In this study the optic nerve changes in zinc (Zn)-deficient rats are examined. Zinc is one of the essential trace elements and is known to be related to optic nerve diseases such as ethambutol neuropathy. Zinc deficiency in breast-fed infants is an important disorder. Unlike acrodermatitis enteropathica, it is transient and stops when nursing ends. We report two cases of premature infants, breast-fed only, who showed skin lesions resembling acrodermatitis enteropathica. Results of laboratory investigations revealed a lowered zinc level in the infants' serum and in the mothers' milk and a normal level of zinc in the mothers' serum. After the infants were given zinc supplements and their diets diversified, the skin lesions regressed and their serum zinc levels became normal.

NaCl thresholds and ability to discriminate between NaCl and sucrose were assessed in rats using an operant discrimination conditioning procedure before and during moderate and severe zinc deprivation and during zinc supplementation. Zinc deficiency in breast-fed infants is a rare disease caused by a low level of zinc in their mother's milk. Premature infants are more vulnerable to develop zinc deficiency than full-term infants because, despite their high zinc requirements, they have insufficient body stores of zinc and a poor capability to absorb zinc from the gut. The clinical aspect of zinc deficiency is acrodermatitis enteropathica, in which the severity is proportional to the zinc level. The patients respond well to oral zinc supplements.

During the fourth week of intravenous hyperalimentation (IVH) a vesiculopustular and erythematous eruption developed in the perioral and perineal areas of a 60-year-old woman. Treatment of acrodermatitis enteropathica with zinc sulfate, first described by Moynahan and Barnes in 1973, has been widely accepted. We have treated a case of acrodermatitis enteropathica successfully with this drug. The 14-year old boy had to discontinue clioquinol because of a partial opticus atrophy. The skin lesions deteriorated acutely. Following zinc sulfate treatment the lesions rapidly disappeared and the general health of the patient greatly improved.
