Management Of Penetrating Injury To Thoracic Inlet And Lower Neck With Retained Foreign Body Using Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery.

Penetrating neck and chest injuries are a common form of occupational injuries. We hereby report a unique case in which a metallic rod had penetrated the left chest and neck of a plastic factory worker. The patient was vitally stable when he presented to Emergency Room. Chest X-ray was performed and the patient was rushed to the operating room. VATS (video assisted thoracoscopic surgery) and neck dissection was done for retrieval of the metallic rod. On table, endoscopy was also done to rule out injury to oesophagus. No injury to vital structures was found and the subsequent recovery was uneve

Successful resection of esophageal carcinoma with aberrant right subclavian artery using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery: report of two cases.

The right non-recurrent inferior laryngeal nerve (NRILN) is a rare nerve anomaly that communicates the laryngeal nerve to the right vagal nerve trunk directly in the neck, which is usually accompanied by aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA). We report on two cases of thoracic esophageal carcinoma undertaken in patients with these abnormalities: a 73-year-old woman with progressive dysphagia and a 63-year-old asymptomatic man. Although there have been 10 cases of thoracic esophageal carcinomas associated with ARSA and NRILN in literature, as far as we are aware of, this is the first report t

Perioperative diclofenac application during video-assisted thoracic surgery pleurodesis modulates early inflammatory and fibrinolytic processes in an experimental model.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: It has been substantiated that the quality of pleurodesis is reduced when non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used perioperatively. The effects of NSAID administration on the early inflammatory and fibrinolytic processes after mechanical pleurodesis were investigated in an established pig model. METHODS: Left-sided mechanical pleural abrasion was performed on 24 pigs assigned to either an NSAID or a control group. Pleural fluid and blood samples were analysed over a 24-hour period. Histological evaluation of neutrophil influx at the site of pleural abrasion

Outpatient video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for ectopic mediastinal parathyroid adenoma: a case report and review of the literature.

Up to 20% of abnormal parathyroid glands causing primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism are located ectopically. Of these, approximately 1%-2% reside in the mediastinum and may not always be resectable through a traditional cervical approach. Recently, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has arisen as a minimally invasive method for resecting mediastinal parathyroid glands and avoiding the complications and higher morbidity of a sternotomy. In this paper, we present a case of a patient with asymptomatic hyperparathyroidism and an ectopic parathyroid on sestamibi imaging in the medias

Techniques for treating aberrant arteries during resection of pulmonary sequestration by video-assisted thoracic surgery: report of two cases.

We describe the techniques we used for treating aberrant arteries during resection of pulmonary sequestration by video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) in two patients. In patient 1, the aberrant artery was transected after securing six rows of staples with a knifeless vascular endostapler. In patient 2, the aberrant artery was cut after ligation with special forceps that designed by one of us (S.K.) to push a knot, tied outside the body, into the thoracic cavity, then ligate the suture. Left lower lobectomy and right basal segmentectomy were both successfully performed by these methods. These

Delayed retained hemopneumothorax secondary to rib fracture with pulmonary perforation treated by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery: a case report.

Retained hemothorax is a complication of thoracic trauma caused by incomplete pleural drainage and early fibrotic organization, potentially progressing to trapped lung and functional impairment if untreated. A 60-year-old man sustained fractures of the eighth, ninth, and tenth right ribs after a fall, one associated with pulmonary injury. Without initial medical care, he presented 15 days later with progressive dyspnea. Chest radiography showed right lung collapse with massive hemopneumothorax. Closed thoracostomy drained 4000 ml of blood, but lung re-expansion failed due to organized hemothor

Effects of Continuous Intercostal Nerve Block Versus Patient-Controlled Intravenous Analgesia on Postoperative Pain After Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing thoracoscopic surgery often suffer from acute and chronic pain that severely affects their quality of life. To mitigate this, continuous intercostal nerve block (CINB) and patient-controlled intravenous analgesia (PCIA) can be used. However, no studies have compared the analgesic effects of CINB vs. PCIA among patients following video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). OBJECTIVES: To compare the analgesic efficacy of CINB with that of PCIA after VATS. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial. SETTING: Department of Anesthesiology

Frailty in patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for lung cancer: a narrative review of assessment, outcomes and prehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with lung cancer are increasingly being considered for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), including segmentectomy or lobectomy with lymph node assessment. Although VATS reduces surgical trauma compared with thoracotomy, it does not eliminate heterogeneity in physiological reserve, treatment tolerance, or postoperative recovery. Frailty may therefore complement conventional preoperative assessment, which is typically based on chronological age, comorbidity burden, pulmonary function, and cardiac risk. METHODS AND MAIN FINDINGS: This narrative review summarise

Primary Chest Wall Glomus Tumor Resected by Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery: A Case Report with 10-Year Follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: Glomus tumors are rare perivascular neoplasms that typically occur in the distal extremities. Their occurrence in the chest wall is extremely rare, with only 13 cases previously reported in the English literature. Herein, we report a unique case of a primary chest wall glomus tumor in a patient who presented with severe, rapidly worsening back pain, underwent 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-PET/CT (FDG-PET/CT) evaluation, and experienced complete pain resolution following thoracoscopic resection. Non-intubated video-assisted thoracic surgery with an integrated postoperative strategy for secondary spontaneous pneumothorax in high-risk patients.

BACKGROUND: Non-intubated video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is an option for the treatment of secondary spontaneous pneumothorax (SSP) in high-risk patients. Although persistent air leakage remains a major postoperative challenge, the efficacy of subsequent treatment to arrest such leakage has not been fully clarified. This study aimed to describe the surgical procedures and postoperative management of non-intubated VATS and to evaluate treatment outcomes. METHODS: A single-center retrospective study was conducted on patients who underwent non-intubated VATS for intractable SSP between 2

Effect of press needle stimulation on postoperative pulmonary complications in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery patients: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing high-risk surgical procedures frequently experience postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) that impact outcomes. Acupuncture has demonstrated potential benefits during surgery. Press needle stimulation is increasingly recognized as an alternative to conventional techniques. We aimed to evaluate the effect of press needle stimulation on PPCs in patients with lung cancer undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. METHODS: Eighty-seven patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery were randomized into press needle (n = 48) or sham needle (n

Impact of preoperative anemia on postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery: a multi-institutional retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) involves unique physiological challenges, including single-lung ventilation, that may amplify the effects of reduced oxygen-carrying capacity in anemic patients. Despite the minimally invasive nature of VATS, the specific impact of preoperative anemia on outcomes following these procedures remains inadequately characterized. METHODS: We conducted a multi-institutional retrospective cohort study using TriNetX research network data (2010-2024). Adults undergoing VATS with preoperative hemoglobin measurements were included. Comparison of non-intubated and intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for perioperative complications-a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Non-intubated video-assisted thoracic surgery (NIVATS) avoids lung injury and intubation-related complications from mechanical ventilation, but the intraoperative safety and postoperative recovery quality of NIVATS remain controversial. Consequently, we systematically assessed the viability and safety of non-intubated video-assisted thoracic surgery (NIVATS) in comparison to intubated video-assisted thoracic surgery (IVATS). These findings provide evidence for optimizing anesthetic and surgical decision-making. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, OVID, and G
