Particulate air pollution, ambulatory heart rate variability, and cardiac arrhythmia in retirement community residents with coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Decreased heart rate variability (HRV) has been associated with future cardiac morbidity and mortality and is often used as a marker of altered cardiac autonomic balance in studies of health effects of airborne particulate matter. Fewer studies have evaluated associations between air pollutants and cardiac arrhythmia. OBJECTIVES: We examined relationships between cardiac arrhythmias, HRV, and exposures to airborne particulate matter. METHODS: We measured HRV and arrhythmia with ambulatory electrocardiograms in a cohort panel study for up to 235 hr per participant among 50 nonsmok

Spatial Variation and Land Use Regression Modeling of the Oxidative Potential of Fine Particles.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative potential (OP) has been suggested to be a more health-relevant metric than particulate matter (PM) mass. Land use regression (LUR) models can estimate long-term exposure to air pollution in epidemiological studies, but few have been developed for OP. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to characterize the spatial contrasts of two OP methods and to develop and evaluate LUR models to assess long-term exposure to the OP of PM2.5. METHODS: Three 2-week PM2.5 samples were collected at 10 regional background, 12 urban background, and 18 street sites spread over the Netherlands/Belgium in 1

The gender difference in the effects of air pollution on the risk of spinal osteoarthritis in Chinese middle-aged and older adults: a prospective cohort study in China.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether exposure to multiple ambient air pollutants (PM1, PM2.5, PM10, O₃, and NO₂) elevates the risk of spinal osteoarthritis among middle-aged and older adults in China, and to further determine if there are gender-specific differences in vulnerability. METHODS: A total of 7,663 participants aged 45 years and older, drawn from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), were followed from 2011 to 2020. Individuals free of spinal osteoarthritis at baseline were included. Annual mean concentrations of PM1, PM2.5, PM10, O₃, and NO₂ we

Joint Mixture Associations of Prenatal Air Pollution and Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Intake on Birth Weight Outcomes in an African American Cohort.

Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) play a critical role in healthy pregnancy by supporting fetal development and modulating inflammation. Few studies have considered how dietary PUFAs and environmental exposures may jointly influence birth outcomes. We therefore investigated the joint mixture associations of prenatal exposure to traffic-related air pollutants (TRAPs), including carbon monoxide, fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen oxides, and dietary PUFA intake, on birth weight for gestational age z-score (BWZ) in 297 pregnant African Americans enrolled in the Atlanta Maternal-C

What is the spatiotemporal pattern of benzene concentration spread over susceptible area surrounding the Hartman Park community, Houston, Texas?

The Hartman Park community in Houston, Texas-USA, is in a highly polluted area which poses significant risks to its predominantly Hispanic and lower-income residents. Surrounded by dense clustering of industrial facilities compounds health and safety hazards, exacerbating environmental and social inequalities. Such conditions emphasize the urgent need for environmental measures that focus on investigating ambient air quality. This study estimated benzene, one of the most reported pollutants in Hartman Park, using machine learning-based approaches. Benzene data was collected in residential area

Spatial-temporal distribution and pedestrian exposure assessment of size-fractionated particles on crosswalk of urban intersection.

Vehicles tend to produce more pollutants especially particles at an urban intersection than other segments. Meanwhile, pedestrians at an intersection are inevitably exposed to high particle level and suffered from the health problem. Especially, some particles can deposit in different thoracic areas of the respiratory system and cause serious health problems. Hence, in this paper, the particles from 0.3 to 10 μm in 16 channels were measured to compare the spatio-temporal characteristics of them on the crosswalk and the roadside. Based on the roadside of fixed measurements, submicron particles

Analysis of the air pollution climate at a background site in the Po valley.

The Po valley in northern Italy is renowned for its high air pollutant concentrations. Measurements of air pollutants from a background site in Modena, a town of 200 thousand inhabitants within the Po valley, are analysed. These comprise hourly data for CO, NO, NO(2), NO(x), and O(3), and daily gravimetric equivalent data for PM(10) from 1998-2010. The data are analysed in terms of long-term trends, annual, weekly and diurnal cycles, and auto-correlation and cross-correlation functions. CO, NO and NO(2) exhibit a strongly traffic-related pattern, with daily peaks at morning and evening rush ho

Effects of diesel exhaust inhalation on cognitive performance in human volunteers: A randomized controlled crossover study.

BACKGROUND: Mounting evidence links exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) to impairment in cognitive functioning. OBJECTIVES: To determine if short-term, controlled exposure to diesel exhaust (DE) adversely affects one or more cognitive function domains. METHODS: We carried out a double-blinded crossover design with 28 healthy, adult volunteers. Volunteers were exposed to two conditions for 120 min each, on separate order-randomized occasions: filtered air (FA) and DE (300 µg/m3 PM2.5) at the Air Pollution Exposure Laboratory (APEL) at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). Personal exposure to PM2.5 in five commuting modes under hazy and non-hazy conditions.

