A large portion of the central nervous system is dedicated to vision and therefore strokes have a high likelihood of involving vision in some way. Vision loss can be the most disabling residual effect after a cerebral infarction. Transient vision problems can likewise be a harbinger of stroke and prompt evaluation after recognition of visual symptoms can prevent future vascular injury. In this review, we discuss the visual aspects of stroke. First, anatomy and the vascular supply of the visual system are considered. Then, the different stroke syndromes which involve vision are discussed. Final

Different degrees of eye dominance may need to be considered when comparing monocular and binocular performance or estimating binocular summation effects. The purpose of this study was to explore eye dominance under binocular viewing conditions and observe gradual differences in preference. Two binocular eye-dominance tests were evaluated and compared to the hole-in-the-card sighting test. The first experiment was based on a binocular sighting test. The second originated from the variable-angle mirror test, utilizing physiological diplopia to determine which eye dominates the binocular percept

BACKGROUND: Although the alternate cover test is a widely accepted test of ocular alignment, clinical ambiguity exists with regard to the specific location of the examiner. This study was an attempt to replicate the findings of a previous study that compared two examiner positions and their effect on heterophoria measurement at 40 cm.
METHODS: Fifty-seven adult subjects (mean age, 24.0 +/- 2.88 years) with normal binocular vision were measured for heterophoria posture using the alternate cover test while the examiner position was varied between midline and offset 30 degrees to the right of pa

A comparison between 100 percent correct response thresholds of stereopsis for nine subjects measured with and without viewing using a 33 percent difference in ocular image magnification is presented. Two subjects performed threshold settings, using the method of adjustments, with 1, 5, 10, 15, and 33 percent magnification differences. The extent of the increase explains reports of stereopsis in corrected unilateral aphakia.

Ophthalmic disease encountered in the intensive care unit (ICU) has a wide spectrum of prevalence and severity. Prolonged exposure of the cornea is common and preventable. Trauma, glaucoma, infection, vascular disease, and burns are among the potential causes of vision loss. Patients are predisposed to ocular complications by the ICU environment and critical illness itself. Critically ill patients require prioritization of life-sustaining interventions, and less emphasis is placed on ophthalmic disease, leading to missed opportunities for vision-saving intervention. It is therefore imperative

Giant cell arteritis with ocular involvement is an ocular emergency. Arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (AAION) is the most common ophthalmological manifestation associated with this disease. Visual loss is usually permanent with rare cases showing visual recovery. Visual improvement, if it occurs, is generally limited, and the visual field defects are persistent and severe. The main goal of AAION treatment is the preservation of vision in the fellow eye. In patients with neurophthalmological manifestations, high-dose corticosteroids should be initiated immediately and aggressively,

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality is being increasingly applied in vision therapy. However, the differences in effectiveness, optimal treatment cycle, and prognosis between virtual reality-based vision therapy and traditional therapies remain unknown. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of virtual reality-based vision therapy and office-based vergence/accommodative therapy in young adults with convergence insufficiency or accommodative dysfunction.
METHODS: The patients were randomly assigned to either the virtual reality-based vision therapy group or the office-based vergenc

We challenge Fleming and Michel's claim that conscious vision is too slow for real-time action. Correlative and functional evidence suggest that conscious perception can emerge around 200 ms post-stimulus and guide behavior. Due to their reliance on rare postdiction effects and assumptions about unconscious vision, they underestimate the speed of conscious vision and overestimate the functional relevance of unconscious vision.

A strict lower limit of 400 ms is suggested for the formation of conscious vision. This processing delay could result from the need to create a unified percept over visual features processed with different time constants, and even longer intentional visual processes. Given the flexibility of these processing times, we question the need for a strict lower limit for conscious vision.

Understanding the visual systems of birds can inform conservation efforts and mitigate the impact of collisions with human-made structures. Here, we investigated the visual abilities of the black grouse, Lyrurus tetrix (Galliformes: Phasianidae), a European mountain bird highly vulnerable to collisions with aerial infrastructures. We show that black grouse have wide monocular lateral visual fields, extensive binocular overlap and a minimal blind area behind the head, altogether indicating the ability to detect aerial objects from different fields of view. The spatial resolution and contrast se

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of central vision loss, progressively impairing the retina and affecting millions worldwide. By 2040, global cases of AMD are projected to reach 300 million, posing a significant public health challenge. While early AMD may only cause mild visual impairment, advanced stages, particularly neovascular (wet) and non-neovascular (dry) AMD, can lead to severe vision loss or legal blindness, substantially affecting daily life. The introduction of anti-angiogenic therapies has revolutionized wet AMD treatment, offering a high probability of pr

Natural variation in environmental turbidity correlates with variation in the visual sensory system of many fishes, suggesting that turbidity may act as a strong selective agent on visual systems. Since many aquatic systems experience increased turbidity due to anthropogenic perturbations, it is important to understand the degree to which fish can respond to rapid shifts in their visual environment, and whether such responses can occur within the lifetime of an individual. We examined whether developmental exposure to turbidity (clear, <5 NTU; turbid, ∼9 NTU) influenced the size of morphologic

Vision requires that we rotate our eyes frequently to look at informative structures in the scene. Eye movements are planned by the brain but their execution depends on the mechanical properties of the oculomotor plant, that is, the arrangement of eyeball position, muscle insertions, and pulley locations. Therefore, the biomechanics of rotations is sensitive to eyeball translation because it changes muscle levers. Eyeball translations are little researched as they are difficult to measure with conventional techniques. Here, we investigated the effects of eyeball translation on the coordination

Visual input plays an important role in the development of myopia (nearsightedness), a visual disorder that blurs vision at far distances. The risk of myopia progression increases with the time spent reading and decreases with outdoor activity for reasons that remain poorly understood. To investigate the stimulus parameters driving this disorder, we compared the visual input to the retina of humans performing two tasks associated with different risks of myopia progression, reading and walking. Human subjects performed the two tasks while wearing glasses with cameras and sensors that recorded v

Loss of vision is a prominent feature of aging and vision is considered by many to be the most valuable sense to be lost. In our graying society, we are increasingly challenged by age-related deterioration of the central nervous system (CNS), as well as by age-associated neurodegenerative diseases and brain injuries, all often affecting the visual system and thus its performance. Here, we describe two visually driven behavior assays to evaluate visual performance upon aging or CNS damage in the fast-aging killifish. The first test, the optokinetic response (OKR), measures the reflexive eye mov

Optogenetics is a new approach for controlling neural circuits with numerous applications in both basic and clinical science. In retinal degenerative diseases, the photoreceptors die, but inner retinal cells remain largely intact. By expressing light sensitive proteins in the remaining cells, optogenetics has the potential to offer a novel approach to restoring vision. In the past several years, optogenetics has advanced into an early clinical stage, and promising results have been reported. At the current stage, there is an urgent need to develop hardware and software for clinical training, t
