Tonsils weigh in on flu-specific immunity.

Wagoner et al.1 use human tonsil organoids to uncover key immune mechanisms driving influenza vaccine responses. They identify Th1 cell frequencies as a critical predictor of neutralizing antibody responses to inactivated vaccines, providing new insights into vaccine effectiveness and paving the way for more targeted vaccine development in the future.

Development of tonsil stones during pregnancy.

Despite widespread anecdotal evidence of an increase in tonsil stone formation during pregnancy, including messages on internet pregnancy forums, there is little published research on this topic. Here we present three patients who experienced new or worsening of existing tonsil stones during various points of their pregnancy. Additionally, common presentations of tonsil stones as well as the medical and surgical management options are discussed. Physiological changes during pregnancy could be a contributing factor to an increase in tonsil stones during this period. Since patients may voice com

[Postoperative bleeding after tonsil surgery].

BACKGROUND: Tonsillectomy and tonsillotomy are common surgical procedures, especially among children and adolescents. Post-operative bleeding is a potentially alarming and dangerous complication. We wished to identify the prevalence of postoperative bleeding and associated risk factors in Ålesund hospital. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The study is based on a retrospective review of the records of all patients who underwent tonsil surgery at Ålesund hospital in the five-year period from 2015-2019. RESULTS: Of 1394 patients who underwent tonsil surgery, tonsillectomy was performed in 1285 patients and

Simultaneous enucleation of the tonsils in "Pickwickian patients".

Tonsillar surgery was, from the 19th century, the reference treatment for apneic patients. Adapting to the technical limitations of the time, surgeons devised ingenious procedures. The purpose of this historical note is to travel back to that time and rediscover one of the techniques favored by Chassaignac: "simultaneous enucleation" of the tonsils.

A Rare Tumor of Palatine Tonsils: Chondrolipoma.

Chondrolipomas are benign mesenchymal tumors that have two mature tissues simultaneously and emerge as a result of cartilaginous metaplasia in lipomas. They rarely occur in the head and neck area (1%-4%), and occur more frequently in the 60-70 years age group. Although there are cases of the nasopharynx, tongue, lip, and neck reported in the literature, we have been able to find only two cases on tonsils. The case of a 17-year-old male patient, who presented to our clinic complaining of dysphagia and was diagnosed with tonsillar chondrolipoma, is described here, along with the radiological, cl

Changing trends in pediatric tonsil surgery.

OBJECTIVES: We analyzed trends in tonsil surgery over a 10-year period in a single tertiary care hospital and evaluated the effects of these changes on use of hospital services and healthcare costs. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study based on data from databases at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Helsinki University Hospital, Helsinki, Finland. Children under 16 years of age with tonsillectomy (TE) or tonsillotomy (TT) performed during 2007-2016 were included in the study. RESULTS: In 10 years, 4979 tonsil surgeries were performed on 4951 children: TE in 3170 (64%) and TT

Hamartoma of Palatine Tonsil: A Rare Case.

Hamartomas are disorganized but benign masses composed of cells indigenous to the involved site. They have been reported in almost all organs but are rare in the head and neck region, especially the pharynx. We describe the case of a six-month-old male infant who presented with acute respiratory symptoms due to a pedunculated polypoid mass arising from his left palatine tonsil. He underwent a tonsillectomy and removal of the polyp after initial stabilization. Histopathological examination showed features consistent with hamartoma. The child had an uneventful recovery and follow-up after one ye

What is the cause of hypertrophia in asymmetric tonsils?

OBJECTIVES: Asymmetric tonsillar hypertrophy is a condition, confirmed by physical examination, that can be found in every age group. The aim of this study was to compare each tonsil through macroscopic and microscopic assessment of specimens and reveal the reasons that cause one tonsil to grow more than the other. METHODOLOGY: The study was carried out with 93 patients who wereindicated for tonsillectomy in the authors' Clinic. Of these 93 patients, seven cases who had clinically asymmetric but pathologically symmetric tonsils were excluded from the study. The presence of microscopicintraepi

Specified data for tonsil surgery in Germany.

Background: Tonsillectomy rates vary considerably among different states, regions, and times. This study was conducted to identify the prevalence of "chronic" tonsillitis, peritonsillar abscess, hypertrophy of the tonsils with and without adenoids in absolute and relative numbers in an 80 million people nation. Moreover, the number and rates of different surgical procedures to resolve either "chronic" tonsillitis, peritonsillar abscess, or upper airway obstruction due to (adeno)tonsillar hypertrophy over several years was evaluated in this study (tonsillectomy, adenotonsillectomy, tonsillotomy…

Prevalence of the Helicobacter pylori in the tonsils and adenoids.

INTRODUCTION: There is an ongoing debate about the existence and effects of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) in adenotonsillar tissue. OBJECTIVE: A clinical study was conducted to assess the existence of Hp in the adenoid and/or adenotonsillar tissues, which were surgically excised due to chronic adenotonsillitis. METHODS: Phosphoglucosamine mutase gene for the detection of Hp and cytotoxin-associated gene as virulence gene were examined in 84 adenotonsillar tissues obtained from 64 patients and patients' serum by using polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Hp IgG was detected in 57 (89%) patients' s…

Factors associated with hypertrophy of the lingual tonsils.

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors that may be associated with lingual tonsil hypertrophy (LTH). STUDY DESIGN: Case series with chart review. SETTING: Tertiary academic center. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Retrospective chart review identified 380 patients from August 2013 to April 2014 with graded lingual tonsils, documented during routine flexible laryngoscopy. Lingual tonsils were graded using a 0 to 4 scale: 0 = complete absence of lymphoid tissue, 1 = lymphoid tissue scattered over tongue base, 2 = lymphoid tissue covers entirety of tongue base with limited thickness, 3 = lymphoid tissue 5 to 10

Robotic approaches to the pharynx: tonsil cancer.

Treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx is challenging because of its effects on speech and swallowing, which may affect quality of life. Transoral robotic surgery may be an effective alternative to open surgery. Robotic lateral oropharyngectomy is best suited for early stage oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, with the goal of avoiding or reducing the use or dose of adjuvant therapies. Successful robotic lateral oropharyngectomy requires appropriate training, detailed preoperative planning, organized operating room setup to obtain exposure, an understanding of the pertinent

Beryllium concentration in pharyngeal tonsils in children.

Power plant dust is believed to be the main source of the increased presence of the element beryllium in the environment which has been detected in the atmospheric air, surface waters, groundwater, soil, food, and cigarette smoke. In humans, beryllium absorption occurs mainly via the respiratory system. The pharyngeal tonsils are located on the roof of the nasopharynx and are in direct contact with dust particles in inhaled air. As a result, the concentration levels of beryllium in the pharyngeal tonsils are likely to be a good indicator of concentration levels in the air. The presented study

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the tonsil.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare neoplasm that occurs extranodally and nodally. The following case report describes a 24-year-old male patient who suffered from FDCS of the tonsil. He presented at the ENT Department of the University Hospital Magdeburg with throat pain that had lasted for 3 months. There were neither B symptoms nor abnormal fatigue. An extended tonsillectomy was performed. The morphological and immunohistochemical findings confirmed the diagnosis of FDCS. FDCS should be considered as an important differential diagnosis in spindle cell tumors of the tonsil.
