Treatment of Invasive Cervical Resorption in a Central Incisor by Intentional Replantation: A Case Report.

Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) is an aggressive pathological condition that can affect any permanent tooth. This process is characterized by replacement of the tooth structure with granulomatous fibrovascular or fibro-osseous tissue. Despite its asymptomatic nature, ICR can lead to tooth loss. This study reports a case of ICR in a 15-year-old boy with a history of dental trauma. The patient had a diagnosis of ICR in tooth #21. After considering the risks of an external surgical approach and exclusive endodontic treatment, intentional re-implantation combined with extraoral composite resin …

Enamel Veneer Rehabilitation of a Premolar to an Incisor After Autotransplantation.

Tooth autotransplantation is one of the methods used for tooth loss rehabilitation in children. Premolars are usually used as autotransplants requiring esthetic alterations. The purpose of this paper is to present an innovative, alternative and inexpensive way to restore auto-transplanted teeth using the crown of the tooth of the recipient site. A seven-year-old male with a non-contributory medical history presented with an intrusion of his permanent maxillary right central incisor. The tooth underwent orthodontic extrusion using fixed appliances but eventually showed signs of ankylosis. At 10…

Survival analysis of root-resected molars from 1 to 13.4 years: A retrospective cohort study.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: While root resective therapy may extend the longevity of a molar, data on patient selection and outcomes of root resection are scarce. PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective cohort study was to analyze the survival of root-resected molars and investigate factors affecting the decision and outcomes of the therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patient- and tooth-related data from participants who had received root resection between 1999 and 2022 were collected. Cox regression was used to build predictive models for time-to-tooth loss based on predictors-initial diagnoses (ca…

How strong is the evidence for the need to restore posterior bounded edentulous spaces in adults? Grading the quality of evidence and the strength of recommendations.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether or not untreated bounded edentulous spaces (BES) can cause patients problems because of migration of unopp … ns. RESULTS: The available evidence demonstrated that for most cases occlusal changes in BES after tooth loss might be limited (on average up to 2mm). The quality of evidence was regarded as very low, however. CONCLUSIONS: Tooth replacement should not necessarily be regarded as the mainstay of therapy for posterior BES, although more robust studies are nec …

Bilaterally impacted maxillary canines: a case report in an adult.

A case of bilateral maxillary canine impaction with incomplete lateral incisor transposition in an adult is reported. The case was treated by relocating the canines in their correct position in the arch. The impacted teeth were driven through the sockets of the extracted deciduous teeth. The periodontal status during and after relocation of the transposed impacted canines was evaluated. Remineralization of bone between the lateral incisor and the canine was observed during treatment on the left side, while it was delayed on the right. Two years after the end of treatment, no loss of periodonta

Prevalence of oral pathologic findings in an ancient pre-Columbian archeological site in the Atacama Desert.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of oral pathologic findings in an ancient culture that inhabited the Atacama Desert. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic examination was performed on the remains of 83 individuals unearthed from a prehistoric burial ground. A total of 57 skeletal remains achieved appropriate inclusion criteria, from which estimated age at death, gender, ante- and postmortem tooth loss, prevalence and location of caries, apical periodontitis sequela, alveolar bone resorption and attrition were recorded. RESULTS: From the analyzed skeletal remains (13 male, 22 female and …

Effect of orthodontic treatment on the periodontal tissues.

Reduced periodontal support is a challenge that clinicians often face during rehabilitation of compromised dentition. The close and intricate relationship between the periodontal tissues and the processes of tooth movement suggest that adjunct orthodontic therapy may play an important role in overcoming these problems. On the other hand, excessive movement of teeth beyond the anatomic boundaries of the alveolar process is commonly believed to contribute to further destruction of the periodontal tissues. This review evaluates the clinical effects of various orthodontic tooth movements on the su

Oro-dental characteristics of three siblings with Papillon-Lefevre syndrome.

Papillon-Lefevre syndrome (PLS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder, showing oral and dermatological manifestations in the form of aggressive periodontitis, leading to the premature loss of both primary and permanent teeth at a very young age and palmar-plantar hyperkeratosis. It was first described by two French physicians, Papillon and Lefevre in 1924. Immunologic, genetic, or possible bacterial etiologies have been thought to account for etiopathogenesis of PLS. Severe gingival inflammation and periodontal destruction occurred after the eruption of primary teeth. This condition should wa

FGF signaling modulates mechanotransduction/WNT signaling in progenitors during tooth root development.

