were exhibited among those aged ≥ 60 years (70.5%) and American nativity (59.1%). Multivariable analyses fou

Alice in Wonderland Syndrome as a Rare Presentation of Cryptogenic Stroke: A Case Report.

Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by perceptual distortions, including alterations in body image perception and time perception. This case report presents a 94-year-old female patient who exhibited visual and auditory hallucinations, including macropsia (perception of objects as larger than their actual size), suggestive of AIWS, following an ischemic stroke. Despite initial suspicions of AIWS, imaging revealed chronic infarcts in the posterior right parietal lobe and the left occipital lobe, suggesting a stroke etiology. Management focused on sy…

Human visual consciousness involves large scale cortical and subcortical networks independent of task report and eye movement activity.

The full neural circuits of conscious perception remain unknown. Using a visual perception task, we directly recorded a subcortical thalamic awareness potential (TAP). We also developed a unique paradigm to classify perceived versus not perceived stimuli using eye measurements to remove confounding signals related to reporting on conscious experiences. Using fMRI, we discovered three major brain networks driving conscious visual perception independent of report: first, increases in signal detection regions in visual, fusiform cortex, and frontal eye fields; and in arousal/salience networks inv

Bias in self-perceptions and internalizing and externalizing problems in adjustment during early adolescence: a prospective investigation.

We investigated bias in self-perceptions of competence (relative to parent ratings) for family, school, and peer domains as predictors of adjustment problems among 139 young adolescents over a 1-year period using a prospective design. Regressions examined measures of bias at Time 1 (T1) as predictors of ratings of internalizing and externalizing problems at Time 2 (T2), controlling for T1 adjustment ratings. For the family domain, curvilinear trends were found. Follow-up analyses revealed that for this domain both negative bias (self-perceptions less favorable than parent ratings) and positive

Using a structured, patient-centred, educational exchange to facilitate a shared conversation about stroke prevention medications.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of a structured patient-centred educational exchange to facilitate a shared conversation about stroke prevention medications. METHODS: Participants (18 years or older) with a principal diagnosis of stroke or transient ischaemic attack were purposively sampled from the stroke unit of a 780-bed teaching hospital in Australia and consented to participate in the study. A patient-centred educational exchange was conducted face to face at the bedside before discharge and by telephone post discharge. The structure of these sessions

Bioinspired Swallowing Soft Gripper with Toroidal Optical Waveguides for Multimodal Interactive Perception.

Multimodal soft grippers can adapt grasping strategies to diverse environments, yet integrating sensors under large, coupled deformations remains challenging. Inspired by the mechanosensation of sea anemones and their ability to swallow, this article presents a soft gripper that integrates eight toroidal optical waveguides to realize three modes-contacting, expansion, and swallowing-with continuous proprioceptive feedback. Deformation-induced optical attenuation, processed by machine-learning pipelines, enables perception of object shape, hardness, and surface texture. Experiments show a 0.04

Variability in auditory processing performance is associated with reading difficulties rather than with history of otitis media.

The nature and cause of auditory processing deficits in dyslexic individuals have been debated for decades. Auditory processing deficits were argued to be the first step in a causal chain of difficulties, leading to difficulties in speech perception and thereby phonological processing and literacy difficulties. More recently, it has been argued that auditory processing difficulties may not be causally related to language and literacy difficulties. This study compares two groups who have phonological processing impairments for different reasons: dyslexia and a history of otitis media (OM). We c

Immediate Manifestation of Ocular Decompression Retinopathy following Anterior Chamber Paracentesis.

Ocular decompression retinopathy (ODR) is a complication of rapid lowering of intraocular pressure (IOP) resulting in hemorrhages in multiple retinal layers. We report a case of ODR that developed within minutes following anterior chamber paracentesis in an adult female with primary open-angle glaucoma. A 61-year-old Black woman with primary open-angle glaucoma presented with marked elevation of IOP (46 mm Hg in the right eye and 30 mm Hg in the left) despite maximal medical therapy and bilateral selective laser trabeculoplasty. Vision in the right eye decreased from counting fingers at 3 feet

Actual and perceived weight status and its association with slimming and energy-balance related behaviours in 10- to 12-year-old European children: the ENERGY-project.

