BACKGROUND: To identify the risk factors associated with rebleeding in obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB) patients from southern China … patients had diabetes mellitus (13.9% vs. 2.9%) and overt bleeding (70.4% vs. 38.6%), and required blood transfusions (43.1% vs. 8.0%), compared with non-rebleeding patients, respectively. Multivariate logistic analysis indicated that drinking alcohol (odds ratio (OR): 9.27; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.35-63.78), anemia (OR: 17.38; 95% CI = 5.48-55.10), and b …

BACKGROUND: Use of tourniquet during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with radiographic arterial calcifications is controversial. Intimal arterial calcifications are feared to be associated with ischemic complications such as delayed wound healing and arterial thrombosis, whereas medial calcifications stiffen the arterial wall, possibly leading to tourniquet failure and increased blood loss.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study to determine the incidence of tourniquet failure (inflated up to 300 mm Hg), blood transfusions, wound healing, and ischemic complications in thig…

BACKGROUND: Fronto-supraorbital bar advancement in the treatment for trigonocephaly is associated with extensive intraoperative blood loss and compensatory erythrocyte transfusions. Since both are related to the length of surgery, efforts have been focused on optimizing preoperative preparations. The utilization of three-dimensional skull models in surgical planning allows for familiarization with the patient's anatomy, the optimization of osteotomies, the preparation of bone grafts and the selection of fixation plates.
METHODS: Stereolithographic skull models were used in the surgical planni

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Three recent probable cases of transmission of a variant of human Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) through blood transfusion suggest that the disease can be transmitted through transfusion of blood components from presymptomatic blood donors. In this study, we investigated the performance of a new filter for reducing the levels of infectious prions (PrP(Sc)) from red cell concentrates (RCC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Endogenous Infectivity: A pool of 500 ml of whole blood was collected from 263K-strain scrapie-infected hamsters into an anticoagulant, processed into non…

INTRODUCTION: Prior studies and scoring systems have been developed to optimize massive transfusion protocol (MTP) in adults, but an established protocol for children does not yet exist. This study aimed to evaluate the factors associated with survival in MTP activation among pediatric trauma patients.
METHODS: Patients aged 18 y and under who received MTP were queried from the National Trauma Data Bank from 2017 to 2019, with MTP defined as receiving >40 mL/kg of blood products (e.g., red blood cells, plasma, and platelets) within 4 h of admission. Patients with fatal injuries and/or no sign

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Trauma is the most common cause of pediatric mortality. Much of the research that led to life-saving interventions in adults, however, has not been replicated in the pediatric population. Children have important physiologic and anatomic differences from adults, which impact hemostasis and transfusion. Hemorrhage is a leading cause of death in trauma, and children have important differences in their coagulation profiles. Transfusion strategies, including the massive transfusion protocol and use of antifibrinolytics, are still controversial. In addition to the blood that is lo

INTRODUCTION: Cesarean section is more frequent in pregnant women with uterine myomas, and is usually complicated with perioperative hemorrhage. In some cases, cesarean myomectomy represents an inevitable surgery, adding risk of hemorrhage occurrence. Massive obstetric hemorrhage is the most common cause of maternal mortality and morbidity. The aim of this study was to show our experience and results of the implementation of intraoperative blood salvage during cesarean section in the patients with uterine myomas.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study encompassed four patients with uterine myomas wh

BACKGROUND: The Q fever outbreaks in the Netherlands in 2007 to 2009 initiated discussion on the necessity of measures to prevent transmission through blood products. Risk assessments help transfusion regulators decide when and where measures are required. This study assesses the transfusion transmission (TT) risk of Q fever using the European Up-Front Risk Assessment Tool (EUFRAT) model.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We estimated the number of Q fever infections in recipients during the 2007 to 2009 outbreaks' peaks using selected notification data; estimates are calculated from the probability

OBJECTIVE: Severe fetomaternal transplacental hemorrhage increases the risk of fetal anemia. In the third trimester, the syncytiotrophoblast becomes thinner, especially in areas where it comes into intimate contact with villous capillaries, and forms a vasculosyncytial membrane. Our aim was to determine whether ABO compatibility puts the fetus at a greater risk of severe fetomaternal hemorrhage.
DESIGN: Case study.
SETTING: A tertiary care center. Sample and methods. Between 2003 and 2007, we evaluated eight cases of severe fetomaternal transfusion. The Kleihauer-Betke test was used for diag

This is a report on the diagnostic and therapeutic approach in the course of pregnancy and puerperium in a patient suffering from Type III of von-Willebrand-Jürgens' syndrome. Parturition and puerperium were problem-free under peripartial Factor VIII substitution with the cryoprecipitate Ristofact (Behring, Marburg). However, over and above the postpartal inpatient period it is recommended to conduct an outpatient monitoring of coagulation physiology in respect to the most important laboratory parameters for a period of up to 6 weeks after delivery.

We have developed a mouse model for Babesia canis infection using severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice whose circulating red blood cells had been substituted with canine red blood cells. Substitution of red blood cells in SCID mice was achieved by repetitive transfusions of canine red blood cells, together with administration of an antimouse red blood cell monoclonal antibody. Following inoculation of canine-red blood cell-SCID mice with B. canis, parasites proliferated in the canine red blood cells that had been transfused into the SCID mice, resulting in much higher parasitaemia than

BACKGROUND: Many hospital transfusion services prioritize ABO plasma compatibility in platelet (PLT) transfusion to minimize risk for acute hemolytic transfusion reactions. In spite of the low risk of D alloimmunization associated with apheresis PLT transfusion, attempts may also be made to provide D- PLTs to D- patients. This study was undertaken to assess how often ABO compatibility and/or D matching occurs at our institution and how the ABO and D mix of our PLT supply impacts PLT selection.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the ABO and D type of all PLTs transfused plus

Heterologous anti-lymphocyte globulin (ALG) is known to contain panagglutination activity and may cause a positive direct antiglobulin test in a renal allograft recipient. Three patients are reported in whom the passively acquired antibody showed apparent specificity in the Lutheran blood group system. The sera of these patients and eluates from their red cells displayed reactivity consistent with a Lutheran-related antibody. While the neat ALG acted as a panagglutinin, the Lutheran system specificity appeared only following dilution of the ALG. This specificity did not appear to represent a s

Red blood cell (RBC) transfusion is one of the most common medical treatments, with over 10 million units transfused per year in the United States alone. One complication following transfusion is red cell alloimmunization, the production of antibodies to foreign proteins on donor RBCs. Identifying compatible RBC units for alloimmunized patients may be challenging due to the lack of specific RBC reagents with uncommon or rare RBC antigen phenotypes that are needed to identify the precise antibody target. Human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) represent a renewable source of cells to gener
