Velocity sensitivity of areas 17 and 18 of the cat.

Velocity sensitivity of areas 17 and 18 of the cat has been evaluated by preparing neuronal velocity-response (VR) curves in paralyzed and anaesthetized cats. VR curves suggest two possible mechanisms for neuronal coding of stimulus velocity as well as criterion for distinguishing between cells involved in analysis of stationary or moving objects. VR curves differ between cortical areas and with retinal eccentricity. Neurones with larger receptive fields (RFs) become, on the average, sensitive to faster velocities. Parallels with human psychophysics are pointed out as support of the suggestion

Evoked parietal spikes and childhood epilepsy.

Parietal spikes can be evoked in some children by tactile stimulation of their feet or other parts. I investigated whether this curious phenomenon remains unchanged for several years and then disappears or whether it presages later epilepsy. Some children demonstrating this phenomenon may experience a spontaneous focus of spikes during sleep or waking and later a convulsive state. The cause of this condition may be hyperexcitability of a small cortical parietal area.

Neuron and stimulus typologies in the rat gustatory system.

Although gustatory neurons may be categorized in terms of one or a few characteristics (e.g. 'best stimulus'), such typologies are essentialistic and inconsistent with modern taxonomic methods. If olythetic taxonomic criteria are used and the variability among neuronal responses is closely analyzed, neuronal 'types' are found to disappear, at least within the acid-salt range. This applies to both the primary nerve level (chorda tympani nerve) and secondary level (nucleus tractus solitarius) of the taste system in the rat. In the same context, taste stimuli may fall into different groups if sev

Electroencephalographic and behavioural effects of sodium valproate in patients with photosensitive epilepsy. A single dose trial.

A single oral dose of Sodium valproate (VPA) given as Epilim (10 mg/kg) inhibited photoconvulsive responses, especially to 15--30 Hz frequency flicker, in seven out of ten patients with photosensitive epilepsy. In addition, in all patients (with an exception of one) the amplitude of the secondary slow negative wave of the visual evoked potentials was reduced 4--5 h after drug administration. However, in five of these patients the normalization of electrocortical reactions to a single flash and flickering light was accompanied by somnolence and fatigue, moderate slowing of EEG background, devel…

EEG evoked response, P300 and CNV during processing of sentence information: clinical application.

Evoked response, P300 and CNV were investigated in the condition in which the subject was required to make a differential response to the acoustically and visually presented sentence with or without meaning, and he was able to determine whether the sentence had a meaning or not by understanding the key information. In healthy persons, P300 amplitude to the beginning of information and to the key information were larger than those to the others. P300 latency to the key character was longer. CNV appeared at the beginning of information and continued. The difference between CNVs produced by meani

Hydrogen peroxide depolarizes mitochondria and inhibits IP3-evoked Ca2+ release in the endothelium of intact arteries.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a mitochondrial-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) that regulates vascular signalling transduction, vasocontraction and vasodilation. Although the physiological role of ROS in endothelial cells is acknowledged, the mechanisms underlying H2O2 regulation of signalling in native, fully-differentiated endothelial cells is unresolved. In the present study, the effects of H2O2 on Ca2+ signalling were investigated in the endothelium of intact rat mesenteric arteries. Spontaneous local Ca2+ signals and acetylcholine evoked Ca2+ increases were inhibited by H2O2. H2O2 inhi

Touch-Related Electrophysiology Activity Promotes Human Movements Initiation.

Although touch has been shown to improve motor performance, its specific influence on movement initiation and the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that tactile input robustly enhances movement initiation, although the strength of this facilitation varies across touch types. Using a tactile Go/No-Go Task during different types of touch (i.e., self-touch, object-touch and other-touch), we found that all these types of touch reduced reaction time (RT). To elucidate the neural substrates of this behavior, we employed multimodal neurophysiological assess

Anti-myelin-associated antibodies in Meniere's disease: prevalence and clinical associations.

BACKGROUND: Ménière's Disease (MD) is a complex vestibular disorder, and its pathological mechanism has not been fully elucidated so far. OBJECTIVE: Compare the positive rates of anti-myelin-associated antibodies between patients with MD and the normal control group, and analyze the clinical characteristics of MD patients with positive anti-myelin-associated antibodies. METHODS: Between April 2020 and July 2020, a total of 66 patients diagnosed with definite MD and 42 healthy controls were recruited at Shandong Provincial ENT Hospital. A comprehensive auditory-vestibular function assessment

Alpha transcranial alternating current stimulation modulates pain anticipation and perception in a context-dependent manner.

Pain perception is closely tied to the brain's anticipatory processes, particularly involving the suppression of sensorimotor α-oscillations … ncertain conditions. Compared with sham stimulation, real α-tACS disrupted the habituation of laser-evoked potentials (N2-P2 complex), particularly under certain expectations, with effects persisting 30 minutes poststimulation. In anticipatory brain oscillations, real α-tACS enhanced somatosensory α1-oscillations and increased midfrontal θ-oscillations in condition …

Cortical region-specific recovery of auditory temporal processing following noise-induced hearing loss.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) studies have focused on the lemniscal auditory pathway, but little is known about how NIHL impacts different cortical regions. Here we compared response recovery trajectories in the auditory and frontal cortices (AC, FC) of mice following NIHL. We recorded EEG responses from awake mice (male n = 15, female n = 14) before and following NIHL (longitudinal design) to quantify event related potentials and gap-in-noise temporal processing. Hearing loss was verified by measuring the auditory brainstem response (ABR) before and at 1-, 10-, 23-, and 45-days after nois

Differential Patterns of Visual Sensory Alteration Underlying Face Emotion Recognition Impairment and Motion Perception Deficits in Schizophrenia and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Impaired face emotion recognition (FER) and abnormal motion processing are core features in schizophrenia (SZ) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that have been linked to atypical activity within the visual cortex. Despite overlaps, only a few studies have directly explored convergent versus divergent neural mechanisms of altered visual processing in ASD and SZ. We employed a multimodal imaging approach to evaluate FER and motion perception in relation to functioning of subcortical and cortical visual regions. METHODS: Subjects were 20 high-functioning adults with ASD, 19 patients

Unidirectional monosynaptic connections from auditory areas to the primary visual cortex in the marmoset monkey.

Until the late twentieth century, it was believed that different sensory modalities were processed by largely independent pathways in the primate cortex, with cross-modal integration only occurring in specialized polysensory areas. This model was challenged by the finding that the peripheral representation of the primary visual cortex (V1) receives monosynaptic connections from areas of the auditory cortex in the macaque. However, auditory projections to V1 have not been reported in other primates. We investigated the existence of direct interconnections between V1 and auditory areas in the ma