BACKGROUND: Both parents' and children's perception of children's weight status may be important predictors of slimming and energy-balance related behaviours, independent of children's actual weight status. OBJECTIVES: We examined the cross-sectional association of children's self-reported slimming and energy-balance related behaviours with children's (i) actual, (ii) self-perceived and (iii) parent-perceived weight status. METHODS: Data of 10- to 12-year-old European children and their parents were used. Multilevel logistic and linear regression analyses were performed, adjusting for age, g

The gastrorectal reflex in women with obstructed defecation.

This study evaluated the tonic response of the rectum to a meal in women with obstructed defecation. Fifteen control subjects and 60 women with obstructed defecation were studied. Total colonic transit time was normal in 30 patients (group I) and prolonged in the other 30 (group II). After over-night fasting an "infinitely compliant" polyethylene bag was inserted into the rectum. Rectal tone was assessed by measuring variations in bag volume with a computerized electromechanical air injection system. After an adaptation period of 30 min all subjects consumed a 450-kcal liquid meal. Postprandia

A bioinspired dual-modal laser-induced graphene tactile sensor for high-precision multimodal object recognition.

Developing multifunctional tactile sensors that combine multimodal perception with structural simplicity remains challenging for embodied perception. Inspired by trichoid sensilla on wasp antennae, we present a dual-modal bioinspired trichoid tactile sensor (BTTS) that integrates both piezoresistive and triboelectric effects. The BTTS consists of vertically aligned rough-substrate laser-induced graphene fibers (RLIGFs) formed on a laser-pretreated polyimide substrate, creating a hierarchical bionic architecture with staggered microstructures. This design produces distinguishable electrical sig

Human yaw rotation aftereffects with brief duration rotations are inconsistent with velocity storage.

In many sensory systems, perception of stimuli is influenced by previous stimulus exposure such that subsequent stimuli may be perceived as more neutral. This phenomenon is known as an aftereffect and has been studied for vision, audition, and some vestibular stimuli including roll and translation. Previous data on yaw rotation perception has focused on low-frequency stimuli on the order of a minute which may not be directly applicable to frequencies during ambulation. The aim of the current study is to look at the influence of yaw rotation on subsequent perception near 1 Hz, the predominant f

Disease progression and perceptions of health in patients with motor neurone disease.

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a useful paradigm for many progressive disabling neurological disorders and serves as a particularly opposite model for the study of patients' responses to progressive and irreversible disability. We studied the progression of disability and the patients' perception of their health in a group of MND patients (n = 14) for 6 months from diagnosis or soon after. A comparison group of similar age, gender ratio and initial disability on Barthel index were Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, admitted because of poor response to outpatient drug therapy and increasing dis

Space and motion perception and discomfort in air travel.

INTRODUCTION: The perception of comfort during air trips is determined by several factors. External factors like cabin design and environmental parameters (temperature, humidity, air pressure, noise, and vibration) interact with individual characteristics (anxiety traits, fear of flying, and personality) from arrival at the airport to landing at the destination. In this study, we investigated the influence of space and motion discomfort (SMD), fear of heights, and anxiety on comfort perception during all phases of air travel. METHODS: We evaluated 51 frequent air travelers through a modified

Overlapping activity periods in early visual cortex and posterior intraparietal area in conscious visual shape perception: a TMS study.

Parietal cortex is often activated in brain imaging studies on conscious visual processing, but its causal role and timing in conscious and nonconscious perception are poorly understood. We studied the role of posterior intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and early visual areas (V1/V2) in conscious and nonconscious vision by interfering with their functioning with MRI-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The observers made binary forced-choice decisions concerning the shape or color of the metacontrast masked targets and rated the quality of their conscious perception. TMS was applied 30, 60

A problem with auditory processing?

Recent studies have found associations between auditory processing deficits and language disorders such as dyslexia; but whether the former cause the latter, or simply co-occur with them, is still an open question.

Contributions of the human temporoparietal junction and MT/V5+ to the timing of interception revealed by transcranial magnetic stimulation.

To intercept a fast target at destination, hand movements must be centrally triggered ahead of target arrival to compensate for neuromechanical delays. The role of visual-motion cortical areas is unclear. They likely feed downstream parietofrontal networks with signals reflecting target motion, but do they also contribute internal timing signals to trigger the motor response? We disrupted the activity of human temporoparietal junction (TPJ) and middle temporal area (hMT/V5+) by means of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) while subjects pressed a button to intercept targets accelerated or
