Age-induced changes in the teeth and their attachment apparatus.

Both the hard substances and the soft tissues of the teeth and their attachment apparatus are subject to constant change. This begins immediately after eruption and continues throughout life. An exact dividing line between changes which are physiological and pathological cannot always be drawn. Enamel undergoes attrition, and in addition its mechanical characteristics alter, owing probably to changes in diffusion conditions. The age-induced changes occurring in dentine are much more obvious, the biological properties of this hard substance being fundamentally altered. The dentine of older peop

Modification of food and beverages to reduce the erosive potential.

In view of the increasing prevalence of dental erosion and erosive tooth wear, preventive approaches are increasingly becoming the focus of interest. A proven way to reduce the erosive potential of food and drinks is adding calcium. However, whole meals and the taste of calcium-enriched drinks have not been studied. This study aimed to create erosion-protective recipes for food and beverages. In part 1, erosive meals were modified with calcium-rich ingredients. In part 2, varying amounts of CaCl₂ were added to acidic drinks. A sensory panel assessed flavour. Caries-free human teeth served as e

Archaic humans in the Middle Palaeolithic Levant conducted planned and selective intercepts of aurochs, but not mass hunting.

While archaeologically challenging, determining whether hominins practised mass hunting before ca. 50,000 years ago is crucial for demonstrating intergroup communication and cooperation. The premise is that killing and processing several herd animals in a single event implicates planning, food sharing, and aggregation at a scale greater than most other Palaeolithic activities. Here, we focus on Unit III in the deep Middle Palaeolithic deposits of the Nesher Ramla karst depression (~ 120,000 years ago) in Israel, an early contact area of archaic and modern humans. Numerous aurochs (Bos primigen

Mandibular Lateral Displacement in Growing Patients: Etiopathogenesis, Prophylaxis, and Early Treatment-A Literature Review.

Background: Mandibular lateral displacement is a common functional occlusal disorder that may occur independently or in conjunction with other types of malocclusion. Substantial evidence indicates that in growing patients, mandibular lateral displacement can have a significant negative impact on the development of both the morphology and function of the stomatognathic system. Early diagnosis and intervention are therefore crucial to preventing a range of developmental abnormalities, including skeletal and soft tissue asymmetries, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and pathological tooth wear

Interdisciplinary management of an adult orthodontic patient: a case report and literature review.

The purposes of this case report are to describe the course of treatment for a 29-year-old woman with a chief complaint of spaces in her dentition and to review relevant clinical topics in the literature. The primary etiology of the spacing in this case was a congenitally missing maxillary right lateral incisor and a peg-shaped maxillary left lateral incisor. The clinical diagnosis included skeletal and dental discrepancies in all 3 planes of space; a skeletal and dental open bite; a high and asymmetric smile line with a skeletal occlusal cant; a Class II dental occlusion; a Class III skeletal

The contribution of teledentistry in detecting tooth erosion in patients with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to demonstrate that including a teledentistry consultation in the standard care provided to patients in an eating disorder day hospital could be beneficial, notably for screening for particular pathologies and preventing dental erosion. METHODS: We included 50 patients from the eating disorders unit of the University Hospital of Montpellier, all of whom underwent a dental examination using asynchronous telemedicine. We recorded the data using teledentistry software for the medical file and an intraoral camera for the clinical videos. Remote diagnosis was p

Case report: Blue chromogenic dental staining in child with West syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Tooth discolouration can be caused by a variety of local and systemic factors. Extrinsic dental stains may be caused by predisposing factors, and other factors such as dental plaque, foods and beverages, chromogenic bacteria, metallic compounds and medications. Studies have reported a correlation between the colour of extrinsic staining and caries risk. CASE REPORT: A 4-year-old boy with West syndrome, characterised by epileptic seizures and severe muscle spasm, was referred to the paediatric dentistry clinic at School of Clinical Dentistry, Sheffield. He had a percutaneous endosc

[Parkinson's disease, temporomandibular disorders and bruxism: A pilot study].

Even though bruxism and Parkinson's disease have much in common, a possible relationship between them has not been established. The aim of this study was to gain more insight into a possible relationship between bruxism and temporomandibular disorders on the one hand and Parkinson's disease on the other. For this study, 708 people (368 with Parkinson's disease or parkinsonism and 340 controls) fully completed a questionnaire. The questionnaire included a selective Dutch translation of the questions from the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD), complemented with a question about tooth wear. Th

Megafaunal extinctions and the disappearance of a specialized wolf ecomorph.

The gray wolf (Canis lupus) is one of the few large predators to survive the Late Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions [1]. Nevertheless, wolves disappeared from northern North America in the Late Pleistocene, suggesting they were affected by factors that eliminated other species. Using skeletal material collected from Pleistocene permafrost deposits of eastern Beringia, we present a comprehensive analysis of an extinct vertebrate by exploring genetic (mtDNA), morphologic, and isotopic (delta(13)C, delta(15)N) data to reveal the evolutionary relationships, as well as diet and feeding behavior, o

Comparative effects of fluoride-containing and remineralization-promoting agents on artificial gastric juice-induced bovine enamel erosion susceptibility: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a major risk factor for erosive tooth wear because repeated exposure of enamel to gastric acid promotes demineralization. This in vitro study evaluated the protective effects of fluoride-containing and remineralization-promoting agents on enamel erosion induced by simulated gastric acid challenge. METHODS: Eighty-four bovine enamel specimens were randomly assigned to seven groups (n = 12/group): a sound enamel control group, an erosion control group treated with distilled water, and five treatment groups receiving Natural-F gel (2.09% NaF,
