PURPOSE: Respiratory motion during liver radiotherapy introduces geometric uncertainty in tumor targeting, which can lead to underdosing of the tumor and overdosing of adjacent healthy tissues. While adaptive radiotherapy offers a potential solution, its performance requires rigorous validation using physiologically realistic phantoms. This study developed a dynamic liver phantom that simulates respiratory-induced liver motion and deformation to serve as a platform for testing adaptive radiotherapy algorithm and clinical radiotherapy systems.
METHODS: Using patient imaging data, digital model

Mammalian reproduction requires substantial immune adaptations to safeguard reproductive success and to ultimately shape the evolutionary trajectories of a species. Systemic and placental immunity shift towards tolerance during pregnancy1,2; however, how maternal immunity adapts in barrier tissues-which are sites of frequent infection and inflammation-from pregnancy until the postpartum lactation period remains poorly understood. Here we report a previously unrecognized role for eosinophils, a type of granulocyte typically associated with allergies and helminth infections3,4, in remodelling th

BACKGROUND: Hepatectomy triggers complex metabolic changes as the liver adapts to the loss of functional mass and initiates regeneration. These changes impact carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism, as well as energy and oxygen dynamics. A deeper understanding of these shifts is essential for improving perioperative management and enhancing long-term outcomes.
AIM: To review and synthesise the current understanding of metabolic changes following hepatectomy and explore their implications for perioperative care, postoperative recovery, and long-term patient outcomes.
METHODS: A narrative

The flexibility of digestive tract morphology and the composition of gut microbiota play crucial roles in the environmental adaptation of reptiles. To evaluate the contributions of the dietary niches to the gut microbiota, we performed 16S rDNA sequencing and metabolite profiling for three sympatric lizard species-Teratoscincus roborowskii, Phrynocephalus axillaris, and Eremias roborowskii-and compared their goblet cell and enzyme activities of the digestive tract. The results revealed that goblet cell densities in the stomach body and pylorus were significantly higher in both T. roborowskii a

The circadian clock system coordinates metabolic, physiological, and behavioral functions across a 24-h cycle, crucial for adapting to environmental changes. Disruptions in circadian rhythms contribute to major metabolic pathologies like obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Understanding the regulatory mechanisms governing circadian control is vital for identifying therapeutic targets. It is well characterized that chromatin remodeling and 3D structure at genome regulatory elements contributes to circadian transcriptional cycles; yet the impact of rhythmic chromatin topology in metabolic disease is la

Kidneys have an amazing ability to adapt to adverse situations, both acute and chronic. In the presence of injury, the kidney is able to activate mechanisms such as autoregulation or glomerular hyperfiltration to maintain the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). While these adaptive mechanisms can occur in physiological situations such as pregnancy or high protein intake, they can also occur as an early manifestation of diseases such as diabetes mellitus or as an adaptive response to nephron loss. Although over-activation of these mechanisms can lead to intraglomerular hypertension and albuminuri

Frailty is a clinical presentation resulting from age-related cumulative declines in several physiological systems. The aim of this study was to adapt the concept of frailty to the domestic dog, as a model for frailty research, by characterizing a 5-criterion frailty phenotype using objective measurement, and to investigate its independent association with death. A prospective cohort including 80 Labrador and Golden Retriever dogs aged 9 years or older was conducted between March 2015 and July 2020. An adapted frailty phenotype was defined according to the presence of 5 criteria (weakness, slo

Bladder cells are constantly exposed to multiple xenobiotics and bioactive metabolites. In addition to this challenging chemical environment, they are also exposed to shear stress originating from urine and interstitial fluids. Hence, physiological function of bladder cells relies on a high biochemical and biomechanical adaptive competence, which, in turn, is largely supported via autophagy-related mechanisms. As a negative side of this plasticity, bladder cancer cells are known to adapt readily to chemotherapeutic programs. At the molecular level, autophagy was described to support resistance

Cardiac adaptations to exercise on an elite level have been well studied. Strain analysis by speckle tracking echocardiography has emerged as a tool for sports cardiologists to assess the nature of hypertrophy in athletes' hearts. In prior studies, strain values generally did not change in physiological adaptations to exercise but were reduced in pathological hypertrophy. However, research in this field has focused almost solely on male athletes. Purpose of the present study is to investigate strain values in the hearts of female elite athletes in football and volleyball. In this cross-section

Tuberculosis (TB) claims more human lives than any other infectious organism. The lethal synergy between TB-HIV infection and the rapid emergence of drug resistant strains has created a global public health threat that requires urgent attention. Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of TB is an exquisitely well-adapted human pathogen, displaying the ability to promptly remodel metabolism when encountering stressful environments during pathogenesis. A careful study of the mechanisms that enable this adaptation will enhance the understanding of key aspects related to the microbiology o

