Impaired semantic word learning in primary progressive aphasia.

The neuropsychological and linguistic impairments in individuals with primary progressive aphasia (PPA) have been largely studied. However, the integrity of word learning ability in different PPA variants remains unexplored, despite its prominent role in language therapy. In this study, we investigated the novel word learning ability of 20 individuals with PPA (non-fluent variant: nfvPPA n = 11; logopenic variant: lvPPA n = 9) - as compared to 23 neurotypical controls (NC). Specifically, we used a contextual word learning task that required participants to discover the meaning of 48 new words

Predictors of learning and memory in pediatric critical congenital heart disease: the important role of working memory.

Learning and memory are crucial neuropsychological skills, linked with the development of play, adaptive skills, and academic functioning. Children and adolescents with critical congenital heart disease (cCHD) are at risk for a range of neurodevelopmental difficulties. Here, we examine visual and verbal learning and memory skills in a school-age sample of children and adolescents with cCHD, and explore how medical, neuropsychological, and social variables predict school-age learning and memory. This is a retrospective observational study of 189 patients with cCHD (age 5-18 years) who attended …

Cognitive correlates of mathematical achievement in children with cerebral palsy and typically developing children.

BACKGROUND: Remarkably few studies have investigated the nature and origin of learning difficulties in children with cerebral palsy (CP). AIMS: To investigate math achievement in terms of word-problem solving ability in children with CP and controls. Because of the potential importance of reading for word-problem solving, we investigated reading as well. SAMPLE: Children with CP attending either special (n= 41) or mainstream schools (n= 16) and a control group of typically developing children in mainstream schools (n= 16). METHOD: Group differences in third grade math and reading, controlle

Asperger syndrome: tests of right hemisphere functioning and interhemispheric communication.

The primary aim of this investigation was to assess to what extent Rourke's (1989, 1995) nonverbal learning disabilities syndrome (NLD) model resembles the pattern of assets and deficits seen in people with Asperger syndrome (AS). NLD can be characterized by a cluster of deficits primarily affecting nonverbal aspects of functioning, in the presence of proficiency in single word reading and a superior verbal memory. The neurological underpinnings of this syndrome may be dysfunction of white matter affecting right hemisphere functioning and interhemispheric communication. To explore this hypothe…

Learning and generalization deficits in patients with memory impairments due to anterior communicating artery aneurysm rupture or hypoxic brain injury.

Human anterograde amnesia can result from a variety of etiologies, including hypoxic brain injury and anterior communicating artery (ACoA) aneurysm rupture. Although each etiology can cause a similarly severe disruption in declarative memory for verbal and visual material, there may be differences in incrementally acquired, feedback-based learning, as well as generalization. Here, 6 individuals who survived hypoxic brain injury, 7 individuals who survived ACoA aneurysm rupture, and 13 matched controls were tested on 2 tasks that included a feedback-based learning phase followed by a transfer p

Functional correlates of children's responsiveness to intervention.

Functional imaging research has yielded evidence of changes in poor readers after instructional intervention. Although it is well established that within the group of children with poor reading there are differences in behavioral response to intervention, little is know about the functional correlates of responsiveness. Therefore, we acquired functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from children identified as "at risk for reading disability" who responded differently to a reading intervention (5 responders; 5 nonresponders; 4 controls). Groups differed in activation level of the left

Predicting individual differences in reading comprehension: a twin study.

We examined the Simple View of reading from a behavioral genetic perspective. Two aspects of word decoding (phonological decoding and word recognition), two aspects of oral language skill (listening comprehension and vocabulary), and reading comprehension were assessed in a twin sample at age 9. Using latent factor models, we found that overlap among phonological decoding, word recognition, listening comprehension, vocabulary, and reading comprehension was primarily due to genetic influences. Shared environmental influences accounted for associations among word recognition, listening comprehen

Effects of tryptophan loading on verbal, spatial and affective working memory functions in healthy adults.

Serotonin (5-HT) appears to modulate affective behaviours by providing a homeostatic threshold around which other transmitters respond. This general principle of activity should hold for other types of behaviour, including cognition, but has not been extensively examined. We hypothesized, based on past findings, that increased 5-HT would constrain prefrontally guided working memory functions that are mediated by catecholamine neurotransmitters. Healthy adults ingested amino acid compounds designed to deplete and load systemic tryptophan levels in a repeated-measures crossover design. Outcome v

Evidence for a specific impairment of serial order short-term memory in dyslexic children.

