The Associations Between Daily Activities and Affect: a Compositional Isotemporal Substitution Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Daily activities are associated with affective experiences. A 24-h day can be separated into five mutually exclusive activity types: sleep, awake in bed, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), light-intensity physical activity (LIPA), and sedentary behavior (SB). Most research has examined these activities independently and not collectively, yet increased time in one activity must be offset by decreasing other activities. Using compositional isotemporal substitution analyses, this study examined the associations between time spent in daily activities and affect, including b

Childhood Mistreatment, PTSD, and Substance Use in Latinx: The Role of Discrimination in an Omitted-Variable Bias.

BACKGROUND: Childhood mistreatment (CM) has been associated with adult posttraumatic disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUDs) in the general population. Few studies have examined the role of PTSD in the CM-SUD association among Latinx. This cross-sectional study evaluated a theory-driven conceptual model with a specific focus on the impact of perceived discrimination, which may interfere with these associations. METHOD: Using a nationally representative sample and structural equation modeling (SEM), the study evaluated the mediation of PTSD in the CM-SUD link, adjusting for or omitt

Social Support Associated with Condom Use Behavior Among Female Sex Workers in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Despite the widespread knowledge about social support and health, there is little information about the association between social support and HIV risk behaviors such as condom use among female sex workers (FSWs) in Iran. This study aimed to determine the association between social support and frequency of condom use among FSWs in Tehran, Iran. METHODS: Using mixed sampling methods, we recruited 170 FSWs in Tehran in 2017. We measured self-reported social support by face-to-face interviews using a standardized questionnaire. Linear regression was used to assess the association bet

Intersecting Barriers to PrEP Awareness and Uptake in Black Men Who Have Sex with Men in Atlanta, GA: a Syndemic Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can sharply reduce HIV transmission risk, yet has not been widely adopted among those at highest risk for HIV, including Black men who have sex with men (BMSM). To better understand the evolving landscape of PrEP uptake in this at-risk population, we sought to examine psychosocial factors associated with PrEP uptake in a sample of BMSM residing in the Atlanta, GA, area. METHOD: BMSM were recruited through online social media, LGBT venues, and participant referral, and self-reported demographic and psychosocial information via computer-assisted self-

The Moderating Effect of Resilience on the Relationship between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Quality of Physical and Mental Health among Adult Sexual and Gender Minorities.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals experience a greater burden of poor mental health compared to heterosexual individuals. One factor that helps to explain this disparity is trauma experienced during childhood. SGM are more likely to report traumatic experiences during childhood contributing to this disparity. Previous research has shown that resilience moderates the relationship between childhood trauma and adults mental health outcomes. As part of the Strengthening Colors of Pride project, data on 463 SGM adults living in San Antonio were collected using surveys. A diverse recruitm

Opioid Misuse among Smokers with Chronic Pain: Relations with Substance Use and Mental Health.

Opioid misuse is a significant public health concern with substantial medical, social, and economic costs. Cross cutting the personal and societal effects of this current crisis, opioid misuse is associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes that impair function across numerous life domains. Importantly, opioid misuse disproportionately affects persons with chronic pain and individuals who smoke tobacco. Despite the higher risk for smokers with chronic pain to engage in opioid misuse, little work has examined how opioid misuse may be related to mental health problems, including ot

Sexual Orientation, Tobacco Use, and Tobacco Cessation Treatment-Seeking: Results From a National U.S. Survey.

Despite higher rates of tobacco use and smoking-related diseases among sexual minorities, tobacco cessation treatment-seeking behaviors (e.g., medication, nicotine replacement products) remain poorly understood across sexual orientation subgroups. This study examines tobacco cessation treatment-seeking behaviors associated with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition tobacco use disorder (TUD) across the three major sexual orientation dimensions (identity, attraction, behavior) in U.S. adults. Prevalence estimates reflect data collected from a 2012-2013 national samp

Positive Affect Moderates the Relationship Between Salivary Testosterone and a Health Behavior Composite in University Females.

BACKGROUND: Testosterone is released in both men and women and plays an important role in social functioning and motivation. Greater testosterone in women has been associated with negative physical health outcomes, while lower testosterone has been associated with psychological disorders. The following cross-sectional study examined the contribution of salivary testosterone, positive and negative affect, and demographic variables in predicting a composite health behavior score (cigarette use, hours of sleep, fruit/vegetable intake, following an exercise routine). METHOD: The sample (mean age

Prenatal Tobacco and Cannabis Exposure: Associations with Cortisol Reactivity in Early School Age Children.

BACKGROUND: The study examined the association between prenatal tobacco or co-exposure to tobacco and cannabis and children's cortisol reactivity at kindergarten age and the role of child sex, maternal negative mood (depression/perceived stress), and parenting behavior during play interactions as moderators of this association. METHODS: The sample was 238 mother-child dyads (67 tobacco users, 83 co-users of tobacco and cannabis, and 88 non-users). Data used were obtained from pregnancy assessments and six postnatal assessments at 2, 9, 16, 24, and 36 months and kindergarten age. Infant cortis

Students Living in the Islands are Heavier and have Lower Fitness Levels Compared to their Mainland Counterparts; Results from the National Action for Children's Health (EYZHN) Program.

