Physical and Behavioral Health Characteristics of Aging Homeless Women in the United States: An Integrative Review.

Background: The average age of the homeless population is and will continue to rise. Although women comprise a significant and growing percentage of this vulnerable population, their age- and sex-specific health characteristics are poorly understood. Materials and Methods: This integrative review appraises published research addressing the physical and behavioral health characteristics of aging homeless women (≥50 years) in the United States (2000-2019). The authors searched six electronic databases to identify eligible studies. Studies were screened for methodological quality by using the Joh

Shelter From the Health Care Storm.

Homelessness is a well-known social determinant of health, but health status also correlates with housing instability, a broader term that encompasses everything from trouble paying rent to living in overcrowded conditions and to moving frequently. UnitedHealthcare Community Plan-Arizona gives beneficiaries shelter with the hope that health care spending on them will go down.

Belief in Social Mobility Mitigates Hostility Resulting From Disadvantaged Social Standing.

Comparing economically unfavorably with similar others has detrimental consequences for an individual, ultimately resulting in low physical health, delinquency, and hostility. In four studies ( N = 2,032), we examined whether believing in a mobile society-one offering fair chances and opportunity-mitigates hostile emotions resulting from disadvantaged social standing. We find that with increasing mobility belief, negative comparisons have gradually less impact on hostility. Specifically, measured (Studies 1 and 4) and manipulated (Studies 2 and 3) social mobility belief moderated the link betw

PUBLIC POLICY, CHILD DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH AND BOYS AT RISK: CHALLENGING, ENDURING AND NECESSARY PARTNERSHIP.

Research findings documenting the issues and challenges of boys prebirth through age 5 years have barely penetrated the arena of public policy making nor has it permeated the public agenda of politicians, government, or other funding stakeholders. The purpose of this article is to articulate pathways for researchers to enter into the policy-making process. We review critical issues related to implementing the process of public policy. We argue that the policy process needs to be informed by more dynamic theoretical models of human development, and that researchers and clinicians need to be exp

A Descriptive Study of Gambling Among Emerging Adult Males in French-Speaking Switzerland.

The aims were twofold: to examine the gambling habits of emerging adult males in the French-speaking regions of Switzerland and to what extent these habits predict problem gambling within this population. We also evaluated problem gambling rates and provided data concerning variables such as gambling location, level of information about problem gambling and awareness of treatment centers. 606 Swiss male conscripts, aged 18-22 years, completed a self-report questionnaire. This was administered during their army recruitment day in 2012. Problem gambling was assessed through the Problem Gambling

Developing a structured approach to safeguarding education.

Safeguarding vulnerable adults and children is a legal requirement and is essential in nursing and healthcare practice. This article describes the development and establishment of a structured approach to safeguarding education and student support in one pre-registration nursing programme in the UK. This approach involved the development of an academic safeguarding lead role, extensive curriculum development, and implementation of policies and procedures for raising and escalating concerns. The authors suggest that this integrative and comprehensive model should be used in all higher education

Loneliness, social relations and health and well-being in deprived communities.

There is a growing policy concern about the extent of loneliness in advanced societies, and its prevalence among various social groups. This study looks at loneliness among people living in deprived communities, where there may be additional barriers to social engagement including low incomes, fear of crime, poor services and transient populations. The aim was to examine the prevalence of loneliness, and also its associations with different types of social contacts and forms of social support, and its links to self-reported health and well-being in the population group. The method involved a c

Midwives' perceptions of organisational structures and processes influencing their ability to provide caseload care to socially disadvantaged and vulnerable women.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined midwives' perceptions of organisational structures and processes of care when working in a caseload model (Midwifery Group Practice MGP) for socially disadvantaged and vulnerable childbearing women. DESIGN: This study used Donabedian's theoretical framework for evaluating the quality of health care provision. Of the 17 eligible midwives, 15 participated in focus group discussions and two others provided written comments. Thematic analysis was guided by three headings; clinical outcomes, processes of care and organisational structure. FINDINGS: Midwives believed

The social model of disability: dichotomy between impairment and disability.

The rhetoric of the social model of disability is presented, and its basic claims are critiqued. Proponents of the social model use the distinction between impairment and disability to reduce disabilities to a single social dimension-social oppression. They downplay the role of biological and mental conditions in the lives of disabled people. Consequences of denying biological and mental realities involving disabilities are discussed. People will benefit most by recognizing both the biological and the social dimensions of disabilities.

