PURPOSE: Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) has been reported to be associated with patients receiving bisphosphonate (BP) therapy. There are many reports that suggest that the time of exposure to BPs is a significant risk factor for ONJ and that the greatest risk occurs after dentoalveolar surgery. The aim of this study was to retrospectively investigate the duration of BP therapy and related events before the onset of ONJ based on an intravenous (IV) or oral route of administration.

BACKGROUND: Once-yearly zoledronic acid has been proven effective in the management of osteoporosis. Osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ) related to its use has not been reported since its approval in 2007.

The data on paraendocervical administration of metronidazole in the treatment of patients with relapsing Trichomonas endocervicitis are presented. Metronidazole was administered as 0.5% solution in a dose of 0.04 g once a day for 8-10 days in complex traditional therapy including oral use of metronidazole and immunocorrigating and local treatment. It was shown that paraendocervical administration of the protistocidal agent provided earlier regression of the urogenital symptoms and 2.8 times lower frequency of the relapses.

Mycobacterium fortuitum is a rare cause of central nervous system infection; however, shunt infection caused by this organism has not been reported. We report a case of shunt infection subsequent to insertion of a ventriculoatrial shunt for obstructive hydrocephalus caused by a cerebellar hematoma. The shunt infection was controlled by removal of the shunt and a combination of systemic and intraventricular administration of amikacin, and oral administration of ofloxacin. The case is discussed and the pertinent literature reviewed.

The pharmacokinetics of oral theophylline (250 mg) and the production of its metabolites (3-methylxanthine, 1-methyluric acid, 1,3-dimethyluric acid) were studied before and after the administration of oral terfenadine (120 mg twice daily for 16 days) in 10 healthy volunteers. Comparison of volumes of distribution, elimination half-lives, areas under the plasma concentration-time curves, plasma clearance of theophylline and elimination of theophylline metabolites indicated that terfenadine had no significant effect on theophylline pharmacokinetics and metabolism.
