Monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (MBL) is an asymptomatic haematological condition characterized by low absolute levels of B-cell clones with a surface immunophenotype similar to that of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). Recent studies on normal and malignant B-cells have provided evidence that the germinal center (GC) of lymphoid follicles exerts a role in B-cell physiology and malignancy. Ten chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients were treated with partially pure alpha interferon (IFN-alpha) at doses ranging from 3-9 X 10(6) units administered intramuscularly daily. Hotspot mutation of IKZF3 (IKZF3-L162R) has been identified as a putative driver of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), but its function remains unknown. In this article for the Highlights of 2023 Series, we discuss four recent articles that investigated thymic B cells, in both mice and humans. These studies provide important novel insights into the biology of this unique B-cell population, from their activation and differentiation to their role in promoting the negative selection of thymocytes and the generation of regulatory T cells.

The lymphocyte subpopulations in peripheral blood and blast transformation were studied on days 0, 3, 7, 11, 15, 20 and 35 after infection in progesterone-treated guinea-pigs which had been experimentally infected with Entamoeba histolytica by intracaecal inoculation.