Few studies have examined variations in obesity by geographic location in youth and its relation with fitness levels. The present study investigated the association between geographic status (islands versus mainland), excess of body weight and fitness levels among 335.810 schoolchildren (male: 51.3%, 6-18 y, during the school year 2014-2015). Students' anthropometric parameters and fitness levels - accessed via the Euro-fit test - were measured by trained physical education teachers and evaluated according to published norms. Prevalence of overweight (23.0 Vs 21.8%) and obese (10.1 Vs 8.0%) wa

Anxiety Sensitivity and Physical Inactivity in a National Sample of Adults with a History of Myocardial Infarction.

BACKGROUND: The psychological factors underlying physical inactivity in vulnerable cardiac adult populations remain understudied. Anxiety sensitivity, a cognitive vulnerability defined as fear of the physical, cognitive, and social consequences of anxiety, may be an important modifiable determinant of physical inactivity. We examined the association of anxiety sensitivity, and each anxiety sensitivity subscale (physical, cognitive, and social concerns), with physical inactivity in adults with a history of myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: Using cross-sectional data from a nationally repres

Psychological contribution to understanding the nature of dry eye disease: a cross-sectional study of anxiety sensitivity and dry eyes.

Dry eye disease (DED) represents a common health problem in the general population. Previous studies have demonstrated that the subjective symptoms of dry eye are associated with several psychological factors, including depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. However, there is a lack of empirical information about the mechanisms underlying the relationships between DED and various psychological symptoms. In light of emerging evidence of its trans-diagnostic nature, anxiety sensitivity (i.e. AS) represents one promising factor for further understanding DED. The present study aim

Why? What? How? Using an Intervention Mapping approach to develop a personalised intervention to improve adherence to photoprotection in patients with Xeroderma Pigmentosum.

Background: Intervention Mapping (IM) is a systematic approach for developing theory-based interventions across a variety of contexts and settings. This paper describes the development of a complex intervention designed to reduce the dose of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) reaching the face of adults with Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP), by improving photoprotection. XP is a genetic condition that without extreme UVR photoprotection, leads to high risk of developing skin cancer. Methods: The IM protocol of 6 steps was applied, involving comprehensive mixed-methods formative research. Key stakeholders (

Improving photoprotection in adults with xeroderma pigmentosum: personalisation and tailoring in the 'XPAND' intervention.

BACKGROUND: Individualised behaviour change interventions can result in greater effects than one-size-fits-all approaches. Factors linked to success include dynamic (vs. static) tailoring, and tailoring on behaviour, multiple theoretical variables, and participant characteristics. XP is a very rare (∼100 UK patients) genetic disease, involving an inability to repair ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-induced damage, resulting in skin cancers and eye damage from an early age, and mean life expectancy of 32-years. Management involves rigorous UVR photoprotection, which is often inadequate, and no inter

Examining a Syndemics Network Among Young Latino Men Who Have Sex with Men.

BACKGROUND: Although studies consistently find that syndemic indicators are additively associated with increased HIV/STI risk behavior (e.g., condomless anal sex; CAS) among men who have sex with men (MSM), information is lacking about how syndemic indicators are associated with each other. Young Latino MSM are one of the most at-risk groups for acquiring HIV in the U.S. Understanding the associations of syndemic indicators with each other and with CAS may improve understanding of how to enhance sexual and behavioral health in this population. METHOD: Network analysis using the graphical LASS

Beyond Their HIV Status: the Occurrence of Multiple Health Risk Behavior Among Adolescents from a Rural Setting of Sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Health risk behaviors during adolescence may cluster into patterns that might be predicted by specific factors, among which HIV may have an important role. METHOD: In a cross-sectional study conducted between 2017 and 2018, clustering of HRB and its associated factors was investigated in rural Kenya among 588 adolescents (36% perinatally HIV infected; 28% perinatally HIV exposed but uninfected; and 36% HIV unexposed/uninfected). Latent class analysis of 22 behaviors followed by multinomial logistic regression were conducted. Four risk behavior classes were identified. RESULTS: No

Sleep Quality and Inflammation in Married Heterosexual Couples: an Actor-Partner Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Subjective sleep quality is a predictor of important health outcomes, but little work has examined the social context of sleep that might inform theoretical models and intervention approaches. The present study tested actor-partner models of sleep quality and its links to inflammatory markers. METHOD: Participants were 84 middle-age to older adult heterosexual married couples who completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and had blood drawn for determination of CRP and IL-6 levels. RESULTS: Main results indicated that only actor levels of poor global sleep quality predicted hi

Gender differences in factors associated with symptoms of depression among high school students: an examination of the direct and indirect effects of insomnia symptoms and physical activity.

OBJECTIVE: Scant research exists on the gender-specific association between physical activity, insomnia symptoms and depressive symptoms among adolescents. The present study investigates the direct and indirect association of insomnia and physical activity with symptoms of depression. DESIGN: In a community-based sample (N = 1485) we investigated factors associated with symptoms of depression focusing on insomnia. The study also included measures of physical activity and controlled for parental work- and sexual minority status. Body mass Index (BMI) was calculated for a sub-sample (n = 617) r

Coding Client Language in Motivational Interviewing for HIV Medication Adherence Using Self-Determination Theory.

BACKGROUND: Both motivational interviewing (MI) and self-determination theory (SDT) emphasise the importance of an individual's autonomy. SDT proposes that motivation is on a continuum with autonomous motivation (AM) at the self-determined end of the spectrum. Whether client speech reflects AM is not coded in MI process studies, however, as it is subsumed under the broader category of change talk (CT). We aimed to code naturalistic speech within MI sessions for HIV medication (antiretroviral) adherence according to whether expressed motivation was autonomous or controlled. We then assessed rel
