Investigation of the vestibulo-ocular system of the squirrel monkey was reviewed in consideration of space motion sickness (SMS), or which is recently more often termed as space adaptation syndrome (SAS). Since the first launching of the space satellite, Sputnik [correction of Sputonik] in October 1957, many experiments were carried out in biological and medical fields. A various kind of creatures were used as experimental models from protozoa to human beings. Rats and monkeys are most favorite animals, particularly the non-human primate seems to be the one, because of its phylogenetic relativ

Bone healing was investigated histologically in a rat fibular osteotomy model subjected to microgravity (shuttle flight STS-29) and the tail suspension microgravity simulation model. Exposure to microgravity or tail suspension occurred during the last 5 days of a 10-day healing period. Periosteal osteogenesis and the development of vascular channels in both experimental groups were similar to that observed in a weightbearing control group. Chondrogenesis was more advanced in weightbearing rats than in either flight or tail-suspended rats. Angiogenesis in the osteotomy gap was more advanced in

Exercise, inactivity and confinement have been used as effective tools to assess the contributions of vascular volume and baroreflexes to orthostatic hypotension associated with exposure to microgravity. Prolonged exposure to bedrest, physical inactivity, or wheelchair confinement removes baroreceptor unloading caused by regular upright standing and induces attenuation of cardiovascular baroreflex responses. The magnitude of reduced baroreflex sensitivity following bedrest or wheelchair confinement is related to the degree of orthostatic hypotension. Reduction in vascular volume caused by bedr

The health condition and work capacity of space travellers during many flights remained adequate. Medical examinations performed during and after space flights consistently revealed the following symptom-complexes: space motion sickness, changes in the muscles system, hemodynamics, fluid-electrolyte balance and its regulation, calcium metabolism and bone density, transient erythrocytopenia and immunity decline. This paper presents a detailed discussion of the changes observed in space flight.

AIM: To analyze visual dysfunction in rats under simulated weightlessness (SW) by examining trans-laminar cribrosa pressure difference (TLCPD) and neuroimmune responses.
METHODS: The 72 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into two groups (ground control and hindlimb unloading-simulated microgravity) using stratified randomization, with each group further subdivided into three exposure durations: SW 2-week (SW-2W), 4-week (SW-4W), and 8-week (SW-8W), n=12 per subgroup. At the designated time points for each group, intraocular pressure (IOP) and intracranial pressure (ICP) were meas…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The cingulate gyrus (CG) is a frequently studied yet not wholly understood area of the human cerebrum. Previous s … no observable responses. Our study reports a unique perceptive phenomenon of a subjective sense of weightlessness/floating sensation triggered by anterior and posterior CG stimulation, in 30% of cases and 21.42% of electrode stimulation sites. Notable findings include functional connections between the insula, the posterior and anterior cingulate cortex, and ne …

The skeleton provides more than only a framework for the body. Bone is a calcified conjunctive tissue sensitive to various mechanical stimuli, mainly to those resulting from gravity and muscular contractions. Numerous animal and human studies demonstrate the importance of weight-bearing physical activity as well as mechanical loading for maintaining skeletal integrity. Lack of weight-bearing activity is dangerous for the skeleton: a decrease in bone mineral density (BMD) has been demonstrated in animals and humans under conditions of weightlessness or immobilization. Other studies have also re…

Although space travel is becoming more accessible, our understanding of how the space environment and microgravity (μG) affect biology, physiology, and human health remains incomplete. This study examined the effects of μG on synaptic signaling and neuromuscular aging in Caenorhabditis elegans. The D01 cohort, consisting of L4 larvae to young adults raised in μG, exhibited a downregulation of genes linked to synaptic signaling, dopamine response, locomotion, cuticle development, and mitochondrial metabolism. This was accompanied by altered synapse dynamics, reduced motility, and shorter body l

OBJECTIVES: Human minor salivary gland stem cells (huMSGSCs) are promising in regenerative medicine. Their multipotent capabilities enable tissue regeneration and offer treatment potential for various diseases. The effects of hypergravity (HyperG) and microgravity (MicroG) on stemness and therapeutic potential are not well explored. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of short-term HyperG and MicroG exposure on huMSGSC stemness and differentiation potential for treating salivary gland dysfunction.
METHODS: huMSGSCs were exposed to 1G, MicroG, and HyperG. Cell morphology, proliferat

IMPORTANCE: Astronauts returning from long-duration spaceflight experience ocular remodeling related to cephalad fluid shifts induced by microgravity. It is hypothesized that the absence of diurnal reductions in intracranial pressure in microgravity creates a low but persistent pressure gradient at the posterior aspect of the eye, which results in ocular remodeling and space-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) over many months.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether partial reintroduction of footward fluid shifts during simulated microgravity via lower body negative pressure (LBNP) during sleep

Local abnormal angiogenesis and cardiovascular system reorganization have been observed in embryos exposed to a simulated microgravity (SM) environment. In this study, changes in key molecular signals and pathways in cardiovascular development have been investigated under microgravity conditions. In particular, the caudal vein plexus (CVP) network, formed by sprouting angiogenesis has been chosen. Zebrafish embryos were exposed to SM using a ground-based microgravity bioreactor for 24 and 36 h. The SM was observed to have no effect on the zebrafish length, tail width and incubation time wherea

KEY POINTS: During long-term missions, some astronauts experience structural and functional changes of the eyes and brain which resemble signs/symptoms experienced by patients with intracranial hypertension. Weightlessness prevents the normal cerebral volume and pressure 'unloading' associated with upright postures on Earth, which may be part of the cerebral and ocular pathophysiology. By placing the lower body in a negative pressure device (LBNP) that pulls fluid away from cranial compartments, we simulated effects of gravity and significantly lowered pressure within the brain parenchyma and …

An operationally available diagnostic imaging capability augments spaceflight medical support by facilitating the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of medical or surgical conditions, by improving medical outcomes and, thereby, by lowering medical mission impacts and the probability of crew evacuation due to medical causes. Microgravity-related physiological changes occurring during spaceflight can affect the genitourinary system and potentially cause conditions such as urinary retention or nephrolithiasis for which ultrasonography (U/S) would be a useful diagnostic tool. This study describes

Nearly three decades of space flight research have suggested that there are subclinical diabetogenic changes that occur in microgravity. Alterations in insulin secretion, insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance, and metabolism of protein and amino acids support the hypothesis that insulin plays an essential role in the maintenance of muscle mass in extended-duration space flight. Experiments in flight and after flight and ground-based bedrest studies have associated microgravity and its experimental paradigms with manifestations similar to those of diabetes, physical inactivity, and aging. We p

Exposure to microgravity causes alterations in postural, locomotor and oculomotor functions. The vestibular abnormalities experienced by astronauts entail immediate reflex motor responses, including postural illusions, sensations of rotation, nystagmus, dizziness and vertigo, as well as space motion sickness. Adaptation to the microgravity environment usually occurs within one week, and a subsequent re-adaptation period of several months is often required upon return to Earth. Some astronauts experience recurrences of dizziness, nausea, and vomiting, as well as marked disturbances in postural

The translation of man from terrestrial to an extra terrestrial environment is accompanied by an upset in the servo-control of movement engendered by the removal of the normal gravitational signal. Unfortunately the "natural" response of the nervous system, to ocular and vestibular confusion, is to cause varying degrees of sickness which can only be avoided by choice of suitable space travellers i.e., those who are least upset by gravitational chaos. This will remain so until much more is learned about the fundamental physiological mechanisms whereby man maintains a correct head/trunk, head/ey
