Cognitive Rehabilitation for Adults with a History of Traumatic Brain Injury.

Cognitive rehabilitation following traumatic brain injury (TBI) involves a targeted, individualized approach to address deficits in attention, memory, executive functions, and/or other cognitive domains. This overview highlights the importance of thorough assessment to inform cognitive rehabilitation, a multidimensional approach, and current best practices in intervention strategies. It provides exemplar compensatory strategies for each cognitive domain. In addition to broad clinical practice guidelines, it also addresses unique considerations that may be warranted in some subgroups with TBI.

The molecular mechanisms of steroid hormone effects on cognitive function.

OBJECTIVE: There is a lack of information on the molecular mechanisms by which steroid hormones (testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone) regulate cognitive impairment. Thus, we aimed to identify the protective effects of steroid hormones on cognitive function. METHODS: We analyzed the literature on the molecular mechanisms, biological activities, physicochemical properties, and pharmacokinetics of steroid hormones. RESULTS: Steroid hormones can protect against cognitive impairment by regulating key genes (INS, TNF, STAT3, ESR1). Specific microRNAs, namely hsa-miR-335-5p, hsa-miR-16-5p, and

[Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for individuals with chronic headaches].

Introduction: Chronic headache is one of the most common health issues leading to long-term disability, which results not only in a decline in the quality of life but also increases depressive and anxiety-related symptoms. In the case of chronic pain, the effectiveness of acute pain relief is limited. International research increasingly highlights the importance of modifying psychological and behavioral factors associated with pain. According to the literature, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy has been proven effective in reducing the burden of chronic headaches, primarily by improving the

The Moderating Effects of Cognitive Processes on Pain-related Outcomes.

Although evidence supports the importance of pain-related thoughts (ie, cognitive content, or what people think) as predictors of pain and pain-related function, evidence regarding the role of cognitive processes (ie, how people think about pain, eg, by accepting pain, not making judgments about pain, or being absorbed by the pain experience) in adjustment to chronic pain is in its early stages. Using baseline data from a clinical trial of individuals with chronic low back pain (N = 327), the study aimed to increase knowledge regarding the associations between cognitive processes, pain intensi

Mild cognitive impairment in Huntington's disease: challenges and outlooks.

Although Huntington's disease (HD) has classically been viewed as an autosomal-dominant inherited neurodegenerative motor disorder, cognitive and/or behavioral changes are predominant and often an early manifestation of disease. About 40% of individuals in the presymptomatic period of HD meet the criteria for mild cognitive impairment, later progressing to dementia. The heterogenous spectrum of cognitive decline is characterized by deficits across multiple domains, particularly executive dysfunctions, but the underlying pathogenic mechanisms are still poorly understood. Investigating the patho

CSF synaptic biomarkers and cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: People with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) experience various degrees of cognitive impairment (CI). Synaptic dysfunction may contribute to CI in PwMS but cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) synaptic biomarkers are unexplored in MS. OBJECTIVE: To assess the role of CSF synaptosomal-associated protein 25 (SNAP-25), β-synuclein, neurogranin and neurofilament light chain protein (NfL) in patients with early relapsing MS with and without CI. METHODS: We measured CSF SNAP-25, β-synuclein, and neurogranin in 48 untreated PwMS and 50 controls with other neurological diseases (ONDs) and tested their ass

Cerebral and cerebellar correlates of social cognitive impairment in schizophrenia.

Social cognition is a broad construct encompassing the ways in which individuals perceive, process, and use information about other people. Social cognition involves both lower- and higher-level processes such as emotion recognition and theory of mind, respectively. Social cognitive impairments have been repeatedly demonstrated in schizophrenia spectrum illnesses and, crucially, are related to functional outcomes. In this review, we summarize the literature investigating the brain networks implicated in social cognitive impairments in schizophrenia spectrum illnesses. In addition to cortical a…

Neuroanatomical and neurocognitive changes associated with subjective cognitive decline.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD) can progress to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia and thus may represent a preclinical stage of the AD continuum. However, evidence about structural changes observed in the brain during SCD remains inconsistent. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate, in subjects recruited from the CompAS project, neurocognitive and neurostructural differences between a group of forty-nine control subjects and forty-nine individuals who met the diagnostic criteria for SCD and exhibited high levels

Impairment of cognitive functions in children and adolescents with focal epilepsy.

INTRODUCTION: Frontal Lobe Epilepsy (FLE) and Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) are the two most frequent types of focal epilepsies and they are connected with difficulties in cognitive functioning. Despite multiple trials to systematize profile of cognitive functioning among children with epilepsy by researchers, the available data are ambiguous. The aim of our study was to compare the cognitive function of children upon diagnosis of TLE and FLE and during follow-up and to compare with a control group of healthy children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Study included 39 patients with newly diagnosed TLE,

Overlapping and unique brain responses to cognitive and response inhibition.

Although cognitive inhibition and response inhibition fall under the umbrella term of inhibition, the question remains whether the two aspects of inhibition engage shared or distinct brain regions. The current study is one of the first to examine the neural underpinnings of cognitive inhibition (e.g. the Stroop incongruency effect) and response inhibition (e.g. "no-go" response) within a single task. Adult participants (n = 77) completed an adapted version of the Simon Task in a 3T MRI scanner. The results demonstrated that cognitive and response inhibition recruited a group of overlapping bra

Oxidative Stress in Brain in Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI), arguably the earliest clinical stage of Alzheimer disease (AD), is characterized by normal activities of daily living but with memory issues but no dementia. Oxidative stress, with consequent damaged key proteins and lipids, are prominent even in this early state of AD. This review article outlines oxidative stress in MCI and how this can account for neuronal loss and potential therapeutic strategies to slow progression to AD.

Eye movement changes as an indicator of mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of patients at risk of dementia, alongside timely medical intervention, can prevent disease progression. Despite their potential clinical utility, the application of diagnostic tools, such as neuropsychological assessments and neuroimaging biomarkers, is hindered by their high cost and time-consuming administration, rendering them impractical for widespread implementation in the general population. We aimed to develop non-invasive and cost-effective classification models for predicting mild cognitive impairment (MCI) using eye movement (EM) data. METHODS: We c
