Huntington's disease (HD) causes progressive disability through motor, psychiatric, and cognitive symptoms. Machine learning speech analysis can detect motor and cognitive symptoms of HD, but not yet psychiatric symptoms. This study investigated whether speech analyses can detect the presence of psychiatric symptoms in HD. Audio recordings of six narrative tasks (cookie-theft picture description, red-riding hood storytelling, most recent 24 hours recalling, happy, sad, or angry storytelling) were prospectively collected from subsequent genetically confirmed HD participants from the BIOHD and R

BACKGROUND: When foreign bodies in the human body are not diagnosed (detected), it can cause various inflammatory reactions. Therefore, they should be detected and removed immediately. Taking a detailed patient history, performing a clinical examination, and selecting the appropriate imaging method are important for detection. The location, structure, and size of the foreign body affect the choice of radiography technique. This study aims to compare the detectability, measurement accuracy, and acoustic behaviors of various foreign bodies in the maxillofacial region using Cone Beam Computed Tom

Bilateral hand movements are assumed to be coordinated by a neural coupling mechanism. Neural coupling is experimentally reflected in complex electromyographic (EMG) responses in the forearm muscles of both sides to unilateral electrical arm nerve stimulation (ES). The aim of this study was to examine a potential involvement of the reticulospinal system in neural coupling by the application of loud acoustic stimuli (LAS) known to activate neurons of this system. LAS, ES and combined LAS/ES were applied to healthy subjects during visually guided bilateral hand flexion-extension movements. Muscl

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound beam aberration correction is vital when focusing ultrasound through the skull bone in transcranial magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (tcMRgFUS) applications. Current methods make transducer element phase adjustments to compensate for the variation in skull properties (shape, thickness, and acoustic properties), but do not account for variations in the internal brain anatomy.
PURPOSE: Our objective is to investigate the effect of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain anatomy on beam focusing in tcMRgFUS treatments.
METHODS: Simulations were conducted with imag

Several animal and human studies have now established the potential of low intensity, low frequency transcranial ultrasound (TUS) for non-invasive neuromodulation. Paradoxically, the underlying mechanisms through which TUS neuromodulation operates are still unclear, and a consensus on the identification of optimal sonication parameters still remains elusive. One emerging hypothesis based on thermodynamical considerations attributes the acoustic-induced nerve activity alterations to the mechanical energy and/or entropy conversions occurring during TUS action. Here, we propose a multiscale model

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Recent developments of low-cost, compact acoustic sensors, advanced signal processing tools and powerful computational resources allow researchers design new scoring systems for acoustic detection of arterial stenoses. In this study, numerical simulations of blood flow inside stenosed arteries are performed to understand the effect of stenosis severity and eccentricity on the turbulence induced wall pressure fluctuations and the generated sound.
METHODS: Axisymmetric and eccentric elliptic stenoses of five different severities are generated inside a 6.4 mm diameter

Purpose The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that stretch-and-flow voice therapy (SnF) is noninferior to resonant voice therapy (RVT) for speakers with muscle tension dysphonia. Method Participants with primary muscle tension dysphonia were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatment groups. Participants received 6 sessions of either SnF or RVT for 6 weeks (1 session per week). Pretreatment and posttreatment audio recordings of sustained vowels and connected speech were acquired. Response to treatment was assessed using the voice handicap index (VHI) as the primary outcome measure. Secon

The tympanic membrane (TM) is an exquisite structure that captures and transmits sound from the environment to the ossicular chain of the middle ear. The creation of TM grafts by multi-material three-dimensional (3D) printing may overcome limitations of current graft materials, e.g. temporalis muscle fascia, used for surgical reconstruction of the TM. TM graft scaffolds with either 8 or 16 circumferential and radial filament arrangements were fabricated by 3D printing of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), flex-polyactic acid (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL) materials followed by uniform infilling wi