The design of cell-based therapies for vocal fold tissue engineering requires an understanding of how cells adapt to the dynamic mechanical forces found in the larynx. Our objective was to compare mechanotransductive processes in therapeutic cell candidates (mesenchymal stromal cells from adipose tissue and bone marrow, AT-MSC and BM-MSC) to native cells (vocal fold fibroblasts-VFF) in the context of vibratory strain. A bioreactor was used to expose VFF, AT-MSC, and BM-MSC to axial tensile strain and vibration at human physiological levels. Microarray, an empirical Bayes statistical approach,

The study investigated the speech adaptations by older adults (OA) with and without age-related hearing loss made to communicate effectively in challenging communicative conditions. Acoustic analyses were carried out on spontaneous speech produced during a problem-solving task (diapix) carried out by talker pairs in different listening conditions. There were 83 talkers of Southern British English. Fifty-seven talkers were OAs aged 65-84, 30 older adults with normal hearing (OANH), and 27 older adults with hearing loss (OAHL) [mean pure tone average (PTA) 0.250-4 kHz: 27.7 dB HL]. Twenty-six ta

Incomitance is a condition with gaze-dependent deviations of ocular alignment and is common in strabismus patients. The physiological mechanisms that maintain equal horizontal ocular alignment in all gaze directions (concomitance) in healthy individuals are poorly explored. We investigate adaptive processes in the vergence system that are induced by horizontal incomitant vergence stimuli (stimuli that require a gaze-dependent vergence response in order to re-establish binocular single vision). We measured horizontal vergence responses elicited after healthy subjects shifted their gaze from a p

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is the most common cause of intestinal failure in children. It is defined as the inability to maintain adequate nutrition enterally as a result of a major loss of the small intestine. SBS is a life-threatening entity associated with potential significant morbidity and mortality. The etiology in the pediatric age group includes necrotizing enterocolitis (32%), atresia (20%), volvulus (18%), gastroschisis (17%), and aganglionosis (6%). It is characterized by substrate malabsorption, electrolyte imbalance, intestinal bacterial overgrowth, steatorrhea, and weight loss. C

A multitude of different virulence factors as well as the ability to rapidly adapt to adverse environmental conditions are important features for the high pathogenicity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Both virulence and adaptive resistance are tightly controlled by a complex regulatory network and respond to external stimuli, such as host signals or antibiotic stress, in a highly specific manner. Here, we demonstrate that physiological concentrations of the human host defense peptide LL-37 promote virulence factor production as well as an adaptive resistance against fluoroquinolone and aminoglycosi

To obtain a better understanding of the adaptations of human tendon to chronic overloading, we examined the relationships between these adaptations and the changes in muscle structure and function. Fifteen healthy male subjects (20+/-2 yr) underwent 9 wk of knee extension resistance training. Patellar tendon stiffness and modulus were assessed with ultrasonography, and cross-sectional area (CSA) was determined along the entire length of the tendon by using magnetic resonance imaging. In the quadriceps muscles, architecture and volume measurements were combined to obtain physiological CSA (PCSA

All animals, including humans, are adapted to life in a microbial world. Anaerobic habitats have existed continuously throughout the history of the earth, the gastrointestinal tract being a contemporary microniche. Since microorganisms colonize and grow rapidly under the favorable conditions in the gut they could compete for nutrients with the host. This microbial challenge has modified the course of evolution in animals, resulting in selection of complex animal-microbe relationships that vary tremendously, ranging from competition to cooperation. The ecological and evolutionary interactions b

The harsh conditions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau pose significant physiological challenges to local fauna, often resulting in gastrointestinal disorders. However, Tibetan pigs have exhibited remarkable adaptability to the high-altitude stress of the Tibetan Plateau, a phenomenon that remains not fully understood in terms of their gastrointestinal microbiota. This study collected 57 gastrointestinal tract samples from Tibetan pigs (n = 6) and plain black pigs (n = 6) with comparable genetic backgrounds. Samples from the stomach, jejunum, cecum, colon, and rectum, underwent comprehensive metage

The high mortality rate of suckling piglets in commercial farms is a cause for concern and requires the adoption of innovative breeding and management approaches for effective mitigation. Piglets are particularly vulnerable during the first days of life, which concerns especially neonates with a low birth weight. In this study, neonatal adaptation was analysed regarding genotype and housing conditions following hormonally induced farrowing. A total of 96 piglets from 27 farrowings of German Landrace (GL; birth induction at day 115 of gestation) and German Saddleback sows (GS; birth induction a
