Affect Phobia Group Therapy for Patients With Substance Use Disorders and Comorbid ADHD.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility and analyze preliminary data of the effectiveness of affect phobia therapy (APT) adapted to a structured group format. APT is a treatment that targets emotional avoidance and deficiency in emotion regulation that often leads to psychological dysfunction. The target group was patients with comorbid substance use disorder (SUD) and ADHD with core features of affect phobia/emotion dysregulation. Patients in three group treatments with the aim of having eight participants in each group (n = 22) were included in an open design, where targ

Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Psychiatric Traits and Diagnoses within a Community-based Sample of Children and Youth: Disparités raciales/ethniques dans les traits et diagnostics psychiatriques au sein d'un échantillon communautaire d'enfants et de jeunes.

OBJECTIVE: Racial/ethnic disparities in the prevalence of psychiatric disorders have been reported, but have not accounted for the prevalence of the traits that underlie these disorders. Examining rates of diagnoses in relation to traits may yield a clearer understanding of the degree to which racial/ethnic minority youth in Canada differ in their access to care. We sought to examine differences in self/parent-reported rates of diagnoses for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety disorders after adjusting for differences in trait levels

Sleep patterns and problems among early adolescents: Associations with alcohol use.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep and sleep-related problems are associated with alcohol use and related problems among adults. However, existing research on associations between sleep and alcohol use among early adolescents is minimal, and potential individual and family factors that may affect this association remain largely unexplored. We examined potential associations between frequency of alcohol use and initial insomnia, subjective daytime sleepiness, sleep irregularity, and disturbed sleep among a low-income, ethnic minority sample of early adolescents; we also considered whether psychopathology symp

A Methodology of Analysis for Monitoring Treatment Progression with 19-Channel Z-Score Neurofeedback (19ZNF) in a Single-Subject Design.

19-Channel Z-Score Neurofeedback (19ZNF) is a modality using 19-electrodes with real-time normative database z-scores, suggesting effective clinical outcomes in fewer sessions than traditional neurofeedback. Thus, monitoring treatment progression and clinical outcome is necessary. The area of focus in this study was a methodology of quantitative analysis for monitoring treatment progression and clinical outcome with 19ZNF. This methodology is noted as the Sites-of-Interest, which included repeated measures analyses of variance (rANOVA) and t-tests for z-scores; it was conducted on 10 cases in

Differentiating neural reward responsiveness in autism versus ADHD.

Although attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) share certain neurocognitive characteristics, it has been hypothesized to differentiate the two disorders based on their brain's reward responsiveness to either social or monetary reward. Thus, the present fMRI study investigated neural activation in response to both reward types in age and IQ-matched boys with ADHD versus ASD relative to typically controls (TDC). A significant group by reward type interaction effect emerged in the ventral striatum with greater activation to monetary versus social rew

Specific language impairment: a convenient label for whom?

BACKGROUND: The term 'specific language impairment' (SLI), in use since the 1980s, describes children with language impairment whose cognitive skills are within normal limits where there is no identifiable reason for the language impairment. SLI is determined by applying exclusionary criteria, so that it is defined by what it is not rather than by what it is. The recent decision to not include SLI in DSM-5 provoked much debate and concern from researchers and clinicians. AIMS: To explore how the term 'specific language impairment' emerged, to consider how disorders, including SLI, are general

Trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder among transition-age youth with serious mental health conditions.

There is little information on trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and associated risk factors in transition-age youth with mental health conditions. This study aimed at understanding the correlates and predictors of PTSD in 84 transition-age youth, between 16 and 21 years old, residing in supported community housing. Chi-square analyses and t tests were used to compare youth with a diagnosis of PTSD to those without a PTSD diagnosis. Stepwise logistic regression analyses were performed to identify unique predictors of PTSD. Of the 84 individuals, 79 (94%) reported a history of traum

Drug induced mania in a boy with high functioning autism.

Drug induced mania is sometimes associated with drug that are primarily not used for central nervous system effects. Here we report a manic episode during the treatment of leukemia with various agents in an adolescent with diagnosis of high functioning autism. In this case, most likely candidates to induce a manic episode were dexamethazone, a corticosteroid used in the treatment of T-ALL, cyclophosphamide and cotrimoxazole. Although literature on mood disorders associated with corticosteroids exceeds that of cyclophosphamide and cotrimoxazole, an absolute causal drug cannot be stated.

[Modafinil in psychiatric disorders: the promising state reconsidered].

