Decision Making in Paediatric Cardiology. Are We Prone to Heuristics, Biases and Traps?

Hidden traps in decision making have been long recognised in the behavioural economics community. Yet we spend very limited, if any time, analysing our decision-making processes in medicine and paediatric cardiology. Systems 1 and 2 thought processes differentiate between rapid emotional thoughts and slow deliberate rational thoughts. For fairly clear cut medical decisions, in-depth analysis may not be needed, but in our field of paediatric cardiology it is not uncommon for challenging cases and occasionally 'simple' cases to generate significant debate and uncertainty as to the best decision.…

Processes of Internal and International Migration from Chitwan, Nepal.

In this study we examine which factors predict internal and international migration from Chitwan, a flat valley located in the South-Central … cts within Nepal, and places outside of Nepal. Results support hypotheses derived from neoclassical economics, the theory of new economics of migration, social capital theory, and cumulative causation theory. Our results underscore the need for a synthetic theoretical model that incorporates factors operating at the individual, household, and community leve …

A cluster-randomised controlled trial evaluating the effects of a blended care intervention in pregnancy and postpartum on weight, health behaviour, and mental health in women with low socio-economic status.

OBJECTIVES: Pregnancy and the early postpartum period are key for maternal health, with excessive weight gain posing long-term risks. Women with low socio-economic status (SES) are at increased risk, but this group is often not reached. Mobile Health (mHealth) solutions, combined with face-to-face counselling, might better reach such a vulnerable population. The I-PREGNO study evaluated a blended care intervention to improve health behaviours and mental health in women with low SES during the perinatal period. STUDY DESIGN: This two-arm, cluster-randomised controlled trial included an interve

A Novel Parallel-Preheating Supercritical CO2 Brayton Cycle for Waste Heat Recovery from Offshore Gas Turbines: Energy, Exergy, and Economic Analysis Under Variable Loads.

Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) power cycles offer a promising solution for offshore platforms' gas turbine waste heat recovery due to their compact design and high thermal efficiency. This study proposes a novel parallel-preheating recuperated Brayton cycle (PBC) using SC-CO2 for waste heat recovery on offshore gas turbines. An integrated energy, exergy, and economic (3E) model was developed and showed good predictive accuracy (deviations < 3%). The comparative analysis indicates that the PBC significantly outperforms the simple recuperated Brayton cycle (SBC). Under 100% load condition

Is telerehabilitation inferior to face-to-face rehabilitation at improving adherence and pain in patients with chronic low back pain? Protocol for a non-inferiority randomized clinical trial with economic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Exercise is a key component in reducing pain and disability in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Barriers such as geographic distance, treatment costs, lack of support, and low self-efficacy can limit access to physiotherapy and compromise adherence. Synchronous telerehabilitation (ST) has the potential to overcome these barriers, support self-management, and improve adherence to exercise. However, its clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness compared with face-to-face rehabilitation remain unclear. This study aims to investigate whether ST is non-inferior to face-to

Gender and socio-economic differences in physical activity and fitness among rural Bangladeshi adolescents: a cross-sectional study from the 15-year follow-up of MINIMat cohort.

Given the paucity of objective physical activity (PA) and fitness assessment among adolescents in low-income settings, the underlying gender and socio-economic disparities remain poorly understood. Hence, we aimed to examine the associations of gender, household wealth and maternal education with PA and fitness among adolescents of a rural birth cohort in southeast Bangladesh. This cross-sectional study utilized data collected during the 15-year follow-up of MINIMat (Maternal and Infant Nutrition Interventions in Matlab) cohort. In total, 2465 adolescents completed the household survey, and 22

The impact and cost-effectiveness of scaling up HCV treatment for achieving elimination among people who inject drugs in England: a synopsis including evidence synthesis and economic modelling.

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs are disproportionately affected by hepatitis C virus. The emergence of direct-acting antiviral treatments for hepatitis C virus motivated England to achieve the World Health Organization's elimination target of decreasing hepatitis C virus incidence among people who inject drugs to < 2 per 100 person-years (/100 person-years) by 2030. We determined whether existing testing and treatment strategies will reach this target in England, or whether improved strategies are needed and whether they are cost-effective. METHODS: A dynamic hepatitis C virus transmissio
