Vestibular Precision at the Level of Perception, Eye Movements, Posture, and Neurons.

Precision and accuracy are two fundamental properties of any system, including the nervous system. Reduced precision (i.e., imprecision) results from the presence of neural noise at each level of sensory, motor, and perceptual processing. This review has three objectives: (1) to show the importance of studying vestibular precision, and specifically that studying accuracy without studying precision ignores fundamental aspects of the vestibular system; (2) to synthesize key hypotheses about precision in vestibular perception, the vestibulo-ocular reflex, posture, and neurons; and (3) to show tha

A novel intracochlear injection method for rapid drug delivery to vestibular end organs.

BACKGROUND: Injection into the inner ear through the round window (RW) or a cochleostomy is a reliable method for delivering drugs or viruses to the cochlea. This method has been less effective for fast deliveries to vestibular end organs. NEW METHOD: We describe a novel approach for rapid delivery of drugs to the vestibular end organ via the oval window (OW) and scala vestibuli in 1-3 month old C57BL/6 mice. The OW was directly accessed through the external ear canal after ablating the tympanic membrane and middle ear ossicles. A canalostomy in the superior canal provided a low pressure poin

The neural basis of motion sickness.

Although motion of the head and body has been suspected or known as the provocative cause for the production of motion sickness for centuries, it is only within the last 20 yr that the source of the signal generating motion sickness and its neural basis has been firmly established. Here, we briefly review the source of the conflicts that cause the body to generate the autonomic signs and symptoms that constitute motion sickness and provide a summary of the experimental data that have led to an understanding of how motion sickness is generated and can be controlled. Activity and structures that

Optical trapping of otoliths drives vestibular behaviours in larval zebrafish.

The vestibular system, which detects gravity and motion, is crucial to survival, but the neural circuits processing vestibular information remain incompletely characterised. In part, this is because the movement needed to stimulate the vestibular system hampers traditional neuroscientific methods. Optical trapping uses focussed light to apply forces to targeted objects, typically ranging from nanometres to a few microns across. In principle, optical trapping of the otoliths (ear stones) could produce fictive vestibular stimuli in a stationary animal. Here we use optical trapping in vivo to man

Altered auditory and vestibular functioning in individuals with low bone mineral density: a systematic review.

Alteration in the process of bone remodelling is associated with falls and fractures due to increased bone fragility and altered calcium functioning. The auditory system consists of skeletal structures and is, therefore, prone to getting affected by altered bone remodelling. In addition, the vestibule consists of huge volumes of calcium (CaCO3) in the form of otoconia crystals and alteration in functioning calcium levels could, therefore, result in vestibular symptoms. Thus, the present study aimed at compiling information from various studies on assessment of auditory or vestibular systems in

Effect of noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation on center of pressure sway of static standing posture.

BACKGROUND: The vestibular system is involved in the control of standing balance. Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) is a noninvasive technique that can stimulate the vestibular system. In recent years, noisy GVS (nGVS) using noise current stimulation has been attempted, but it has not been clarified whether it affects postural sway in open-eye standing. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to clarify the influence of nGVS on the center of pressure (COP) sway measurement in open-eye standing postural control and identify the responders of nGVS. METHODS: nGVS (0.1-640 Hz) was delivered

[Research status of vestibular migraine].

Pathogenesis, clinical characteristics and treatments of vestibular migraine(VM) in recent years were retrospectively analyzed. The results showed that VM had diversified vestibular symptoms. VM may show a mild central and peripheral vestibular dysfunction during ictal and interictal period. Although no specificity, it could provide important references to identify VM. The pathogenesis of VM, which depended upon the clues of migraine, had been supposed to be probably related to genetic susceptibility, neurotransmitter changes induced by trigeminal nerve, and abnormal integration of central sig

Recent Advances in the Understanding of Vestibular Migraine.

Approximately 1% of the general population and 10% of patients with migraine suffer from vestibular migraine (VM). However, this condition remains relatively unknown; therefore, it is often underdiagnosed despite the recent adoption of international diagnostic criteria for VM. The diagnosis of VM is based on the symptoms, degree, frequency, and duration of the vestibular episodes, a history of migraine, the temporal association of migraine symptoms with vestibular episodes in at least 50% of cases, and the exclusion of other causes. Physical examination and laboratory findings are usually norm

Clinical characteristics of cervicogenic-related dizziness and vertigo.

Cervical vertigo has long been a controversial entity and its very existence as a medical entity has advocates and opponents. Supporters of cervical vertigo claim that its actual prevalence is underestimated due to the overestimation of other diagnostic categories in clinics. Furthermore, different pathophysiological mechanisms have been attributed to cervical vertigo. Here the authors discuss the clinical characteristics of rotational vertebral artery vertigo, postwhiplash vertigo, proprioceptive cervical vertigo, and cervicogenic vertigo of old age. A clinical entity named subclinical verteb

[Neuroendocrine factors in pathogenesis of motion sickness and the protective effect of drugs].