BACKGROUND: For more than two decades psychiatrists have known about and have promoted modafinil, a very promising stimulant that boosts wakefulness in cases of narcolepsy and also enhances cognitive functions. At present, however, we must conclude that modafinil is hardly ever used to treat illness other than narcolepsy. AIM: To review current attitudes and practice with regard to the use and efficacy of modafinil in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. METHOD: Relevant placebo-controlled studies were retrieved via PubMed (Medline) and Web of Science. RESULTS: Modafinil is used experime

Performance variability, impulsivity errors and the impact of incentives as gender-independent endophenotypes for ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common and highly heritable child psychiatric disorders. There is strong evidence that children with ADHD show slower and more variable responses in tasks such as Go/Nogo tapping aspects of executive functions like sustained attention and response control which may be modulated by motivational factors and/or state-regulation processes. The aim of this study was (1) to determine if these executive functions may constitute an endophenotype for ADHD; (2) to investigate for the first time whether known modulators of the

Inattentive/overactive children with histories of profound institutional deprivation compared with standard ADHD cases: a brief report.

BACKGROUND: The Inattention/Overactivity/Impulsiveness (I/OA) behavioural cluster diagnostic of ADHD is recognized as a characteristic outcome of early institutional care. METHODS: We compared the symptom and neuropsychological profiles of children with a history of I/OA and early severe deprivation (D-I/OA: n=13) with standard clinical ADHD cases (S-ADHD; N=20) and children who had experienced deprivation but were not pervasively I/OA (ERA-controls; n=22). The mean age of testing was around 13 years. D-I/OA and ERA-controls were selected from the English and Romanian Adoptees (ERA) study and

Autism spectrum disorder and Klinefelter syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Autism is a severe handicapping disorder of early childhood characterized by a distinct pattern of social and communication impairment with rigid ritualistic interests. In about 10-25% of cases, it is associated with known medical conditions. Population-based studies of autism have found that Klinefelter's syndrome (KS), a common chromosome abnormality, is sometimes associated with autism. However, few detailed case descriptions of patients with KS and autism have not been published. CASE REPORT: In this paper, we describe the occurrence of autistic features in two cases of Klinef

Behavioral dysfunction and cognitive efficiency in male and female alcoholics.

This study was conducted to examine the role of childhood behavioral disorders (CBDs) and residual attention deficit disorder (ADDRT) in alcohol-related cognitive dysfunction in male and female subjects. Alcoholic (n = 44 females, 56 males) and control (n = 40 females, 40 males) subjects completed assessments that included measures of CBDs, ADDRT, and cognitive and psychosocial functioning. Cognitive tests were specifically designed to assess efficiency in function. As expected, alcoholics were inferior to controls in their cognitive efficiency [F(1,171) = 10.43, p = 0.0015]. [Developmental disorders in the fourth edition of the American classification: diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM IV -- optional book)].

In 1991 the American Psychiatric Association proposed a draft version of the IV edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders--the DSM IV Options Book. Authors of this version wanted to increase clarity of the criteria sets and to provide compatibility with the Tenth Edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD - 10). The purpose of this Options Book is to propose some changes in wording, diagnostic divisions and to discuss various options concerning the placement of sections and disorders within the classification. The "Disorders of Infancy, Childhood or

Children with preschool minor neurodevelopmental disorders. IV: Behaviour and school achievement at age 13.

A cohort of children with deficits in attention, motor control and perception at seven years, drawn from a total population sample of such children in Göteborg, Sweden, was compared at 13 years with a group of normal children with regard to behaviour and school achievement. The index group showed persisting high rates of severe behavioural problems, as judged by teachers', parents' and self-rating questionnaires. None had been treated with stimulants or other drugs to reduce the symptoms of their neurodevelopmental disorders. It seems that these children's problems were slightly less in the ea

[Value of "suture bones" in the diagnosis of minor brain damage in early childhood].

In a sample of 278 children with normal intelligence and behaviour disorders the x-rays of the craniums were analysed especially on the aspect of suture bones. They were related to the clinical total diagnosis "Minimal Brain Damage". Statistically significant relations between the appearance of suture-bones and other cranium anomalies as well as between clinical total diagnosis "MBD" were to be found. So the results by D. Müller on the clinical value of suture-bones are supported.

Prevention by specific perceptual remediation for vulnerable first-graders. Controlled study and follow-up of lasting effects.

In a pretest-posttest design with two matched control groups, 86 first-graders screened as vulnerable to academic failure and behavioral decompensation were each assigned to one of three groups: (1) channel-specific perceptual stimulation, (2) regular academic tutoring (contact controls), or (3) no contact. On most measures, including perceptual and achievement tests and behavior ratings by teachers, group 1 showed more improvement than either of the control groups. Several of these differences were significant (P less than .05, two-tailed). In general, the two control groups came closer to ea

Is auditory perceptual timing a core deficit of developmental coordination disorder?

Time is an essential dimension for perceiving and processing auditory events, and for planning and producing motor behaviors. Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting 5-6% of children that is characterized by deficits in motor skills. Studies show that children with DCD have motor timing and sensorimotor timing deficits. We suggest that auditory perceptual timing deficits may also be core characteristics of DCD. This idea is consistent with evidence from several domains, (1) motor-related brain regions are often involved in auditory timing process; (
