Dactylogyrus pharyngocephalus is a dactylogyrid monogenean parasite originally described by Kulkarni, 1970 from tank goby Glossogobius giuris (Hamilton, 1822) in South India. The species has not been recorded since then. Fresh specimens of D. pharyngocephalus were collected from northeast India and examined morpho-molecularly. Temporary (glycerine mounted) and permanent (stained with Gomori's trichrome and DPX mounted) slides were made and photographed. Primer set C1 and D2 was employed to amplify a fragment of the 28S rRNA gene. The resulting nucleotide sequences, when examined by the BLAST t

Given their sheer cumulative biomass and ubiquitous presence, parasites are increasingly recognized as essential components of most food webs. Beyond their influence as consumers of host tissue, many parasites also have free-living infectious stages that may be ingested by non-host organisms, with implications for energy and nutrient transfer, as well as for pathogen transmission and infectious disease dynamics. This has been particularly well-documented for the cercaria free-living stage of digenean trematode parasites within the Phylum Platyhelminthes. Here, we aim to synthesize the current

Species of the family Reniferidae are trematodes found in the oral cavity and esophagus of snakes from Nearctic and Neotropical regions. Although Renifer heterocoelium has been reported in different snake species from South America, the snails involved in its transmission remain unknown. In this study, a xiphidiocercaria emerged from the physid snail Stenophysa marmorata from Brazil and was subjected to morphological and molecular study. The general morphology, including the shape of the stylet and arrangement of penetration glands, resembles that described for reniferid trematodes from North

We herein morphologically diagnose the 5 natural groups of fish blood flukes and name them. Species of Chimaerohemecidae Yamaguti, 1971 infect chimeras, sharks, and rays (Chondrichthyes) and have C-shaped lateral tegumental spines and a non-sinusoidal testis or lack spines and have a sinusoidal testis. Species of Acipensericolidae n. fam. infect sturgeons and paddlefish (Acipenseriformes) and have a robust, bowl-shaped, pedunculate anterior sucker, lateral tegumental spines that are spike-like (not C shaped), an inverse U-shaped intestine (anterior ceca absent) with posterior ceca terminating

Fascioloides magna, although of North American origin, is well established in central Europe. Here it is expanding its geographic range and has been exposed to new potential final hosts including native and naturalized species. Based on their contribution to the propagation and transmission of F. magna, its final hosts have been grouped into three types including 'dead-end hosts' that comprise species in which flukes reach the liver but rarely mature and produce few eggs which are not excreted. Sika deer (Cervus nippon) were classified as dead-end hosts, this being quoted in the literature wit

PURPOSE: The diversity of larval digenetic trematodes can provide information on one or more intermediate hosts prior to maturation into the definitive host; on host activity and distribution; and in some cases, on environmental perturbations. In this context, the goal of the present study was to analyse the trematode larvae found in adult amphibians collected from the Argentinian Chaco Region. Few studies have been reported on the systematics of larval digeneans in amphibians.
METHODS: A total of 167 specimens of frogs (Leptodactylus macrosternum, Leptodactylus latinasus, Lepidobatrachus lae

The adult stage of Explanatum explanatum has economic importance in the production of ruminants, especially water buffaloes. This species has been widely reported in the Indian sub-continent. Recently, molecular analyses to reveal the dispersal route of this species were performed in Bangladesh, Nepal, and India. In the present study, we focused on E. explanatum distributed in Sri Lanka. A total of 52 flukes were collected from water buffaloes in Sri Lanka and identified as E. explanatum based on the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA. Analysis of the mitochon

Parasitic castration is a phenomenon where the parasite blocks or reduces the host reproductive output. This study explored the impact of Tetracotyle wayanadensis infection on the reproductive performance of the freshwater fish Aplocheilus lineatus. Heavily infected A. lineatus showed slow and sluggish movements with reduced food intake and feeding activities. Histopathological observations of the ovary revealed severe necrosis and degeneration of previtellogenic and vitellogenic oocytes and follicular atresia. The oogonial nests were absent; chromatin nucleolar oocytes irregularly shaped and

We describe Morishitium polonicum malayense n. subsp. from Asian glossy starlings (Aplonis panayensis strigata) (Horsfield, 1821) (Passeriformis: Sturnidae) caught in Malaysia. The trematodes had parasitized the air sacs and the thoracic and body cavities of 40 out of 67 (59.7%) birds examined. The specimens each had an oral sucker, a postpharyngeal genital pore, and tandem testes, but lacked a ventral sucker. The morphological characteristics of our specimens were similar to those of M. polonicum polonicum (Machalska, 1980) from Poland. However, the anterior extremity of vitelline follicles o

