Microbial ecology shifts in the ileum of broilers during feed withdrawal and dietary manipulations.

Broilers are withheld from feed for 8 to 24 h before processing to empty the gastrointestinal tract and reduce potential carcass contamination from gastrointestinal tract contents. Intestinal microbial changes during feed withdrawal (FW) have not been thoroughly defined. Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of diet and FW on the microbial ecology in the small intestine. In experiment 1, 42-d-old broilers were fed diets containing no additive (control), 250 ppm of CuSO(4), or bacitracin (BMD; 30 ppm) and were also subjected to FW for 0, 10, and 24 h. Six birds from each dietary

Should we restrict chloride rather than sodium?

Low-salt diets have potential for prevention and treatment of hypertension, and may also reduce risk for stroke, left ventricular hypertrophy, osteoporosis, renal stones, asthma, cataract, gastric pathology, and possibly even senile dementia. Nonetheless, the fact that salt restriction evokes certain counter-regulatory metabolic responses-- increased production of renin and angiotensin II, as well as increased sympathetic activity--that are potentially inimical to vascular health, has suggested to some observers that salt restriction might not be of unalloyed benefit, and might in fact be cont

Dietary pterostilbene supplementation enhances growth performance, meat quality, antioxidant capacity, and cecal microbiota in yellow-feathered broilers.

This study evaluated effects of dietary supplementation with different levels of pterostilbene (PTE) on growth performance, meat quality, antioxidant capacity, and cecal microbial community in yellow-feathered broilers. A total of 240 one-day-old male broilers with similar initial body weights (36.68 ± 0.27 g) were assigned to four dietary treatments, each having six replicate pens containing ten birds: CON (basal diet), PTE150 (150 mg pterostilbene / kg diet), PTE300 (300 mg pterostilbene /kg diet), and PTE450 (450 mg pterostilbene / kg diet). Dietary supplementation of PTE significantly impr

Effect of a 6-month low-carbohydrate diet on the circulating fatty acid composition in patients with type 2 diabetes: a secondary analysis of an open-label randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Circulating fatty acid profiles are linked to cardiovascular disease risk and mortality. Short-term interventions suggest that low-carbohydrate diets (LCDs) promote cardioprotective shifts in circulating fatty acids in obesity. OBJECTIVES: We examined whether a 6-mo, non-calorie-restricted, LCD high in fat similarly improves circulating fatty acid composition in adults with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: In an open-label, randomized, controlled trial, 71 individuals with type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned 2:1 to an LCD [maximum of 20 E% (energy per cent) carbohydrates] or a contro

Socioeconomic, lifestyle and clinical determinants of health-related quality of life in adults with celiac disease: a national cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a key outcome in the long-term management of celiac disease, yet many adults report persistent limitations despite adherence to a gluten-free diet. Evidence on the independent contribution of socioeconomic, lifestyle, and psychological factors to HRQoL at the population level remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a national cross-sectional study including 1,050 adults with celiac disease living in Spain, recruited through patient associations. Sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, mental health, and disease-related variab

Gut Microbiota, Diet and Lipid Metabolism in Adolescents with NAFLD and Their Role in Preventive Strategies.

Adolescence is a metabolically vulnerable period, during which rapid physiological maturation coincides with the dynamic remodelling of the gut microbiome. This narrative review summarises evidence from 2015 to 2025 to clarify how disturbances to the gut-liver axis driven by dysbiosis contribute to the development and progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in young people. Based on a systematic search of the databases PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science, we outline the basis of bidirectional communication between the gut and liver and emphasise how microbial imbalance alters th

6-Gingerol ameliorates high-fat, high-sucrose diet-induced metabolic dysfunction and depressive-like behaviors by attenuating neuroinflammation and oxidative stress.

High-calorie diets cause metabolic syndrome, obesity, and emotional disturbances, with neurological consequences. These prevalent conditions impair both peripheral and central nervous system function, elevating depression risk. These complications represent prevalent chronic conditions in modern society. The bioactive compound 6-gingerol demonstrates antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study investigated 6-gingerol’s protective effects against depression-like behavior and metabolic syndrome induced by a high-fat, high-sucrose diet (HFHS) in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were ra

Diet Containing Soy Protein Concentrate With Low and High Isoflavones for 9 Weeks Protects Against Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Steatosis Using Obese Zucker Rats.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is one of the main liver diseases in the US and the world which often is related to obesity. Previously, we reported short- and long-term consumption of soy protein isolate diet with high isoflavones can reduce liver steatosis in the male and female obese Zucker rat model. However, the effects of high vs. low soy isoflavones on NAFLD is less known. The objectives of the present study were to examine the role of isoflavones levels in soy protein concentrate diets on protection against NAFLD in an obese rat model. Forty-two 6-week old lean (L, n = 21) a

Reduced-particle size wheat bran and endoxylanase supplementation in broiler feed affect arabinoxylan hydrolysis and fermentation with broiler age differently.

Since the caecal microbiota of young broilers are not yet able to ferment the dietary fibre (DF) fraction of the feed to a large extent, increasing the accessibility of DF substrates along the gastrointestinal tract is crucial to benefit from the health stimulating metabolic end-products (e.g. butyric acid) generated upon microbial DF fermentation. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the potential of reduced-particle size wheat bran (RPS-WB) and endoxylanases as feed additives to stimulate arabinoxylan (AX) hydrolysis and fermentation along the hindgut of young broilers. To this end

Evaluation of Qualitative Dietary Protocol (Diet4Hashi) Application in Dietary Counseling in Hashimoto Thyroiditis: Study Protocol of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

The current state of knowledge related to diet in Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) is far from satisfactory, as many HT subjects experience several disorders and report reduced quality of life. There are three aims of the study: (1) to develop a qualitative dietary protocol (QDP; 'Diet4Hashi') as a simple, graphic-text tool dedicated to TH subjects, (2) to evaluate the use of the QDP in dietetic counseling compared to conventional dietetic counseling (CDC) in HT women, and (3) to assess the impact of both the QDP and the CDC on the diet quality, quality of life, adiposity, and metabolic parameters o

Study protocol for a theory-informed randomized controlled trial of a lifestyle and sleep intervention to improve quality of life and physical activity in inactive adults: the SleeP exercIse nutRition heALth+ SPIRAL+ study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep, physical activity, and diet are key determinants of health, each independently associated with chronic disease risk and mortality. These behaviors also interact: insufficient sleep can impair physical activity and dietary choices, while regular exercise and healthy diet promote better sleep. Although lifestyle interventions commonly target physical activity and diet, few simultaneously address sleep. Emerging evidence suggests that even small improvements across all three behaviors can reduce all-cause mortality, highlighting the potential of multi-behavior approaches. Howev

Probiotic co-administration attenuates developmental cafeteria diet-induced cellular stress and NLRP3 inflammasome signaling in the spleen.

BACKGROUND: Early life exposure to obesogenic diets is increasingly associated with persistent immunometabolic dysregulation. However, the effects of such dietary stress on splenic apoptosis, autophagy, and inflammasome signaling during the developmental period remain insufficiently characterized. This study investigated whether probiotic supplementation modulates cafeteria diet (Cd)-induced molecular alterations in splenic tissue during the post-weaning period. METHODS: Twenty-one-day-old male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 7/group): Control (Cnt), Cafeteria diet (Cd)
