Cereal grain is a global food staple. Filial tissues in grain, such as the embryo and endosperm, grow embedded in the maternal ovule and surrounding ovary wall. Maternal tissues provide nutrition and protection but are progressively reduced and degraded as filial tissues expand, driving grain expansion between floret hulls. While we know some enzymatic players, regulation of this process remains less understood. However, our previous work in barley, Hordeum vulgare spp. vulgare suggested a role for the phytohormone jasmonate (JA). We edited the barley ALLENE OXIDASE CYCLASE (HvAOC) gene encodi

Fruit and vegetable (F&V) consumption in Bulgaria is critically low-among the lowest in the European Union. This study applied the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) to identify key barriers and facilitators of F&V intake among 306 Bulgarian adults. A cross-sectional survey measured TDF-derived beliefs and self-reported F&V consumption. Multiple regression analysis revealed that beliefs about consequences and peer social influences were the strongest predictors of intake frequency. Participants who recognised the health benefits of F&V and perceived healthy eating as common among their friend

The latitudinal diversity gradient is one of the most general biogeographical patterns. However, current latitudinal diversity gradients have been mostly focused on aboveground vegetation, while such a pattern exists in soil seed bank, which is an irreplaceable natural resource that provides multifaceted benefits to terrestrial biodiversity, is not well understood. Here, we compiled plant diversity data of soil seed bank and corresponding aboveground vegetation from 496 sample sites in China, to detect whether the latitudinal diversity gradient of soil seed bank differs from that of abovegroun

BACKGROUND: Limited access to fruits and vegetables remains a significant barrier among underserved populations, particularly within Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Evidence from previous studies suggests that prescription programs, which provide incentives for fresh produce consumption, are effective in enhancing dietary quality and alleviating food insecurity.
OBJECTIVE: This pilot investigation assessed the impact of a tailored produce prescription intervention on changes in fruit and vegetable consumption among students at a Historically Black College and University …

As international efforts against global warming advance, blue carbon has gained attention as a CO₂ sink. This study quantitatively evaluated the carbon budget of an eelgrass (Zostera marina) ecosystem in Komuke Lagoon, a restricted coastal lagoon on the northeastern coast of Hokkaido, Japan. Based on outdoor experiments conducted in 2018 and 2023, a new DIC equation was constructed that incorporates photosynthetic responses to photon flux density and water temperature. Furthermore, a box model integrating river inflow, seawater exchange with the open ocean, air-water CO₂ flux, bottom dilution,

Understanding how habitat transformation and non-native species shape plant-pollinator interactions is important for conserving and restoring oceanic islands, where both disturbances are widespread yet rarely examined together. Here, we investigated pollination networks across six contrasting vegetation types spanning a temporal gradient of invasion by non-native flowering plants on a tropical island. We recorded 5263 visits involving 327 unique plant-pollinator interactions over a three-month sampling period. We found that vegetation type and plant invasion intensity jointly structure differe

The Chiari network is a rare embryological fenestrated web-like structure located in the right atrium, present in approximately 2-3% of the general population. Infective endocarditis of the Chiari network is exceedingly rare and poses significant diagnostic and management challenges. We present a case of a 67-year-old male with hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and chronic hepatitis C who presented with malaise and dyspnea. Workup revealed multifocal bilateral pulmonary opacities on computed tomography (CT) of the chest, and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) identi

Fungal keratitis remains a frequent cause of corneal morbidity in tropical regions, particularly after trivial trauma involving plant material. Dematiaceous fungi constitute a smaller subgroup of filamentous organisms but may present with characteristic pigmentation over the corneal lesion. A middle-aged woman with controlled diabetes who developed pain and visual blurring after minor ocular trauma came to the ophthalmology outpatient department. Slit-lamp examination showed a paracentral ulcer with feathery margins and a brownish plaque. Direct microscopy confirmed septate pigmented hyphae. F

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a growing threat to global health, and its spread through the food chain is gaining increasing attention. While AMR in food of animal origin has been extensively studied, less is known about its prevalence in plant-based foods, particularly fresh and ready-to-eat (RTE) vegetables. This study investigated the occurrence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in fresh and RTE vegetables. Isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing and molecular analyses for the characterization of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). A significant proportio…

