Neuropsychological development in children with Dravet syndrome.

PURPOSE: Aim of this study is to report a detailed profile of neuropsychological development in children with Dravet syndrome. METHODS: Twelve children with Dravet syndrome were longitudinally assessed using a detailed clinical and neuropsychological evaluation. Six had typical features of severe myoclonic epilepsy in infancy (SMEI) whereas the other six resulted borderline. All twelve underwent serial neuropsychological assessments with neurodevelopmental scales and further assessment of specific cognitive abilities. RESULTS: Our results reported an apparent normal development before diseas

Brain age gap as a diffusion MRI-based marker of traumatic brain injury-related brain changes and associated outcomes.

Traumatic brain injury is a common neurological disorder and a leading cause of long-term disability, presenting with heterogeneous cognitive, emotional, and functional impairments. A critical clinical challenge is the early identification of patients at risk for persistent symptoms. The Brain Age Gap (BAG), the difference between an individual's predicted brain age from imaging data and their chronological age, has emerged as a potential marker of injury-related brain changes. Here, we aim to evaluate diffusion-MRI-derived BAG for identifying traumatic brain injury patients (Glasgow Coma Scal

Characteristics of university students supported by counseling services: Analysis of psychological tests and pulse rate variability.

OBJECTIVE: Mental health is an essential issue during adolescence. The number of students who use counseling services is increasing in universities. We attempted to confirm the characteristics of the students who access counseling services using both psychological tests and pulse rate variability (PRV) for better support for students' academic success. METHODS: We recruited the participants for this study from the students who had counseling sessions at Kanazawa University (Group S). As a control group, we also recruited students who had no experience in counseling services (Group H). We obta

Selegiline for Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia in older people accounting for some 60% of cases with late-onset cognitive deterioration. It is now thought that several neurotransmitter dysfunctions are involved from an early stage in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease-associated cognitive decline. The efficacy of selegiline for symptoms of Alzheimer's disease remains controversial and is reflected by its low rate of prescription and the lack of approval by several regulatory authorities in Europe and elsewhere. Reasons for this uncertainty involve the modest overall

Exploring the use of the National Institutes of Health Toolbox Cognition Battery with children and adolescents with Pompe disease: Preliminary findings.

BACKGROUND: Although Pompe disease (PD) was originally characterized as a metabolic myopathy, there is now emerging evidence of neurological involvement in children and adolescents with infantile-onset Pompe disease (IOPD). Therefore, assessing cognition and detecting cognitive changes in these individuals over time have become important components of their care. The National Institutes of Health Toolbox Cognition Battery (NIHT-CB, Version 2) is a brief, standardized instrument designed to measure cognitive processes in individuals 3-85 years of age. With its availability and ease of administr

Effect of age, cerebral infarcts, vasculopathy and haemoglobin on cognitive function, in Tanzanian children with sickle cell anaemia.

BACKGROUND: Developmental difficulties in many cognitive domains are common in children with sickle cell anaemia (SCA). Children with stroke are most affected but delayed or atypical cognitive function has been reported in children with SCA and silent infarcts (SCI), vasculopathy, and normal brain MRI. However, very few studies of cognition have been conducted in Africa, a continent with 75% of the SCA burden. We therefore investigated cognitive profiles in Tanzanian children with SCA and examined the impact of age, SCI, vasculopathy, and haemoglobin concentration (Hb). METHODS: Children aged

[Schooling of patients exhibiting Autism Spectrum Disorders without mental retardation].

INTRODUCTION: Autism Spectrum Disorders belong to Pervasive Development Disorders. Although access to education is recommended by the French National High Authority for Health (HAS), the practice remains limited and the reasons for the low education rate of these children have still not been sufficiently explored in the literature. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to analyze the links between Autism Spectrum Disorder without mental retardation, psychiatric comorbidity and education. The secondary objective was to analyze the cognitive and contextual factors that could limit edu

Cholinesterase inhibitors for rarer dementias associated with neurological conditions.

BACKGROUND: Rarer dementias include Huntington's disease (HD), cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), dementia in multiple sclerosis (MS) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Cholinesterase inhibitors, including donepezil, galantamine and rivastigmine, are considered to be the first-line medicines for Alzheimer's disease and some other dementias, such as dementia in Parkinson's disease. Cholinesterase inhibitors are hypothesised to work by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) which b

Atypical language characteristics and trajectories in children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

BACKGROUND: 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is a genetic condition associated with a highly variable phenotypic expression. During childhood speech and language deficits are commonly observed. Findings of cross-sectional studies suggest syndrome-specific and changing language profiles, but a longitudinal approach to identify developmental changes is still lacking to date. AIMS: The present study aimed to delineate language characteristics and trajectories by comparing the performance of Dutch-speaking school-aged children with 22q11.2DS (n = 18) to those of peers with idiopathic intelle

Nimodipine for primary degenerative, mixed and vascular dementia.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is an age-related condition in which Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cerebrovascular disease account for the bulk of cases. The role played by calcium in regulating brain functions is well known - the calcium ion links membrane excitation to subsequent intracellular enzymatic response. Change in calcium homeostasis is one important effect of aging with repercussions on higher cortical functions. Nimodipine is an isopropyl calcium channel blocker which can easily cross the blood brain barrier. Its primary action is to reduce the number of open channels, thus restricting influx

Health and aging in elderly farmers: the AMI cohort.

BackgroundThe health of the agricultural population has been previously explored, particularly in relation to the farming exposures and among professionally active individuals. However, few studies specifically focused on health and aging among elders retired from agriculture. Yet, this population faces the long-term effects of occupational exposures and multiple difficulties related to living and aging in rural area (limited access to shops, services, and practitioners). However, these difficulties may be counter-balanced by advantages related to healthier lifestyle, richer social support and

Change in Neurocognitive Function in Patients Who Receive CAR-T Cell Therapies: A Steep Hill to Climb.

Immunotherapy with chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapies has brought substantial improvement in clinical outcomes in patients with relapsed/refractory B cell neoplasms. However, complications such as cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) limit the therapeutic efficacy of this treatment approach. ICANS can have a broad range of clinical manifestations, while various scoring systems have been developed for its grading. Cognitive decline is prevalent in CAR-T therapy recipients including impaired attention, difficulty in it

Computerized cognitive training in post-treatment hematological cancer survivors: a feasibility study.

BackgroundComputerized cognitive training (CCT) programs have shown some effectiveness in alleviating cognitive symptoms in long-term cancer survivors. For patients presenting with cognitive symptoms in the early post-treatment phase, the benefit of CCT is unclear. To assess the possibility of testing the effectiveness of CCT in the early post-treatment period, our aim was to investigate the feasibility of an 8-week home-based, online CCT intervention among patients who have recently completed treatment for hematological malignancy.MethodsThis study was a single-arm, non-blinded, feasibility s
