Tentonin 3/TMEM150C senses blood pressure changes in the aortic arch.

The baroreceptor reflex is a powerful neural feedback that regulates arterial pressure (AP). Mechanosensitive channels transduce pulsatile AP to electrical signals in baroreceptors. Here we show that tentonin 3 (TTN3/TMEM150C), a cation channel activated by mechanical strokes, is essential for detecting AP changes in the aortic arch. TTN3 was expressed in nerve terminals in the aortic arch and nodose ganglion (NG) neurons. Genetic ablation of Ttn3 induced ambient hypertension, tachycardia, AP fluctuations, and impaired baroreflex sensitivity. Chemogenetic silencing or activation of Ttn3+ neuro

Reflex vocal fold adduction in the porcine model: the effects of stimuli delivered to various sensory nerves.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify a panel of sensory nerves capable of eliciting an evoked glottic closure reflex (GCR) and to quantify the glottic closing force (GCF) of these responses in a porcine model. METHODS: In 5 pigs, the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (iSLN) and the trigeminal, pharyngeal plexus, glossopharyngeal, radial, and intercostal nerves were surgically isolated and electrically stimulated. During stimulation of each nerve, the GCR was detected by laryngeal electromyography and the GCF was measured with a pressure transducer. RESULTS: The onl

High-resolution real-time ultrasonography in the diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis.

The contribution of high-resolution real-time ultrasonography to the diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) was evaluated in a prospective study performed on 96 patients. 45 patients were also examined with contrast venography and 79 with continuous wave Doppler ultrasound. The femoral and popliteal veins were examined for compressibility by pressure with the transducer probe, response to deep inspiration and Valsalva's manoeuvre and presence of an intraluminal mass. The contralateral veins were routinely screened for comparison. The diagnostic sensitivity versus phlebography was 87%, and the

Mechanism of the burst fracture in the thoracolumbar spine. The effect of loading rate.

STUDY DESIGN: Calf lumbar spine motion segments were randomly assigned to two groups. After insertion of a transducer capable of measuring transient occlusion of the spinal canal during impact, a low rate axial impact was applied in one group and a high rate load in the other. Post-injury computed tomography scans and peak canal occlusions were measured to determine the effect of rate of load application on occlusion of the spinal canal. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to determine if for the same direction of impact and total energy delivered, occlusion of the spinal canal postvertebral

Effect of Extracorporeal Shock Wave on IGF-1, TNF-α, and IL-1in Joint Fluid of Patients with Temporomandibular Joint Disorder Syndrome.

As a new therapeutic method, extracorporeal shock wave (ESW) has shown remarkable efficacy in the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorder syndrome. Numerous studies have shown that it has the advantages of noninvasiveness, short treatment time, etc. It can effectively relieve pain and improve symptoms such as joint mobility and opening degree. In clinical practice, through accurate diagnosis and positioning of different patients, appropriate treatment parameters such as therapeutic transducer, frequency and pressure can be selected to significantly improve the efficacy. At the same time,

Diabetic Kidney Care Redefined with a New Way into Remission.

Diabetic kidney disease has been a leading cause for end-stage kidney disease. Traditional methods to slow progression include tight glycemic control, blood pressure control, and use of renin-angiotensin axis inhibitors. Finerenone and sodium glucose co-transporters have shown proven benefit in diabetic kidney disease regression recently. Other potential targets for slowing the decline in diabetic kidney disease are transforming growth factor beta, endothelin antagonist, protein kinase C inhibitors, advanced glycation end product inhibition, Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of tran

The extracellular matrix in myocardial injury, repair, and remodeling.

The cardiac extracellular matrix (ECM) not only provides mechanical support, but also transduces essential molecular signals in health and disease. Following myocardial infarction, dynamic ECM changes drive inflammation and repair. Early generation of bioactive matrix fragments activates proinflammatory signaling. The formation of a highly plastic provisional matrix facilitates leukocyte infiltration and activates infarct myofibroblasts. Deposition of matricellular proteins modulates growth factor signaling and contributes to the spatial and temporal regulation of the reparative response. Mech

The effects of mechanical forces on fetal lung growth.

Abnormalities of fetal lung growth, especially pulmonary hypoplasia, are important causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. For most clinical conditions associated with abnormal lung growth, studies in experimental animals indicate that these conditions affect the mechanical forces acting on the fetal lung. The major stimulus to growth in the fetal lung is stretch, which is due either to (1) to the constant distending pressure during periods when fetal breathing movements are absent, or (2) the intermittent, repetitive stretch induced by changes in thoracic shape during fetal breathing move

Episodic bradycardia in preterm infants.

