Genomic Anatomy of Homozygous XX Females and YY Males Reveals Early Evolutionary Trajectory of Sex-determining Gene and Sex Chromosomes in Silurus Fishes.

Sex chromosomes display remarkable diversity and variability among vertebrates. Compared with research on the X/Y and Z/W chromosomes, which have long evolutionary histories in mammals and birds, studies on the sex chromosomes at early evolutionary stages are limited. Here, we precisely assembled the genomes of homozygous XX female and YY male Lanzhou catfish (Silurus lanzhouensis) derived from an artificial gynogenetic family and a self-fertilized family, respectively. Chromosome 24 (Chr24) was identified as the sex chromosome based on resequencing data. Comparative analysis of the X and Y ch

Vaginal cancer: Why should we care? Anatomy, staging and in-depth imaging-based review of vaginal malignancies focusing on MRI and PET/CT.

Vaginal cancer often poses a challenge for clinical and radiological diagnosis, and its risk factors, progression, and treatment are still p … . Some vaginal neoplasms have characteristic MRI patterns, which, combined with expert knowledge of anatomy, allow identification of local macroscopic details (such as the mucosal, submucosal, and muscle layers). Furthermore, the application of PET/CT, already well established for identifying systemic disease, has a large impact on patient prognosis. The …

One academic year laboratory and student breathing zone formaldehyde level, measured by gas-piston hand pump at gross anatomy laboratory, Siriraj Hospital, Thailand.

This study used a formaldehyde detector tube with a gas-piston hand pump to assess ceiling levels of student breathing zone and gross laboratory environment across the 2018 academic year. The room dimension was 28.6 × 55.48 × 5.5 m. It contained 90 cadavers, each placed on a hinged cover table. We measured before and during nine body region dissections. There was a significant difference (p < 0.01) between student exposure and laboratory environment levels. The highest level was student exposure during body wall dissection (2.7 ppm), the first laboratory; students may accidentally enter body c

A rare coronary anatomy comprising dual (Type IV) left anterior descending arteries and an anomalous left circumflex artery from the right coronary artery.

We present the case of a rare coronary anomaly in a 64-year-old male who presented with exertional angina. The right coronary artery (RCA) was dominant, giving origin proximally to an anomalous left circumflex (LCX) artery and a left anterior descending (LAD) artery which supplied the conventional mid and distal LAD territory. The left main artery (LM) arose from the left coronary sinus and branched into a large first septal and an intermediate artery. There was associated non-critical atherosclerotic disease. We report this because of the rare division of the LAD area of supply by arteries fr

Positive and Negative Retrograde Computed Tomographic Vaginography Studies Offer Similar Visibility of the Anatomy of the Lower Urogenital Tract in Female Dogs with Urogenital Signs.

Computed tomography is commonly used to investigate pathologies of the lower urogenital tract in female dogs. Even though a positive contrast medium is commonly used, negative contrast has proven to be a valuable tool in the assessment of urinary pathologies. This study aims to compare the use of negative with positive retrograde CT vaginography in the assessment of the lower urogenital tract in female dogs. This retrospective method comparison study gathered 30 cases retrieved from the database of three referral hospitals and equally divided them into two groups: positive CT vaginography grou

Descriptive Histology and Anatomy of the Nasal Cavity and Its Associated Sensory Organs in the European Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) Based on Four Standardised Transverse Sections.

The nasal cavity of European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) harbours a well-developed olfactory system, essential for food provision and communication. Additionally, it acts as a first line of defence by preventing pathogens and irritants from reaching the lungs, thereby playing an important physiological role. This study describes the histo-anatomical features of the nasal cavity in the species. Hedgehogs have simple nasoturbinates and complex branching maxilloturbinates lined by respiratory epithelium. The caudal nasal cavity contains large lateral nasal glands and abundant olfactory epithe
