PURPOSE: To report the preliminary results of a novel full percutaneous interbody fusion technique for the treatment of degenerative disc disease (DDD) resistant to conservative treatment with posterior stabilization with rods and screws and transforaminal placement of an 8-mm-width intradiscal cage.

BACKGROUND: The H.E.L.P. (Heparin-induced extracorporal low-density lipoprotein precipitation) system selectively eliminates fibrinogen, LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, triglycerides, and LP (a) (lipoprotein a) from the blood plasma by means of extracorporal circulation. The reduction of these macromolecules immediately improves the hemorheological situation and leads to a significant decrease of plasma viscosity and red cell transmission time (RCTT), which correlates to the deformation of red blood cells. Seventy patients were exposed to local radiation (orthovolt X-ray therapy, generation voltage being 200 kV) for suppurative inflammation of the foot soft and bony tissues.
