In this article, I examine epidemiological research into scrub typhus in British Malaya between 1924 and 1974. Interwar research, I show, explained the incidence of the disease through conjunctions of rats, mites, plantations, lalang grass, and "jungle." In the process, interwar researchers bridged a novel scientific vocabulary centering on disease "reservoirs" with older suspicions of plantations enabling "pests," as well as with a later, explicitly ecological understanding of infectious disease. Nine children who had enteroviral meningitis during the first three months of life and nine matched control children were evaluated for possible sequelae of their infection. We report the case of C.H., a 48-year-old patient with global amnesia caused by herpes simplex encephalitis at the age of 20 and subsequent extensive bilateral temporal lobe lesions. Neuropsychological examinations performed at various intervals found persistent dense explicit memory impairment and limited vocabulary, yet intact procedural memory. This study investigated the role of sequential processing in spoken language outcomes for children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), ages 5;3-11;4, by comparing them to children with typical hearing (TH), ages 6;3-9;7, on sequential learning and memory tasks involving easily nameable and difficult-to-name visual stimuli. This study compared the comprehension of 20 idioms of normal children with children exhibiting mild mental retardation. Sixty-six children comprised three groups: normal 9-year-olds, 9-year-old children with mild mental retardation, and younger normal children matched with the mentally retarded children by receptive vocabulary age.