BACKGROUND: Past reports on the speech production of individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) suggest that their prosody is anomalous and may lead to challenges in spoken communication. While existing prosodic assessments confirm that individuals with WS fail to use prosodic emphasis to express contrast, those reports typically lack detailed phonetic analysis of speech data. The present study examines the acoustic properties of speech prosody, aiming for the future development of targeted speech interventions.
AIMS: The study examines the three primary acoustic correlates of prosodic emphasis

OBJECTIVE: Despite high prevalence of otitis media in Aboriginal children, the acoustic-mechanical properties of their outer and middle ear during the neonatal period remain obscured. The objective of this study was to compare the acoustic-mechanical properties of outer and middle ear using Sweep Frequency Impedance (SFI) measures between Australian Aboriginal and Caucasian neonates.
METHODS: SFI data from 40 ears of 24 Aboriginal neonates (16 males, 8 females) with mean gestational age of 39.57 weeks (SD = 1.25) and 160 ears of 119 Caucasian neonates (57 males, 62 females) with mean gestatio

In developing neural prostheses, particular success has been realized with cochlear implants. These devices bypass damaged hair cells in the auditory system and electrically stimulate the auditory nerve directly. In contemporary cochlear implants, however, the injected electric current spreads widely along the scala tympani and across turns. Consequently, stimulation of spatially discrete spiral ganglion cell populations is difficult. In contrast to electrical stimulation, it has been shown that extremely spatially selective stimulation is possible using infrared radiation (e.g. [Izzo, A.D., S

Ultrasound contrast agents are now available since a few years and used for diagnostic purposes. Improved diagnostic decisions have been made possible with new imaging methods that are mainly based on the nonlinear properties of gas microbubbles. Since it is well known that contrast agents are destroyed by ultrasound when the acoustic pressure exceeds a threshold, extremely low acoustic pressures were applied to achieve enhanced contrast image quality. However, destruction of contrast microbubbles is not necessarily undesirable, since it is beneficial in, for example, destruction/reperfusion i

OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this study were: To determine the quantitative and qualitative changes that occur in transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) in older individuals without addressing the effect of aging alone and without correction for hearing loss of the subject selection. To investigate the clinical value of measuring TEOAEs in the routine audiological evaluation of older people reasoning that a finding of hearing loss in the presence of TEOAEs could indicate a form of presbycusis with a primary central component.
DESIGN: Click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (CEOAEs) were mea

To determine if there are racial differences in the prevalence of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs), both ears of 20 Negro, 20 Asian and 20 Caucasian subjects were examined for the presence of SOAEs. Within each racial group, equal numbers of normally hearing males and females were tested. Significant differences in the occurrence of SOAEs were found between the three racial groups, with Negroes expressing more SOAEs than Caucasians, and Asians demonstrating an intermediate number of these emissions. In support of previous observations, more emissions were recorded from female than fro

Removal of vestibular schwannomas (VSs, or acoustic neuromas) remains one of the most challenging operations in neurosurgery. Giant or huge tumors (> 5 cm) heighten these challenges, and technical nuances play a special role in maximizing tumor resection while minimizing complications. In this article, the senior author describes his technical experience with microsurgical excision of giant VSs. The accompanying video further illustrates these details.

We report a case of hepatobiliary fascioliasis presenting with unusual radiological findings that have not been reported previously. Imaging studies revealed hepatic cystic pouches communicating with intrahepatic bile ducts. Snail-like, oval shaped and conglomerated echogenic particles with no acoustic shadowing, suggesting F. hepatica, were detected in these cystic pouches. In addition, secondary sclerosing cholangitis developed after fascioliasis.

This article describes modal analysis of acoustic waves in the human vocal tract while the subject is pronouncing [o]. The model used is the wave equation in three dimensions, together with physically relevant boundary conditions. The geometry is reconstructed from anatomical MRI data obtained by other researchers. The computations are carried out using the finite element method. The model is validated by comparing the computed modes with measured data.
