Cysticercosis is a disease caused by tapeworm Taenia solium. It is commonly found in developing countries, but reports of its frequent occurrences even in developed countries due to immigrants from infected areas are widely reported. When cysticercosis affects the brain, the condition is commonly called neurocysticercosis however, sporadic cases of solitary intramuscular cysticercosis have been reported in the literature. We present a case of solitary cysticercosis in the right deltoid muscle in a 25-year-old woman who presented with a painful swelling on the right shoulder. The diagnosis was …

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, a microorganism that usually affects skin and nerves. Although it is usually well-controlled by multidrug therapy (MDT), the disease may be aggravated by acute inflammatory reaction episodes that cause permanent tissue damage particularly to peripheral nerves. Tuberculosis is predominantly a disease of the lungs; however, it may spread to other organs and cause an extrapulmonary infection. Both mycobacterial infections are endemic in developing countries including Brazil, and cases of coinfection have been reported in the …

Sheehan's syndrome (SS) refers to the occurrence of varying degree of hypopituitarism after parturition (1). It is a rare cause of hypopituitarism in developed countries owing to advances in obstetric care and its frequency is decreasing worldwide. However, it is still frequent in underdeveloped and developing countries. Sheehan's syndrome is often diagnosed late as it evolves slowly (2,3). Reports of psychoses in patients with Sheehan's syndrome are rare. Herein, a case report of psychosis in a 31 year old woman who developed Sheehan's syndrome preceded by postpartum haemorrhage is presented.…

Primary or secondary, lymphedema is lymphatic dysfunction which results in protein-rich interstitial fluid accumulated in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. In developed countries, surgical resection of regional lymph nodes or chronic inflammation process is the most common etiology of lymphedema instead of parasite infection seen in developing countries. Patients with lymphedema sustain either cosmetic or functional problems, and several studies have indicated the potential risk, though not high, transforming lymphedema to lymphangiosarcoma. Here we introduce a simple idea with staged Charles …

Acute rheumatic fever develops after an inadequate immune response to throat streptococcal infection that induces the production of antibodi … administration of antibiotics). However, rheumatic heart disease remains a major health problem in developing countries. Recently, echocardiography identified children with mild features of the disease, thereby allowing early treatment.

Trichomonas vaginalis is known as an important cause of sexually transmitted infection in developing countries. The prevalence and spectrum of Trichomonasis in men are less characterised. We analysed the presence of T. vaginalis in 80 infertile men using wet mount microscopy, Giemsa staining, culture and PCR methods. We found 2.5% positivity for T. vaginalis using PCR method. Wet mount microscopy was ineffective. Giemsa staining and culture tests were positive only in one patient. Both of our PCR-positive patients were symptomatic. Our findings suggest that T. vaginalis should be considered fo…

Blood-feeding mosquitoes, including the dengue and yellow fever vector Aedes aegypti, transmit many of the world's deadliest diseases. Such diseases have resurged in developing countries and pose clear threats for epidemic outbreaks in developed countries. Recent mosquito genome projects have stimulated interest in the potential for arthropod-borne disease control by genetic manipulation of vector insects, and genes that regulate development are of particular interest. This protocol describes a method for fixation and dissection of Ae. aegypti embryos, larvae, and pupae. Tissue processed in th…

Chronic ulcerative colitis is being encountered with increasing frequency in developing countries. In Amman, Jordan, the records of 372 patients with chronic ulcerative colitis diagnosed between 1994 and 2001 were reviewed. Bloody diarrhoea and crampy abdominal pain were the most common presenting symptoms (84% of patients). The mean age at onset was 31.8 years. In two thirds of patients the diagnosis was made more than 1 year after the onset of symptoms. The pattern of the disease differed from that in industrialized countries in the mild course of the disease, the absence of skin manifestati…

Rheumatic fever (RF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) are postinfectious complications of an infection (or repeated infection) with the Gram-positive bacterium, Streptococcus pyogenes (also known as group A streptococcus, GAS). RF and RHD are global problems and affect many indigenous populations of developed countries and many developing countries. However, RF and RHD are only part of a larger spectrum of diseases caused by this organism. The development of a vaccine against GAS has primarily targeted the abundant cell-surface protein called the M-protein. This review focuses on different M-…

Chorea gravidarum is a rare movement disorder of pregnancy with a broad differential diagnosis. Although often a benign condition, it may indicate underlying acute rheumatic fever, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome or a hypercoagulable state. However, now that rheumatic fever is rare in western countries, chorea gravidarum occurs most commonly in patients with chronic rheumatic heart disease. Heightened awareness of chorea gravidarum and the morbidity of the often associated rheumatic heart disease, particularly in immigrants from developing countries, is essential for early diagnosis and eff…

ORS has led to improved outcome of acute gastroenteritis in both industrialised and developing countries. In both settings there is an increasing demand for active therapy to reduce the duration of diarrhoea and its complications. Persistent diarrhoea is a major consequence of intestinal infections and is responsible for a high number of deaths in poor countries. Bismuth subsalicylate has been used for treatment of acute diarrhoea, with preliminary promising results. In this issue of Acta Paediatrica, a trial with BSS is essential. However the results were marginal and did not justify a mass s…

Tuberculosis of the central nervous system remains quite rare in developed countries, accounting for only 0.53% of cases of tuberculosis in the United States. The most common form of intracranial tuberculosis is tuberculous meningitis; however, involvement may also take the form of a solid granulomatous mass (tuberculoma), which accounts for 15% to 30% of the neurosurgical cases in developing countries. An unusual case of a hypothalamic tuberculoma is presented in a man, who initially presented with signs and symptoms consistent with panhypopituitarism. Brain biopsy on two occasions confirmed …

Blood samples can be difficult to obtain in studies involving serial sampling, especially in developing countries where there may also be logistic, ethical, and cultural constraints that make frequent blood collection impractical. Assays for steroids in saliva may avoid some of these difficulties. A multicenter study involving laboratories in five countries was carried out to compare the results of assays for salivary estradiol and progesterone performed with centrally provided reagents and assay protocols. Concentrations of salivary steroid as obtained by all but one center were comparable wi…

PURPOSE: Ectopic pregnancy (EP) is a significant contributor to maternal mortality, posing a major burden on women in developing countries. This study examined global trends in EP mortality from 1982 to 2021, focusing on developing nations represented by BRICS countries (Brazil, Russian Federation, India, China, and South Africa).
METHODS: Based on the Global Burden Disease (GBD) 2021, an analysis of EP mortality was conducted by location (global and BRICS), age group (15-49 years), and years (1982-2021). The age-period-cohort (APC) model was utilized to estimate net drift, local drift, age e…

Cervical cancer is a major public health problem, as it is the second most common cancer in women world-wide after breast cancer. About 80% of the half a million cases estimated to occur annually in the world, occur in developing countries. The epidemiological evidence linking human papillomavirus (HPV) to cervical cancer is reviewed. It is concluded that over 90% of cervical cancers can be attributed to certain HPV types. HPV 16 accounts for the highest proportion (50%) followed by HPV 18 (12%), HPV 45 (8%) and HPV 31 (5%). The association with these HPV types are very strong and consistent w…

Human population migration is a common phenomenon in developing countries. Four categories of migration-endemic to nonendemic areas, rural to urban areas, non-MDA areas to areas that achieved lymphatic filariasis (LF) control/elimination, and across borders-are relevant to LF elimination efforts. In many situations, migrants from endemic areas may not be able to establish active transmission foci and cause infection in local people in known nonendemic areas or countries. Urban areas are at risk of a steady inflow of LF-infected people from rural areas, necessitating prolonged intervention meas…