In order to better understand the nature of verbal short-term memory (STM) deficits in dyslexic children, the present study used the distinction between item and serial order retention capacities in STM tasks. According to recent STM models, storage of verbal item information depends very directly upon the richness of underlying phonological and semantic representations. On the other hand, storage of serial order information appears to reflect a language-independent system. Hence, if there is a fundamental STM deficit in dyslexia that is not to be explained only by the poor phonological proces

Problems in the acquisition of imagery mnemonics: three brain-damaged cases.

The literature provides little direction on how to overcome difficulties which some brain-damaged patients have in acquiring imagery mnemonics as a memory aid during the period of anterograde amnesia. For those interested in the therepeutic usefulness of imagery mediation, we provide a detailed account of the acquisition of some mnemonic skill in three brain-damaged patients who initially failed in using visual imagery mediators to recall words lists.

Are automated video interviews smart enough? Behavioral modes, reliability, validity, and bias of machine learning cognitive ability assessments.

Automated video interviews (AVIs) that use machine learning (ML) algorithms to assess interviewees are increasingly popular. Extending prior AVI research focusing on noncognitive constructs, the present study critically evaluates the possibility of assessing cognitive ability with AVIs. By developing and examining AVI ML models trained to predict measures of three cognitive ability constructs (i.e., general mental ability, verbal ability, and intellect [as observed at zero acquaintance]), this research contributes to the literature in several ways. First, it advances our understanding of how c

Memory impairment in alcohol use disorder is associated with regional frontal brain volumes.

BACKGROUND: Episodic memory deficits occur in alcohol use disorder (AUD), but their anatomical substrates remain in question. Although persistent memory impairment is classically associated with limbic circuitry disruption, learning and retrieval of new information also relies on frontal systems. Despite AUD vulnerability of frontal lobe integrity, relations between frontal regions and memory processes have been under-appreciated. METHODS: Participants included 91 AUD (49 with a drug diagnosis history) and 36 controls. Verbal and visual episodic memory scores were age- and education-corrected

Long-Term Cognitive Impairment in Kleine-Levin Syndrome.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: In Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS), episodes of hypersomnia, cognitive, and behavioral disturbances alternate with asymptomatic periods. Because 50% of patients report decreased academic performances, we evaluated their cognitive status during asymptomatic periods, determinants of deficits, and changes during follow-up. METHODS: The cognitive assessment during asymptomatic periods in all consecutive patients with typical KLS and healthy controls included the non-verbal intelligence quotient (Raven Progressive Matrices), the Trail Making Test, the Stroop Color-Word Test, the Wech

Mapping the neural patterns of verbal repetition: an activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Verbal repetition involves transforming heard speech into articulatory motor output and constitutes a core language function integrating receptive and expressive processes within tight temporal constraints. This integrative nature underlies its importance for language acquisition and learning and accounts for its diagnostic relevance in acquired and developmental language disorders. Despite extensive investigation, the consistent neural architecture supporting verbal repetition has remained insufficiently established due to methodological heterogeneity across studies. Here, we conducted a coor

Resting Frontal Gamma Power is Associated with Both Expressive Language and Non-verbal Cognitive Abilities in Young Autistic Children.

Previous research links resting frontal gamma power to key developmental outcomes in young neurotypical (NT) children and infants at risk for language impairment. However, it remains unclear whether gamma power is specifically associated with language or with more general cognitive abilities among young children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The current study evaluates differences in resting frontal gamma power between young autistic and NT children and tests whether gamma power is uniquely associated with individual differences in expressive language, receptive language and n

Hippocampal volume and memory performance in children with perinatal stroke.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric neurologists and neonatologists often are asked to predict cognitive outcome after perinatal brain injury (including likely memory and learning outcomes). However, relatively few data exist on how accurate predictions can be made. Furthermore, although the consequences of brain injury on hippocampal volume and memory performance have been studied extensively in adults, little work has been done in children. METHODS: We measured the volume of the hippocampus in 27 children with perinatal stroke and 19 controls, and measured their performance on standardized verbal and non