Sexual maltreatment of unaccompanied asylum-seeking minors from the Horn of Africa: a mixed method study focusing on vulnerability and prevention.

OBJECTIVES: The study described in this paper sought to identify the social, cultural, and political factors that effect African unaccompanied asylum-seeking minors' (UASM) vulnerability to sexual maltreatment in England. It aimed to illuminate how child protection measures could be strengthened for this highly marginalized group. METHODS: A mixed method approach was used. Former UASM from Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia who had been sexually maltreated in the UK were interviewed in-depth. Prior to the interviews they all completed a questionnaire which captured their biographical details as we

A dyad-based analysis of social support dynamics among adolescent/young adult cancer survivors and their parents from a predominately Hispanic/Latino, socioeconomically disadvantaged, and rural population.

PURPOSE: Social support can ameliorate the challenges faced by childhood cancer survivors and their parents as survivors transition into adulthood. This study examined social support dynamics within adolescent/young adult (AYA)-parent dyads by comparing their support needs and gaps. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in collaboration with a community-based organization serving predominately socioeconomically disadvantaged, Hispanic/Latino (H/L), rural families affected by childhood cancer in California. English- and Spanish-speaking AYA childhood cancer survivors (≥ 15 years old, ≥

Psychometric evaluation of the UCLA-8 loneliness scale among structurally vulnerable older adults in rural India: implications for equity-oriented screening in primary health care.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is recognized by the World Health Organization as a major global public health concern, with well-documented consequences for mental and physical health. Yet it remains under-prioritized in public health programs, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In rural India, intersecting vulnerabilities-caste, gender, and widowhood-exacerbate risks of social isolation and loneliness in later life. Despite commitments under the National Programme for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE), validated screening tools are lacking in primary care. OBJECTIVE: To evalu

Assessment of socioeconomic and health vulnerability among urban slum dwellers in Bangladesh: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Bangladesh is rapidly urbanizing and approximately half of its urban population resides in deprived slums with limited access to basic needs. However, there is a dearth of information on vulnerability levels among slum dwellers. We aimed to assess the level of vulnerability within and between slums via various socioeconomic and health indicators. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 810 randomly selected households was conducted in two purposively selected slums, Korail and Shyampur, in Dhaka from November to December 2021. Data was collected on various indicators, including demog

Social vulnerability: The connection between psychiatric disorders and thiamine deficiency in pregnant women.

The evaluation of thiamine and its derivative phosphate esters levels in pregnant women in rural communities can contribute not only for understanding the specific characteristics of this population regarding nutritional aspects, but also for clarifying the relations of psychiatric manifestations and a vitamin deficit. In the present work we assessed sociodemographic variables, psychiatric parameters and thiamine and its derivative in the whole blood of women in a rural, low-income community in Brazil. A case-control study was done. 94 women were divided in groups using the trimesters of pregn

Aging in Flood-Prone Coastal Areas: Discerning the Health and Well-Being Risk for Older Residents.

Coastal communities are increasingly exposed to more intense and frequent hurricanes, accelerated sea-level rise, and prolonged tidal inundation, yet they are often a preferred retirement destination for older adults vulnerable to flooding and extreme weather events. The unique physical and psychosocial challenges of older population age 65 and over may affect their level of preparedness, capacity to cope with, and ability to respond and recover from a hazard event. Despite the clear vulnerabilities of older residents living in high-risk areas when compared to younger coastal populations, ther

HIV and syphilis in the context of community vulnerability among indigenous people in the Brazilian Amazon.

BACKGROUND: Contextual factors shape the risk of acquiring human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and syphilis. We estimated the prevalence of both infections among indigenous people in nine indigenous health districts of the Brazilian Amazon and examined the context of community vulnerability to acquiring these infections. METHODS: We trained 509 health care workers to screen sexually active populations in the community for syphilis and HIV using rapid testing (RT). We then assessed the prevalence of HIV and syphilis using RT. A multivariable analysis was used to identify factors associated with

An exploratory analysis of factors associated with depression in a vulnerable group of young people living in informal settlements in South Africa.

Depression amongst young people is a major health challenge and is often shaped by social marginalisation. Informal settlements are growing rapidly. There is a need to deepen understandings of depression amongst young people in these contexts. We sought to understand factors associated with depressive symptomology amongst 232 young people (122 women, 110 men) aged 18-30 in urban informal settlements in South Africa. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data collected for the Stepping Stones and Creating Futures pilot. Logistic regression modelled relationships between depressive