Monogenean Gyrodactylus cichlidarum can cause severe mortality of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fry. To date, reports about mucosal immunity of O. niloticus against this parasite have been rare. In order to explore the mucosal immunity of Nile tilapia against G. cichlidarum infection, the expressions of six adaptive immune-related genes and the contents of specific immunoglobulin IgM and IgT in the skin-associated lymphoid tissues (SALT) were dynamically analyzed after primary and secondary infections. The abundances of G. cichlidarum on the hosts after secondary infection were lower th

OBJECTIVES: Diagnosis of Platynosomum fastosum Kossack 1910, a liver fluke of cats, can be challenging, with infections potentially not identified depending on the fecal analysis method used. The aim of this study was to compare three methods for identification of P fastosum eggs in feces.
METHODS: Feces from 50 cats with unknown infection status from a location endemic for P fastosum were analyzed. The methods used included double centrifugation with Sheather's sugar flotation solution (specific gravity 1.28); the Mini-Parasep (Apacor) flotation kit with ZnSO4 (specific gravity 1.20); and th

Trematodes belonging to the superfamily Diplostomoidea have complex life cycles involving birds, mammals and reptiles as definitive hosts, and gastropods and different groups of invertebrates and vertebrates as intermediate hosts. Molecular studies of these parasites are numerous, but data from larval stages in molluscs remain scarce, particularly in South America. The present study focused mainly on five morphotypes of longifurcate cercariae found in Biomphalaria straminea (Dunker, 1848) from Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, collected between 2009 and 2017. In each morphotype, nuclear in

The notifiable freshwater pathogen Gyrodactylus salaris Malmberg, 1957 tends to be a generalist in contrast to other monogeneans. Whilst it causes most damage to its primary host, the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar Linnaeus), transport and reservoir hosts likely play a key role in maintaining the parasite in the environment. Here, we tested the ability of G. salaris (strain River Lierelva, southern Norway) to infect and reproduce on a population of wild caught alpine bullhead (Cottus poecilopus Heckel). Exposure of alpine bullhead yearlings (0+) to G. salaris for 24 h at low (6.5 °C) or high tem

Thirty-seven adult female moose ( Alces alces) from 2 distinct but adjacent populations in Elk Island National Park (EINP), Alberta, Canada (19 in north EINP and 18 in south EINP), were fitted with mortality-sensing VHF radio-collars, and radio signals were acquired daily to ascertain mortality status. At capture, serum, whole blood, and feces were collected; pregnancy was determined; teeth were aged by visual inspection; and a portion of liver was assessed by ultrasound examination. Postmortem examination was conducted on 20 suitable carcasses. Clinical pathological abnormalities, including e

Turtle blood flukes belonging to the family Spirorchiidae (Digenea) represent a major threat for sea turtle health and are considered the most important parasitic cause of turtle stranding and mortality worldwide. Despite the large diversity of spirorchiid species found globally, there are only 2 records for free-ranging Mediterranean sea turtles that date back to the late 1800s involving just Hapalotrema mistroides Monticelli, 1896. This study describes the first fatal confirmed case of spirorchiidiasis in a free-ranging Mediterranean loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta (Linnaeus) and, owing to

In a cultured pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) stock the monopisthocotylean monogenean gill parasite Ancyrocephalus paradoxus caused heavy infection and mortalities. The gills of the affected fish specimens were infected by 50 to 800 monogenean parasites. Severe pathological changes were found in areas where the worms attached to the gills. At the attachment sites the haptoral discs of the worms formed a deep depression in the epithelium of the filaments, and the anchors pierced into and fixed themselves to the connective tissue of the cartilaginous gill rays. At these attachment sites red blood

UNLABELLED: Liver fluke Parafasciolopsis fasciolaemorpha is a parasite typical of elk (Alces alces). The present study describes the identification of a massive invasion of the liver fluke P. fasciolaemorpha in an elk in the Sobibór Landscape Park, Eastern Poland. In February 2016, samples of liver and faeces were collected from the elk during postmorte examination. A section of liver tissue and three grams of faeces were examined for the presence of flukes or fluke eggs by decantation. In total, 11,150 juvenile and mature flukes of P. fasciolaemorpha were found in the examined liver. Multiple
