We report a proven case of CJD with prolonged clinical course and white matter involvement which consisted of severe, widespread myelin damage in the forebrain and cerebellum but with sparing of the internal capsule. 1. The metabolism of dehydroretinyl ester has been studied in vitamin-A-deficient white leghorn chicks. Dehydroretinyl ester was metabolized to 3-hydroxyretinol diester, 3-hydroxyanhydroretinol and rehydrovitamin A2 which were isolated from the intestines and livers of chicks. 2. The metabolism of 3-hydroxyretinol diester and 3-hydroxyanhydroretinol, which were immediate metabolites of dehydroretinol, was studied in chicks. 3. Retinol was not detected in these experiments.

Histologic, histochemical and atomic absorption studies on liver tissue from 71 West Highland white terriers are reported. Twenty-seven dogs had histologically normal liver and copper concentration comparable to mongrel control dogs. Forty-four dogs had hepatic copper concentrations up to 22 times the mean copper concentration found in clinically normal mongrel dogs. Bilateral renal hypoplasia and/or agenesis was detected in 6 of 26 pure-bred Large White piglets in 2 consecutive litters. The affected piglets were all dead at birth. The defect was characterised by a variable nephrogenic zone beneath the renal capsule and by a greatly reduced number of glomeruli which were hypertrophied. The piglets were born to the same sow but they were sired by different boars. Both boars and the sow were related through their pedigree. A genetic basis for the defect, probably involving a recessive gene defect inherited in a simple Mendelian manner, seems likely.

Gross and microscopic lesions caused by Parelaphostrongylus andersoni were studied in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) infected with large (1000 or 5000) and moderate (200-356) numbers of third-stage larvae. A 25-year-old Finnish male had had brownish-black nodules along the shafts of his scrotal hair for a period of 1 1/2 years. From the clinical appearance, piedra was suspected.
