The acrocallosal syndrome (ACS) is a probable autosomal recessive condition of macrocephaly, craniofacial and hand and foot abnormalities, absence of the corpus callosum, and mental retardation. This patient had characteristics of the ACS but also had a severe congenital heart defect and other visceral malformations. After comparing the ACS with and contrasting it to other disorders, we concluded that the internal organ abnormalities found in this patient probably represent further manifestations of the ACS.

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGPN) is a rare, chronic granulomatous inflammation that leads to diffuse destruction of the renal parenchyma. This destructive process may be so profound as to infiltrate surrounding tissues and viscera. Although nephrectomy remains the most common option for managing XGPN in adults, we report a case of XGPN in a horseshoe kidney of a 27-year-old woman on active immunosuppressive therapy for inflammatory bowel disease, namely ulcerative colitis. This case was successfully treated conservatively with antimicrobials, with complete resolution of the renal mass…

Chilaiditi sign, a rare radiographic finding of hepatodiaphragmatic interposition of hollow viscera, colon or bowel, was first described by Demetrius Chilaiditi. Diaphragmatic eventration occurs when there is a partial or entire elevation of the diaphragm due to thinned musculature of the diaphragm itself. We present a case report of a 47 year old male patient who presented to emergency department with breathlessness, fever & chest pain. This case carries a clinical significance as it could have let to a wide range of complications like bowel volvulus, obstruction & perforation.

Acute Budd-Chiari syndrome is a rare condition characterised by obstruction of hepatic venous outflow. We describe the case of a 52-year-old man, with a congenital Morgagni diaphragmatic hernia, who presented with acute onset abdominal pain, shortness of breath, lactic acidosis, hyperbilirubinaemia and transaminasaemia. Computed tomography revealed strangulation of the diaphragmatic hernia and extrinsic compression of the inferior vena cava from the herniated viscera. Emergency surgery was carried out to repair the hernia with a biosynthetic mesh, with complete resolution of the Budd-Chiari sy…

Situs anomalies are a heterogenous class of inborn visceral and vascular abnormalities with a broad range of radiographic characteristics. Situs inversus totalis is characterized by mirror image location of the heart and viscera relative to situs solitus (normal position). Few aberrations involving the neuraxis, and rarely intracranial aneurysms, have been reported in association with situs inversus totalis. We describe the radiological findings and endovascular management of one of the first of its kind: the association of bilateral carotid cavernous aneurysms (one large and the other small-s…

Primary cutaneous lymphomas (CLs) are a heterogeneous group of lymphoproliferative neoplasms, with lymphatic proliferation limited to the skin with no involvement of lymph nodes, bone marrow or viscera at the diagnosis. Cutaneous lymphomas originate from mature T-lymphocytes (65% of all cases), mature B-lymphocytes (25%) or NK cells. Histopathological evaluation including immunophenotyping of the skin biopsy specimen is the basis of the diagnosis, which must be complemented with a precise staging of the disease and identification of prognostic factors, to allow for the choice of the best treat…

A 12-day-old Brown Kiwi (Apteryx mantelli) was presented with anorexia, torticollis, head-tilt, and coelomic distension. Radiographs showed an ill-defined, fat-opaque, coelomic mass displacing viscera craniodorsally. Curvilinear mineral opacities were superimposed over the ventral aspect of the mass. Computed tomography demonstrated the presence of mineral within the periphery of a fat attenuating mass consistent with a retained yolk sac. A deutectomy (yolk sac excision) was performed. Histopathology of the excised tissue confirmed the diagnosis of a retained yolk sac with multifocal mineraliz…

INTRODUCTION: Situs inversus totalis (mirror image organs) is a rare condition and may affect the intra-abdominal viscera as well as the intrathoracic organs. Cholelithiasis is not more common in these conditions, but the diagnosis may be more difficult.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 59-year-old African woman with gallstones and situs inversus totalis. A single-port cholecystectomy was performed using a single trocar access device (SITRACC).
CONCLUSIONS: The procedure was uneventful, showing that this approach may be an option for this kind of surgery even in patients with situ…

Injury to the male external genitalia and rupture of the diaphragm, are two very uncommon autopsy findings. To the best of our knowledge such a combination of injuries has not been reported in one particular case of autopsy in an English scientific literature. Degloving of the male external genitalia & rupture of the diaphragm may result from motor vehicle accidents, industrial accidents, gunshot & stab injuries. A rare case of traumatic degloving injury of the male external genitalia associated with rupture of the diaphragm & intermingling of thoracic & abdominal viscera is presented here.

Arterial occlusive diseases are highly prevalent and constitute the leading overall cause of death. Adverse events are due to the effects of impaired circulation on critical end organs, namely the brain, heart, abdominal viscera or extremities. Acute thromboembolism remains a major surgical challenge. Even with optimal surgical management, acute lower extremity ischemia resulting from thromboembolic ds continues to cause significant morbidity and mortality. We report a case of thromboembolism of the left popliteal artery by an Ascaris worm in a patient with oriental cholangiohepatitis.

The subperitoneal space is a large, unifying, anatomically continuous potential space that connects the peritoneal cavity with the retroperitoneum. This space is formed by the subserosal areolar tissue that lines the inner surfaces of the peritoneum and the musculature of the abdomen and pelvis. It contains the branches of the vascular, lymphatic, and nervous systems that supply the viscera. The subperitoneal space extends into the peritoneal cavity and is invested between the layers of the mesenteries and ligaments that support and interconnect the abdominal and pelvic organs. As such, it pro…

An inflammatory pseudotumour of the temporal bone is a rare, idiopathic, fibro-inflammatory lesion which mimics malignancy. Although such a lesion is known to occur elsewhere in the body such as the liver, abdominal viscera, pelvis, thorax and the upper respiratory tract, the involvement of the temporal bone is extremely unusual. We present such a case in a 60-year-old man, which provided a great diagnostic challenge. We review the key radiological and histological results that confirmed the diagnosis and demonstrated for the first time that oral steroids alone may completely resolve the condi…

A case of giant angiomyolipoma of the kidney discovered during the study of a light lumbar trauma is presented. Disseminated tuberous sclerosis lesions are demonstrated at the brain, cerebellum, liver and contralateral kidney. External cutaneous stigmas of this illness are shown at the face. The size of the viscera and the loss of function of the left kidney conditioned the nephrectomy. The piece weighed upon extracting 6300 g, without malignant signs. To the microscopic exam atrophic sclerosis for compression was demonstrated. The postoperative course was satisfactory. Actually his arterial t…

Retroperitoneal haematoma following blunt or penetrating trauma may arise from injuries to bone, major vascular structures, hollow viscera or solid organs. Clinical significance varies from inconsequential to fatal. Although the guidelines for exploration are clear-cut during laparotomy for associated intra-abdominal injuries, this is not the case with isolated retroperitoneal haematoma. Lateral and pelvic haematomas may be selectively explored and central haematomas always need exploration. All penetrating wound tracts should be explored, irrespective of the site of the haematoma, to exclude …
