Development of a questionnaire to assess fear of falling in children with neuromuscular diseases.

Fear of falling (FOF) indicates loss of confidence in the ability to perform daily living activities without falling. Although specific questionnaires do exist to assess FOF in different patient populations, any of them targets the pediatric patients with neuromuscular diseases which falling is a frequent symptom. This study aims to present the development of a self-report FOF questionnaire for children with neuromuscular diseases, pilot application of the questionnaire, and its preliminary psychometric properties. An International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)-bas

Age of walking and intellectual ability in autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental disorders: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Delayed walking is common in intellectual disability (ID) but may be less common when ID occurs with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Previous studies examining this were limited by reliance on clinical samples and exclusion of children with severe motor deficits. OBJECTIVE: To examine in a population-based sample if age of walking is differentially related to intellectual ability in children with ASD versus other neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). METHODS: Participants were from the nested Autism Birth Cohort Study of the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). C

Study of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in children and adolescents with specific learning disorder (dyslexia).

BACKGROUND: Dyslexia is a type of specific learning disability (SLD) which has neurobiological origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. The impaired reading in dyslexia is associated with inability to process the sensory input that enters the nervous system. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has emerged as a potential source in understanding the neurobiology and to identify the brain basis of sensory stimuli processed in dyslexic patients. METHODOLOGY: The present study was conducted to ass

Population cost-effectiveness of the Triple P parenting programme for the treatment of conduct disorder: an economic modelling study.

Parenting programmes are the recommended treatments of conduct disorders (CD) in children, but little is known about their longer term cost-effectiveness. This study aimed to evaluate the population cost-effectiveness of one of the most researched evidence-based parenting programmes, the Triple P-Positive Parenting Programme, delivered in a group and individual format, for the treatment of CD in children. A population-based multiple cohort decision analytic model was developed to estimate the cost per disability-adjusted life year (DALY) averted of Triple P compared with a 'no intervention' sc

Societal Costs of Micronutrient Deficiencies in 6- to 59-month-old Children in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: In Pakistan, nearly half of children younger than 5 years are stunted, and 1 in 3 is underweight. Micronutrient deficiencies, a less visible form of undernutrition, are also endemic. They may lead to increased morbidity and mortality as well as to impaired cognitive and physical development. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the lifetime costs of micronutrient deficiencies in Pakistani children aged between 6 and 59 months. METHODS: We develop a health economic model of the lifetime health and cost consequences of iodine, iron, vitamin A, and zinc deficiencies. We assess medical costs, prod

Neuro-Inflammatory Mechanisms in Developmental Disorders Associated with Intellectual Disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Neuro- Immune Perspective.

Intellectual disability (ID) and autism are present in several neurodevelopmental disorders and are often associated in genetic syndromes, such as Fragile X and Rett syndromes. While most evidence indicates that a genetic component plays an important role in the aetiology of both autism and ID, a number of studies suggest that immunological dysfunctions may participate in the pathophysiology of these disorders. Brain-specific autoantibodies have been detected in the sera of many autistic children and autoimmune disorders are increased in families of children with autism. Furthermore, cytokine

Aspects of Attention in Rett Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: We sought to examine fundamental aspects of attention in children with Rett syndrome, a severely disabling neurodevelopmental disorder caused by spontaneous mutations in the X-linked MECP2 gene. To gauge their attention, we used eye tracking, which bypasses the profound impairments in expressive language and hand use in Rett syndrome. We report two aspects of attention-shifting and sustaining-basic abilities known to drive cognitive growth. METHODS: Two groups were compared: those with Rett syndrome (N = 20; 3-15 years) and a typically developing comparison group (N = 14; 3-16 yea

Structural brain alterations of Down's syndrome in early childhood evaluation by DTI and volumetric analyses.

OBJECTIVES: To provide an initial assessment of white matter (WM) integrity with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and the accompanying volumetric changes in WM and grey matter (GM) through volumetric analyses of young children with Down's syndrome (DS). METHODS: Ten children with DS and eight healthy control subjects were included in the study. Tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) were used in the DTI study for whole-brain voxelwise analysis of fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) of WM. Volumetric analyses were performed with an automated segmentation method to obtain regional

Maternal mental health and risk of child protection involvement: mental health diagnoses associated with increased risk.

BACKGROUND: Previous research shows that maternal mental illness is an important risk factor for child maltreatment. This study aims to quantify the relationship between maternal mental health and risk of child maltreatment according to the different types of mental health diagnoses. METHODS: The study used a retrospective cohort of children born in Western Australia between 1990 and 2005, with deidentified linked data from routine health and child protection collections. RESULTS: Nearly 1 in 10 children (9.2%) of mothers with a prior mental health contact had a maltreatment allegation. Alte

Perception of tone and aspiration contrasts in Chinese children with dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown a relationship between speech perception and dyslexia in alphabetic writing. In these studies speech perception was measured using phonemes, a prominent feature of alphabetic languages. Given the primary importance of lexical tone in Chinese language processing, we tested the extent to which lexical tone and aspiration, two fundamental dimensions of Cantonese speech not represented in writing, would distinguish dyslexic from non-dyslexic 8-year-old Chinese children. Tone and aspiration were tested in addition to other phonological processing skills acros

Clinical phenotype of South African children with neurofibromatosis 1.

Forty-eight children with neurofibromatosis 1 presenting between 2000 and 2004 were reviewed for their clinical phenotype, and data were compared with published reports. The median age at presentation was 4 years (range 10 days to 12 years). The male to female ratio was similar (22 male:26 female). There were frequencies of café au lait spots, axillary freckling, Lisch nodules, and new mutations comparable to those cited in the literature. Fewer patients had neurofibromas (4%), but more patients had plexiform neurofibromas of the head and neck (16%). Three patients of the 22 who had neuroimagi

Awareness about a national immunization day programme in the Sunsari district of Nepal.

The initiative to eradicate poliomyelitis globally by the year 2000 was launched at the Forty-first World Health Assembly in May 1988, when all WHO Member States were challenged to help eradicate poliomyelitis from the world, a gift to the children of the twenty-first century. In Nepal, 100-250 children per year become disabled due to poliomyelitis. The government of Nepal is determined to eradicate the disease from the country by the year 2000 through the National Immunization Day (NID) Programme. Since 1996, about 3.3 million children under 5 years of age have been immunized each year in Nep

Early reading performance: a comparison of teacher-based and test-based assessments.

An unresolved question in early screening is whether test-based or teacher-based assessments should form the basis of the classification of children at risk of educational failure. Available structured teacher rating scales are lacking in predictive validity, and teacher predictions of students likely to experience reading difficulties have yielded disappointing true positive rates, with teachers failing to identify the majority of severely disabled readers. For this study, three educational screening instruments were developed: (a) a single teacher rating, categorizing children into three lev