Stem/progenitor cells differentiate into different cell lineages during organ development and morphogenesis. Signaling pathway networks and mechanotransduction are important factors to guide the lineage commitment of stem/progenitor cells during craniofacial tissue morphogenesis. Here, we used tooth root development as a model to explore the roles of FGF signaling and mechanotransduction as well as their interaction in regulating the progenitor cell fate decision. We show that Fgfr1 is expressed in the mesenchymal progenitor cells and their progeny during tooth root development. Loss of Fgfr1

Chlorhexidine and preservation of sound tooth structure in older adults. A placebo-controlled trial.

The Trial to Enhance Elderly Teeth Health (TEETH) was designed to test the impact of regular rinsing with a 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX) solution on tooth loss, and the causes of tooth loss (caries, periodontal disease and trauma) were also investigated. This paper reports on the effectiveness of a 0.12% CHX solution for controlling caries using a tooth surface (coronal and root) survival analysis. A total of 1,101 low income elders in Seattle (United States) and Vancouver (Canada), aged 60-75 years, were recruited for a double-blind clinical trial and assigned to either a CHX (n = 550) or a plac…

The various forms of tooth resorption.

Tooth resorption refers to the loss of the organic and inorganic components of tooth structure by clastic cells. The complex and multifaceted nature of its aetiology, along with the several classification schemes published in the area, are likely to create confusion amongst researchers and clinicians, and may lead to compromised treatment decisions. Therefore, this paper will categorise and address tooth resorption based on aetiology in order to help clinicians diagnose and filter treatment options based on the pathophysiology of the resorption at hand. With recent advancements in the literatu

The Effects of Premature Tooth Extraction and Damage on Replacement Timing in the Green Iguana.

Reptiles with continuous tooth replacement, or polyphyodonty, replace their teeth in predictable, well-timed waves in alternating tooth positions around the mouth. This process is thought to occur irrespective of tooth wear or breakage. In this study, we aimed to determine if damage to teeth and premature tooth extraction affects tooth replacement timing long-term in juvenile green iguanas (Iguana iguana). First, we examined normal tooth development histologically using a BrdU pulse-chase analysis to detect label-retaining cells in replacement teeth and dental tissues. Next, we performed tooth

Autotransplantation of a maxillary third molar to replace a maxillary premolar with vertical root fracture.

AIM: To report the successful autotransplantation of a fully developed third molar that required nonsurgical and surgical interventions for tooth adaptation. SUMMARY: This case report describes the autotransplantation of a third molar with complete root development after the loss of a fractured premolar in a 47-year-old male. To allow better adaptation of the donor tooth, the buccal roots of the third molar were removed using a diamond bur and the canal entrances were filled. Recall examination 6 years after completion of root-canal treatment showed normal periodontal healing with absence of

Increased Presence of Complement Factors and Mast Cells in Alveolar Bone and Tooth Resorption.

Periodontitis is the inflammatory destruction of the tooth-surrounding and -supporting tissue, resulting at worst in tooth loss. Another locally aggressive disease of the oral cavity is tooth resorption (TR). This is associated with the destruction of the dental mineralized tissue. However, the underlying pathomechanisms remain unknown. The complement system, as well as mast cells (MCs), are known to be involved in osteoclastogenesis and bone loss. The complement factors C3 and C5 were previously identified as key players in periodontal disease. Therefore, we hypothesize that complement factor…

[Long-term follow-up of tooth transplantation from the functional and periodontal viewpoint].

The outcome of 81 of 99 patients being treated from 1980 to 1993 by transplantation of autologous teeth was investigated. The overall transplant survival rate was 91% after 1 year, 81% after 5 years and 70% after 9 years. The early loss of transplanted teeth was due to healing disorders. The long-term losses were due to caries and replacement resorption. Caries in tooth transplants has to be treated very early, because deep caries or deep drilling leads to an infection of the nutrient canals of the osteodentine. If the pulp chamber of a transplant is once obliterated by osteodentine, endodonti
