PURPOSE: To evaluate the results of phacoemulsification with capsular bag fixation of a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), acrylic, or silicone intraocular lens (IOL) in patients with complicated cataract resulting from Fuchs' heterochromic uveitis (FHU).

Tuberculosis is endemic, with nearly 2 billion carriers worldwide. Aviation medical examiners should be alert to both its pulmonary and extrapulmonary manifestations, especially in the international traveler. Uveitis is a rare presentation of tuberculosis, but that diagnosis must be considered in the differential, even in the absence of pulmonary disease. Promptly treated, tuberculosis should not interfere with the resumption of a career in aviation, and does not generally require special follow up.

We report here the clinical features and outcomes of two patients who presented idiopathic tubulo-interstitial nephritis and uveitis syndrome (TINU syndrome) with ocular disease following the onset of nephropathy. The initial symptoms were renal impairment with asthenia, anorexia and weight loss. An increase in urinary beta2-microglobulin was noticed at the initial checkup in both patients. PURPOSE: To study the characteristics of uveitis occurring during intravenous cidofovir treatment for CMV retinitis in patients with AIDS.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied ten cases (16 eyes) of uveitis in patients with CMV retinitis treated with intravenous cidofovir. All the patients had ophthalmologic examinations and, if required, fundus angiographies. The median follow-up was eight months.

BACKGROUND: Uveitis associated with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is an important cause of visual impairment in children. Because uveitis is often asymptomatic in this age group, frequent ophthalmologic screening examinations are recommended. Efficacy of a new immunosuppressive agent, FK506, in refractory uveitis was studied in 8 patients: 5 with Behcet's disease and 3 with idiopathic retinal vasculitis. The agent was given by oral administration every 12 hours. Profound hypotony associated with loss of vision complicating bilateral chronic uveitis was managed in five consecutive patients with vitrectomy and silicone oil injection. The use of silicone oil facilitated anatomic reattachment in three of the five eyes, improved visual acuity in all five eyes, and increased or maintained the intraocular pressure (IOP) in four of the five eyes at the 6-month follow-up examination. Inflammatory eye disease is well recognized in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) but the relationship between the uveitis and the spondyloarthropathy is poorly defined. The following conclusions may be drawn from a study of 1331 consecutive patients with AS: the prevalence of uveitis was 40% (535 subjects), almost half of whom had greater than 5 attacks.
