Despite the prominent role of physicians in the child abuse reporting statutes of all 50 states, there is little published information concerning child abuse reporting by physicians. Our study examines the number and type of child abuse reports originating from physicians compared to other reporting sources. Reports by physicians comprised only 8% of the total number of child abuse reports received in Virginia in 1983. Using secondary data, an analysis was done of the prevalence of inappropriate clinical care among 3,149 Virginia Medicaid nursing home residents. Six types of inappropriate care were examined: the underprovision of skilled nursing care, physical rehabilitation and routine medical care; and the overuse of psychotropic drugs, physical restraints and urinary catheterization. A behavioral observation scale (Virginia Polydipsia Scale; VPS) for monitoring drinking patterns was developed and its reliability tested during 25 hours of tandem ratings among six patients with the syndrome of psychosis, intermittent hyponatremia, and polydipsia (PIPS). These ratings were compared to those collected from a control group of six psychiatric inpatients who were similarly observed for 25 hours. Twenty-two cases of cystic hygromas were diagnosed prenatally at Eastern Virginia Medical School and followed through the neonatal period. Our series was combined with 131 cases which have been described in the literature. Karyotypes were obtained in 110 fetuses and 80 (72.7 per cent) were abnormal. Fifty-one were not terminated: 30 with abnormal and 21 with normal karyotypes. There were no neonatal survivors in the group with abnormal karyotypes. Retention in peer recovery programs is critical for individuals with opioid use disorder involved in the criminal justice system. This study examined predictors of one-month retention in the Empowered Communities Opioid Project, a peer recovery support program serving adults across five Virginia health districts. Acute gastric dilation resulting in death was identified in two adult black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) housed at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia.