Swarms of drones offer increased sensing aperture. When these swarms mimic natural behaviors, sampling is enhanced by adapting the aperture to local conditions. We demonstrate that this enables detection and tracking of heavily occluded targets. Object classification in conventional aerial images generalizes poorly due to occlusion randomness and is inefficient even under minimal occlusion. In contrast, anomaly detection applied to synthetic-aperture integral images remains robust in dense vegetation and independent of pre-trained classes. Our autonomous, centralized swarm searches for unknown

Fruits and vegetables offer substantial nutritional and health benefits, but their short shelf life necessitates effective preservation methods. Conventional drying techniques, while efficient, often lead to deterioration in food quality. Recent advancements highlight the potential of infrared blanching (IRB) as a preparatory process to improve drying outcomes. This review systematically evaluated the application of IRB for various fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, mangoes, apples, peaches, strawberries, grapes, and green beans. IRB demonstrated notable improvements…

BACKGROUND: Systemic infection of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) usually manifests as endocarditis, with vegetations involving the lead and cardiac valves. Cardiac implantable electronic device systemic infections involve the transvenous or epicardial portion of the lead in addition to adjacent endocardium. History, blood cultures, and imaging are the cornerstone of diagnosis. The treatment of CIED infections involves intravenous antibiotics, complete removal of the CIED, and reimplantation after clearance of bacteraemia. AngioVac is used for the removal of right atrial masses,

The generation of toxic aldehydes in vegetable oils subjected to high-temperature cooking processes, such as frying, poses significant health risks due to their high reactivity and potential to form carcinogenic and mutagenic compounds. This review discusses the mechanisms of aldehydes formation in vegetable oils, focusing on key factors such as oil composition, cooking temperature, and heating time. The major toxic aldehydes identified include acrolein, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, t,t-2,4-decadienal (t,t-2,4-DDE), 4-hydroxy-2-hexenal (4-HHE), and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), which have been asso

Background and aims: Sarcopenia is a progressive and degenerative loss of muscle mass and function in the elderly that is associated with increased adverse outcomes. Organosulfur compounds, obtained from Alliaceae vegetables, could protect skeletal muscle from atrophy because of their antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the association between Alliaceae vegetable consumption and sarcopenia in the general elderly population. Methods: This study used data from the TCLSIH cohort study (2017-2022). Alliaceae vegetable consumption was asses…

Unpleasant flavor is a commonly stated reason for avoiding vegetables. However, repeated exposure to flavors, even unpleasant vegetable flavors, improves acceptability. Yet, increasing exposure to vegetables is difficult, as vegetables can be less convenient, available, and affordable than other foods. This study describes a method to circumvent these barriers to repeated flavor exposure. We designed a game with vegetable- or control-flavored gummies, where players (N = 34) were challenged to identify the flavors over 2 weeks. One round was played per day, and the questions and gummies were de…

Hydrogels are indispensable for a variety of applications. Conventional biomaterial-based hydrogels, typically made from proteins or polysaccharides, often suffer from high costs, poor mechanical properties, and limited chemical functionality for modification. In this work, we present a novel hydrogel developed from modified castor oil, which is a renewable and cost-effective resource. Castor oil-based oligomer (CG) was synthesized using glycidyl methacrylate and triethylamine via ring-opening polymerization. The oligomer formed a gel only with Cu2+ ions among the various systematically studie

Growth rate is a key prokaryotic trait that allows for estimating fitness and understanding cell metabolism. While it has been well studied in model organisms, there is limited data on slow-growing bacteria. In particular, there is a lack of quantitative studies on Brucella species. This genus includes important microorganisms that are causative agents of brucellosis, one of the most widespread bacterial zoonoses, affecting several species of animals, including humans. Brucella species exhibit approximately 97% genomic similarity. Despite this, Brucella species show different host preferences,

A broadly accepted paradigm is that vegetation reduces coastal dune erosion. However, we show that during an extreme storm event, vegetation surprisingly accelerates erosion. In 104-m-long beach-dune profile experiments conducted within a flume, we discovered that while vegetation initially creates a physical barrier to wave energy, it also (i) decreases wave run-up, which creates discontinuities in erosion and accretion patterns across the dune slope, (ii) increases water penetration into the sediment bed, which induces its fluidization and destabilization, and (iii) reflects wave energy, acc
