We hypothesize that a swine laryngeal burn model can allow for laryngeal burn evaluation over time. Hunter syndrome is one of the mucopolysaccharidoses, characterized by a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme iduronate sulfatase. Retropharyngeal abscesses in the pediatric population can cause severe respiratory distress. We report a rare case of significant airway obstruction in a 14-month-old patient requiring rapid, emergent tracheotomy after attempts at endotracheal intubation by an experienced airway surgeon were unsuccessful. The patient was diagnosed with streptococcal pharyngitis 9 days prior to presentation to our facility and was being treated with amoxicillin. Prompt diagnosis, communication, and appropriate multidisciplinary airway management can lead to successful outcomes even in these severe cases.

The tracheo-innominate artery fistula is a rare but life-threatening complication of the tracheotomy. Its care management requires a rapid airway control to allow haemostasis by compression and ventilation. The haemostasis must be immediate and two techniques exist: surgery opencast (sternotomy) or interventional radiology. The choice between the two depends largely on the technical platform available. Our case report describes a tracheo-innomninate artery fistula surgically managed with success. The patient carried an anatomic variant, the two carotids come from innominate artery.

Subglottic stenosis (SGS) is a rare condition. The aetiology of SGS can be congenital, iatrogenic, idiopathic or caused by infectious and vascular diseases. In this case report, a 49-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital due to acute respiratory insufficiency. During intubation attempt SGS was found, and acute tracheotomy was performed. Biopsies from SGS and serology did not support an underlying vascular disease and the patient was diagnosed with an idiopathic SGS. SGS is a rare cause of acute respiratory insufficiency but is important to consider as a differential diagnosis.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked muscular dystrophy in relation with dystrophin deficient. Heart and respiratory function are classically involved and affect long-term prognosis. Significant atrio-ventricular block may occur in some patients. Implantation of traditional pacemaker may be challenging in patients with tracheotomy and on permanent home mechanical ventilation. We report the first case of a successful leadless intra-cardiac trans-catheter pacing system implantation in an adult DMD on wheelchair and on permanent home mechanical ventilation.

Ultrasound evaluation of diaphragm function allows the detection of diaphragm dysfunction and the adaptation of ventilatory support in patients admitted to intensive care units. Tracheobronchial foreign body aspiration occurs rarely in adults and may go unrecognized for a long time, but early detection and immediate retrieval of the foreign body are essential to prevent major morbidity. We describe the case of an adult who unusually aspirated part of his dental prosthesis during an attempted strangulation, which was unacknowledged until 6 months later when he was hospitalized with acute respiratory failure and required an emergency surgical tracheotomy.
