[Ultra-thin transnasal esophagogastroduodenoscopy].

It is reported that ultra-thin transnasal esophagogastroduodenoscopy (TN-EGD) reduces pharyngeal discomfort and is more tolerable for the patients. Ultra-thin transnasal endoscopy has been reported as inferior to transoral conventional EGD (TO-EGD) in terms of image quality, suction, air insufflation and lens washing, due to the smaller endoscope caliber. TN-EGD should be conducted slowly, with short distance observation, and also with image-enhanced endoscopy. With reference to image-enhanced endoscopy, chromoendoscopy method (indigocarmine) is suitable for gastric neoplasm, on the other hand

Vasculitis and the gastrointestinal tract.

Vasculitis, defined as a non-infectious inflammatory disorder of blood vessels, can affect vessels of any type in any organ. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract may thus also be involved. In systemic disorders as mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) and systemic lupus erythematodes (SLE), patients may present with symptoms of gastrointestinal disfunction such as motility disorders, caused by alterations in the connective tissue. True vasculitis however also occurs in the GI tract. Severe, occlusive damage often leads to ischemia that may result in ulceration and perforation. Non-occlusive vascul

Phenol-Based Protein Extraction Method for Plant Proteomic Studies.

The protein extraction method based on the phenol solution and combined with protein precipitation with ammonium acetate in methanol and purification in the same solution, and additionally in acetone and ethanol, is recommended for proteomic studies of plant tissues. The obtained protein samples do not require additional nucleic acid digestion and removal of interfering contaminations. The presented protocol was used to analyze the proteome of common buckwheat flowers and leaves.

Identification of bifunctional GA and AG intrastrand crosslinks formed between cisplatin and DNA.

A combination of enzymatic digestion and electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) was used to characterise bifunctional adducts in which cisplatin is bound to GA base sequences in 8mer and 16mer oligonucleotides that do not contain other, higher affinity binding sites. The extent of formation of bifunctional adducts with GA base sequences was significant, but less than that seen with similar oligonucleotides containing either AG or GG sequences.

Effect of a second bloodmeal on the oesophagus colonization by Leishmania mexicana complex in Lutzomyia evansi (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Migration and colonization of the oesophagus by Leishmania mexicana parasites were enhanced after digestion of a second bloodmeal intake in Lutzomyia evansi. This event has epidemiological significance since it affects the infection susceptibility of this sand fly species, which is a proven vector of L. chagasi in Colombian and Venezuelan visceral leishmaniasis foci. Also, it may explain the host seeking behaviour displayed by some partially bloodfed flies found inside houses.

Association of KM genotype with bullous pemphigoid.

Association of kappa light chain immunoglobulin allotypes with bullous pemphigoid was examined in 101 Caucasian patients. Km alleles were determined by polymerase chain reaction amplification followed by restriction enzyme digestion. The frequency of Km(3)/Km(1,2)kappa light-chain genotype was found to be significantly associated with the disease, while that of the Km(3)homozygous genotype was significantly higher in patients with both anti-BPAG1 and anti-BPAG2 autoantibodies.

Submandibular salivary gland fibrosis.

Although the salivary glands are the primary participants in the first stage of digestion, they are discussed infrequently by clinicians of every category. Rarely, are they mentioned in the physical examination of a patient's medical record. Nonetheless, these glands are of clinical significance and worthy of diagnostic evaluation. A brief review is given of submandibular salivary gland fibrosis concerning the anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical aspects diagnosis, and its treatment.

Evidence for new phosphorylation sites for protein kinase C and cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase in bovine heart 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase.

Bovine heart 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase (PFK-2/FBPase-2) was phosphorylated by incubation with [gamma-32P]MgATP and cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) or protein kinase C (PKC). After digestion with chymotrypsin, the phosphorylation sites for the two protein kinases were identified by peptide mapping, and microsequencing. Evidence for new phosphorylation sites for PKA (Ser-483) and PKC (Ser-84 and Ser-466) was obtained.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the mediastinum.

A case of extramedullary plasmacytoma originating from the upper mediastinum is described. Its pathologic, cytologic and immunohistopathologic findings were distinctive. The neoplastic cells had dense bodies in the cytoplasm. Neither M-protein in the serum nor Bence Jones protein in the urine was detected. However, cellular IgG, having a lambda-type light chain was shown, by immunohistochemical staining following trypsin digestion, to be present in the tissue sections.

Interpreting body MRI cases: classic findings in abdominal MRI.

Few things in radiology are "pathognomonic" in their appearance or presentation. However, having an awareness of those findings which are specific to a certain entity is important when interpreting imaging studies. These classic findings can be identified with many imaging modalities, but no modality provides as many recognizable observations as an MRI. This results from the large variety of pulse sequences that provide high contrast resolution, prior to and following contrast administration. In this article, the most classically recognized abdominal findings are presented including the follow

[Physiopathologic concepts related to patients undergoing total gastrectomy].

Total gastrectomy due, principally, to malignant diseases, has two aims: a) to carry out an adequate oncological operation, and b) to perform a simple reconstruction of the digestive tract which must avoid biliary esophageal reflux. All other functional disturbances may be controlled by adequate diet. Pseudogastric jejunal pouches are, at present, being abandoned. The reduced intestinal malabsorption--favored by the loss of the stomach and the bacterial proliferation--is kept under control, it seemed, by the function of the "ileal brake", which, when certain fat acids and other substances reac

The spectrum of esophagitis in patients living with HIV - a scoping review.

Esophageal lesions are common findings in disorders of the digestive tract in patients living with HIV, the most typical symptoms being odynophagia and/or dysphagia. This article provides a narrative review of the spectrum of esophagitis in patients living with HIV, focusing on fungal, viral, bacterial and non-infectious etiologies, as well as co-infections with viral hepatitis viruses. The article provides a comprehensive approach to the strategy of diagnosis and the role of upper digestive endoscopy and histopathological examination in the evaluation of esophageal pathology in patients livin