To analyse factors likely to precipitate bradycardia, 27 preterm infants born at 32 weeks' gestation or less were studied on 89 occasions. Polygraphic recordings of electrocardiography, oxygen saturation, and respiratory effort were made. Subsequently, upper airway flow was measured by a mask and pressure transducer. In 605 episodes detected during initial recordings, time of onset of bradycardia correlated positively with apnoea duration, with bradycardia often occurring as respiratory effort resumed. Airway closure occurred in 88% of apnoeas associated with bradycardia during flow measuremen

Anorectal manometry for the exclusion of Hirschsprung's disease in neonates.

We studied the usefulness of anorectal manometry in excluding Hirschsprung's disease in 25 neonates with signs and symptoms of intestinal obstruction. An intraluminal pressure transducer or perfused side-opening catheters were used to evaluate anal tone, anal rhythmicity, and internal sphincter relaxation during rectal distention. Hirschsprung's disease was diagnosed by rectal biopsy in 16% of the neonates. Studies using anorectal manometry gave one false positive and one false negative diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease, which resulted in 75% sensitivity, 95% specificity, and a kappa coeffic

Managing water dynamics for optimal outcomes in unilateral biportal endoscopic surgery: preliminary results in a new operative channel.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, unilateral biportal endoscopic (UBE) surgery has become one of the most popular minimally invasive spine surgeries. Unlike traditional open surgery, UBE surgery is performed in isotonic saline solution. Therefore, comprehending the water dynamics involved in UBE surgery is crucial. METHODS: This prospective study involved 29 patients with single-level lumbar instability or degenerative disk disease who underwent UBE surgery between April 2021 and March 2022. Water flow pressure was measured using a disposable pressure transducer. Multifidus muscle MRI images were

Measurement of the Hepatic Venous Pressure Gradient and Transjugular Liver Biopsy.

Here we provide a detailed protocol describing the clinical procedure of hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) measurement in patients with advanced chronic liver disease followed by an instruction for transjugular biopsy. Under local anesthesia and ultrasound guidance, a catheter introducer sheath is placed in the right internal jugular vein. Using fluoroscopic guidance, a balloon catheter is advanced into the inferior vena cava (IVC) and inserted into a large hepatic vein. Correct and sufficient wedge position of the catheter is ensured by injecting contrast media while the balloon is bloc

Response characteristics for thermal and pressure devices commonly used for monitoring nasal and oral airflow during sleep studies.

We examined thermocouple and pressure cannulae responses to oral and nasal airflow using a polyester model of a human face, with patent nasal and oral orifices instrumented with a dual thermocouple (F-ONT2A, Grass) or a dual cannula (0588, Braebon) pressure transducer (± 10 cm H2O, Celesco) system. Tidal airflow was generated using a dual compartment facemask with pneumotachographs (Fleisch 2) connected to the model orifices. During nasal breathing: thermocouple amplitude = 0.38 Ln [pneumotachograph amplitude] + 1.31 and pressure cannula amplitude = 0.93 [pneumotachograph amplitude](2.15); dur

Development of an inlet pressure sensor for control in a left ventricular assist device.

A Tesla type continuous flow left ventricular assist device (VAD) has been designed by Penn State and Advanced Bionics, Inc. (ABI). When a continuous flow device is used, care must be taken to limit low pressures in the ventricle, which can produce an obstruction to the inlet cannula or trigger arrhythmias. Design of an inexpensive, semiconductor strain gauge inlet pressure sensor to detect suction has been completed. The research and design analysis included finite element modeling of the sensing region. Sensitivity, step-response, temperature dependence, and hysteresis tests have been perfor

[Ultrasonographic and urodynamic evaluation in stress incontinence].

Transvaginal sonography can show partial urinary penetration in the urethra in patients with no clinical incontinence. The Fluid Bridge Test-Pressure urodynamically demonstrates the same phenomenon. We compared these two technics in women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI). 49 patients underwent urodynamic testing and transvaginal sonography; 18 had SUI, 20 were asymptomatic postoperatively (Burch procedure) and 11 were normal controls. Urodynamics consisted of filling cystometry with saline (infusion speed: ml 70/min) using transurethral Foley catheter (n degree 14 Fr), and a profilometri