The paper presents a generalization of many-year complex investigations performed at various departments of the Institute of Medico-Biological Problems (Moscow) and various laboratories and institutes of the Ministry of Public Health and the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, devoted to the pathogenesis of motion disease (sea sickness, vestibulo vegetative syndrome, various forms of kinetosis). The main attention is given to interpretation of the mechanisms of therapeutic and prophylactic action of drugs used for the treatment of such disorders. In particular, the role of a hormonal componen

Neurophysiology of developing fish at altered gravity: background--facts--perspectives.

During the entire evolution of life on Earth, the phylogenetic as well as the individual development of all organisms took place under constant gravity conditions, against which they achieved specific countermeasures for compensation and adaptation. On the one side, gravity represents a factor of physical restriction, which compelled the ancestors of all extant living beings to develop basic achievements to counter the gravitational force (e.g., elements of statics like any kind of skeleton--from actin to bone--to overcome gravity enforced size limits or to keep form). On the other side, alrea

[Study on space motion sickness before, during and after spaceflight].

Space motion sickness has long been a difficult medical problem in human space flight. Because it is a group of syndromes of the astronauts in adaptation to the new space environment and is related to a wide range of factors, the research of space motion sickness is different from that of cardiovascular and pulmonary system. Subjective methods and qualitative investigation are frequently used, and quantitative analysis is limited since objective stimuli that can be used in specific space environment are few and the samples are small. So precise localization of the problem is very difficult. In

Vestibular suppression during space flight.

Normal movements performed while voluntarily fixing the head to the torso can lead to motion sickness in susceptible individuals. The underlying mechanism may involve excessive suppression of vestibular responses. A similar motor strategy is often adopted in the early days of a space flight and might contribute to the development of space motion sickness. In a recent experiment, we monitored the eye, head and upper torso rotations of four Life and Microgravity Spacelab crew members. For the purposes of this study, all data were excluded except for periods during which the subject was performin

An earth-stationary perceived visual scene during roll and yaw motions in a flight simulator.

A flight simulator was used for two experiments to determine the amplitude combinations of visual scene motion (with respect to the observer) and inertial body motion (with respect to an earth-fixed frame) that provide the perception of an earth-stationary visual scene and realistic simulated self-motion. In the first experiment, this range was determined for simulated self-motion about the longitudinal body axis, while in the second, self-motion about the vertical body axis was considered. Both the inertial and the visual motions consisted of 0.75 a accelerations, followed by 1.50 s decelerat

[Effect of furosemide on the carbonic anhydrase activity in vestibule].

In order to explore the mechanism that the furosemide dehydrates and improves the vestibular function in the endolymphatic hydrops. The effects of furosemide on the carbonic anhydrase activity in vestibule were studied by using histocytochemistry and image analysis. The results demonstrated that the furosemide can obviously inhibit the carbonic anhydrase activity. There was no significant difference between the normal ear and the ear with endolymphatic hydrops in the location of the carbonic anhydrase in the vestibule. It suggested that one of the dehydrant mechanisms is inhibition of carbonic

Differential sensitivity to rotation measured on potentials evoked by electrical stimulation of the guinea-pig ear.

Responses to electrical stimulation of the ear applied between round-window and vertex electrodes were recorded in awake guinea-pigs from the same electrodes or from separate vertex/mastoid subdermal needle electrodes. They were averaged during opposite phases of sinusoidal rotation or before and after constant velocity rotation. In both cases the responses were subtracted from each other and yielded differential per- or post-rotatory "electrovestibular" responses. For comparison, responses were also recorded in the same animals and conditions of electrical stimulation during silence and durin

Glycocalyx and ciliary interconnections in bullfrog vestibular end organs: normal structure and changes after incubation in frog Ringer's solution.

The ultrastructure of ciliary interconnecting systems as well as changes after incubation in frog Ringer's solution of the bullfrog vestibular end organs were investigated by using a scanning electron microscopy. The plasma membrane of the sensory hairs showed rather rough appearance. Side links emerged from the plasma membrane and tightly connected neighboring cilia. The tip links stretched from the tips of the stereocilia to their taller neighbors. These tip links were arranged in a same direction towards the kinocilium. These findings indicate that the side links may keep the cilia arranged

Morphology of the membrana limitans.

The morphology of the membrana limitans (ML) was studied by light and electron microscopy to further understand its functional significance. The ML is a porous shield composed of a few to several layers of tightly packed fibrocytes that separate the perilymphatic space of the cochlea and saccule from that of the utricle and canal system. These fibrocytes are thinner on the side of the vestibule. They show many desmosomes and gap junctions and are interspersed with fibrils. The 3-dimensional reconstruction from celloidin sections shows that the ML, as it is viewed from the anterior side, is rec