Effective reducing exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) during commuting can help lower the risk of adverse health effects therefrom; however, few studies have examined the influence of different background levels of air pollution-particularly in China where PM2.5 concentrations are high globally. In this study, personal sampling was conducted to measure individual exposure during five different modes of commuting (bus, metro, car, bicycle and walking) in Shanghai, China. A total of 125 measurements were conducted for five days under haze and non-haze conditions, following which the cor

Prevalence and risk factors for asthma in Poland: results from the PMSEAD study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of asthma depends on both hereditary and environmental factors. Knowledge of the effects of environmental and congenital factors on the frequency of occurrence of asthma may provide important clues to its pathogenesis and prevention. OBJECTIVES: The Polish Multicentre Study of Epidemiology of Allergic Diseases was designed to obtain estimates representative of the entire Polish population to assess asthma prevalence and risk factors. METHODS: Thirty-three areas were selected in 11 regions of Poland. Epidemiologic diagnoses of asthma were verified by a single recogn

Mutagenic activity as a parameter to assess ambient air quality for protection of the environment and human health.

Atmospheric pollution has significant effects on maintaining the integrity of ecosystems and on the population's quality of life. Epidemiological studies have clearly associated related health problems, especially respiratory diseases, with exposure to air pollution. Organic compounds adsorbed to the airborne particulate matter are mutagenic in the Salmonella/microsome assay, and a considerable number of them are known to be carcinogenic to rodents. Studies performed at four sites within the urban area of Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, identified higher mutagenic acti

The role of genetic polymorphisms for inducing genotoxicity in workers occupationally exposed to benzene: a systematic review.

Benzene is used worldwide as a major raw material in a number of industrial processes and also a potent airborne pollutant emitted from traffic exhaust fume. The present systematic review aimed to identify potential associations between genetic polymorphisms and occupational benzene-induced genotoxicity. For this purpose, a total of 22 selected studies were carefully analysed. Our results revealed a positive relation between gene polymorphism and genotoxicity in individuals exposed to benzene, since 17 studies (out of 22) observed positive relations between genotoxicity and polymorphisms in xe

The Modern Environment and Childhood Asthma: The Role of Air Pollution and Heavy Metal Exposure.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Childhood asthma is the most common chronic non-communicable disease in children and a major global public health challenge. Although genetic predisposition contributes to asthma susceptibility, the high burden of disease-particularly in high-sociodemographic-index regions-points to a central role of environmental exposures characteristic of the modern environment. This review synthesizes current evidence linking ambient air pollution and heavy metal exposure to childhood asthma, with a focus on early-life vulnerability, underlying biological mechanisms, and implications for

[The cardiovascular exposome: areas of action for prevention and practical cardiology].

Environmental risk factors are recognized as essential determinants of the cardiovascular disease burden but are still poorly represented in clinical guidelines. External environmental exposures such as air pollution, traffic noise, heat, light pollution, chemical contamination of soil and water as well as urban planning, our social environment and lifestyle contribute significantly to the global disease burden and premature deaths. In particular, cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are significantly influenced by these environmental stressors. The exposome concept provides an overarching f

Health impact modelling of different travel patterns on physical activity, air pollution and road injuries for São Paulo, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: São Paulo city, Brazil, faces challenges caused by rapid urbanization. We illustrate how future travel patterns could lead to different health consequences in the city. METHODS: We evaluated the health impacts of different travel pattern scenarios for the São Paulo adult population by comparing the travel patterns of São Paulo in 2012 with counterfactual scenarios in which the city adopted travel patterns of i) those living in the city's expanded centre; ii) London (2012); iii) a highly motorized São Paulo (SP California); and iv) a visionary São Paulo (SP 2040), with high levels

Highway proximity and black carbon from cookstoves as a risk factor for higher blood pressure in rural China.

Air pollution in China and other parts of Asia poses large health risks and is an important contributor to global climate change. Almost half of Chinese homes use biomass and coal fuels for cooking and heating. China's economic growth and infrastructure development has led to increased emissions from coal-fired power plants and an expanding fleet of motor vehicles. Black carbon (BC) from incomplete biomass and fossil fuel combustion is the most strongly light-absorbing component of particulate matter (PM) air pollution and the second most important climate-forcing human emission. PM compositio

Long-term residential exposure to air pollution and lung cancer risk.

BACKGROUND: There is accumulating evidence that air pollution causes lung cancer. Still, questions remain about exposure misclassification, the components of air pollution responsible, and the histological subtypes of lung cancer that might be produced. METHODS: We investigated lung cancer incidence in relation to long-term exposure to three ambient air pollutants and proximity to major roads, using a Canadian population-based case-control study. We compared 2,390 incident, histologically confirmed lung cancer cases with 3,507 population controls in eight Canadian provinces from 1994 to 1997.

First insights into the new particle formation mechanism in Istanbul.

Atmospheric new particle formation (NPF) is a major source of ultrafine particles (UFPs) in urban environments. However, the characteristics and controlling mechanisms of NPF remain poorly understood in megacities influenced by complex emission mixtures and meteorological conditions. This study presents the first multi-site observational evidence of NPF in Istanbul, Turkiye, based on particle number size distribution (PNSD) measurements from 10 to 400 nm conducted over approximately 20 days in each season within a single year across three locations representing distinct urban characteristics;
