The determination of the bleeding time (BT) is an essential diagnostic tool for von Willebrand's disease (vWD). However, the standardized Simplate BT still displays many variables and disadvantages. The effects of hypertonic saline solution (HTSS) combined with colloids on hemostatic analytes were studied in 15 dogs. This review details the characteristic features of three new progestogens which soon will be available in low-dose combination oral contraceptive agents in the United States. Available data suggest that desogestrel, gestodene, and norgestimate are extremely potent progestogens with few androgenic side effects. The smaller changes in lipids induced by these progestogens seem to confer some advantage to the use of preparations containing one of these agents. Whether this advantage is also present clinically remains to be determined.

Our experience over three years (1984-1986) is described in carrier detection and prenatal testing for hemophilia. We have analysed 50 families: 37 hemophilia A and 13 hemophilia B, 22 isolated cases and 28 familial. Eighty-three women belonging to this panel asked for a genetic risk. In both neutropenic and normal dogs a significant and sustained fall in mean arterial pressure (MAP) occurred within 2 h (P less than .01) of the onset of E. coli bacteremia. The first case report of systemic evenomation by the five-ringed brown snake, Pseudonaja modesta, is presented. The patient had mild general symptoms of envenomation only, with no coagulopathy or evidence of paralysis. Data on P. modesta venom is presented, which shows an absence of a coagulant component in this venom. The venom gives a positive reaction to brown snake venom in the CSL Venom Detection Kit.
