The descriptive term "hereditary motor sensory neuropathy (HMSN)" includes a group of disorders of different nosology which besides heredity show a progressive distal symmetrical motor sensory neuropathy as a common clinical feature. Electrophysiologic studies can be of help to the clinician in establishing the diagnosis of botulism. This is particularly true when serologic and toxologic confirmation cannot be obtained. Myoelectrical activity was recorded from the human antrum on 136 occasions using a monopolar mucosal electrode in preoperative and post-vagotomy patients, and bipolar serosal electrodes in post-cholecystectomy patients, and the incidence of antral arrhythmias observed. Direct stimulation of a branch of the sacral nerves which lies above the pelvic floor and electromyographic recording of activity in the muscles of the pelvic floor showed that this nerve supplied the puborectalis muscle in 19 of the 20 nerves studied in 16 patients. We studied the pressure developed by the diaphragm in response to stimulation of the phrenic nerve in the neck, in three normal men. When the phrenic was electrically stimulated at increasing frequencies the diaphragm responded by increasing transdiaphragmatic pressure to give a frequency-pressure curve similar to the frequency-force curve for other skeletal muscles. To examine the role of the tensor veli palatini muscle in palatal movement, we conducted 1) quantitative measurement of palatal movement by selective stimulation of the tensor and levator muscles, and 2) EMG recording of the two muscles during phonation. The results were: 1) negligible palatal movement upon tensor stimulation, despite a marked velar elevation by levator stimulation; and 2) little EMG activity of the tensor and marked EMG activity of the levator during phonation. It was concluded that the tensor plays no role in the palatal function.

This is a preliminary report of a method of digital computer analysis of the electromyogram recorded from twenty sites in biceps brachial during fixed voluntary effort. The method allows several EMG parameters to be studied. The results in a group of normal subjects have been compared with those in patients with neuromuscular disease. Three parameters have proved of value in differentiating normal subjects from those with neurogenic disease.

The present case study investigated the efficacy of feedback in restoring muscle control to facial muscles which had been affected by Bell palsy. The subject, a woman, was provided an analog tone as feedback for modifying the muscle activity on the paralyzed (right) side of her face to match that of her nonaffected (left) side.
