Older pedestrians (65 years and above) are among the most vulnerable road users. As the number and proportion of older adults grows in many countries, and awareness of the benefits of active travel becomes increasingly evident, it behooves researchers to further investigate the safety of older pedestrians. This study contributes to the literature by examining the factors that influence older adults' susceptibility to pedestrian incidents (falls incidents and pedestrian-vehicle collisions). To this end, a sample of older adults living in the Greater Golden Horseshoe, South Ontario, Canada was s

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of osteoporotic vertebral body fractures in Europe is 18-26%. Although most of these injuries can be treated conservatively, the underlying concepts have not been defined clearly or uniformly. In this article, we present the current state of the evidence on the diagnosis and conservative treatment of osteoporotic fractures of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature up to May 2020 was carried out in the PubMed and Web of Science Core Collection databases. 549 articles were identified, of which 36 were suitable for inclusion i

Exercise may reduce the risk of falls in the elderly. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of a progressive step marching exercise (PSME) program on balance ability, lower limb muscle strength, aerobic capacity, quality of life, and fear of falling in the elderly. A cluster randomized controlled trial was selected where 30 elderly participants (aged 69 ± 3 years) from a community were supervised while performing a PSME program and 30 (aged 70 ± 3 years) from another community were assigned to a control group. All participants in both groups underwent timed up and go test, one

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review provides an overview of current methods and important aspects to consider when applying virtual worlds in the treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD).
RECENT FINDINGS: Different aspects such as dialogs between avatars and patients have been investigated as well as virtual audiences, emotional facial expression, and verbal interaction with avatars. Results of these studies are promising. Few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have investigated the efficacy of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) in SAD. Unfortunately, most RCTs into the efficacy of VRET in

Learning to swim via a structured program is an important skill to develop aquatic competencies and prevent drowning. Fear of water can produce phobic behaviors counterproductive to the learning process. No research examines the influence of negative aquatic experiences on learning to swim. This study explored the influence of children's negative prior aquatic experiences (NPAE) on learn-to-swim achievement via swim school data. Children's enrolment records (5-12 years) in the Australian Capital Territory were analyzed via demographics, level achieved and NPAE. NPAE was recorded as yes/no, wit

OBJECTIVES: People regulate their interpersonal space appropriately to obtain a comfortable distance for interacting with others. Socially anxious individuals are especially prone to discomfort from and fear of physical closeness, leading them to prefer a greater interpersonal distance from others. Previous studies also indicate that fear can enhance the threat-related elements of a threatening stimulus. For example, spider phobia is associated with estimating spiders as bigger and faster than they actually are. Nonetheless, it is still unclear whether the preference of those with social anxie

OBJECTIVE: The aim: Women of reproductive age often think of motherhood and labor with fear of intense labor pain. The anxiety they experience can lead to their postponing pregnancy. There are not many studies in the literature that research the knowledge young women have about the analgesia of labor. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the state of awareness about the possible methods of labor analgesia among women of childbearing age.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Material and methods: An Internet survey was conducted among 160 women. It consisted of questions on the pharmacological and non

OBJECTIVES: Decades of research have convincingly shown that fear of pain and pain-related avoidance behavior are important precursors of disability in daily life. Reduced activity as a consequence of avoidance, however, cannot be blamed for chronic disability in all patients. A contrasting behavior, pain-related dysfunctional endurance in a task and overactivity has to be considered. Currently, there is a need to better understand the psychological determinants of overactivity, dysfunctional endurance, and neurobiomechanical consequences.
METHODS: This is a narrative review.
RESULTS: The fi

Objective: Fear-avoidance and endurance behavior are well-established maladaptive coping styles in several chronic health conditions. There is also emerging evidence that both fear-avoidance and endurance coping are associated with poor outcome from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The current study sought to characterize the early trajectories of avoidance and endurance behavior and confirm their association with disability outcomes. Method: Adults with mTBI (N = 88) completed measures of avoidance, endurance, and postconcussive symptoms at clinic intake (M = 40.2 days since injury). Avoid

BACKGROUND: Pathological avoidance is a transdiagnostic characteristic of anxiety disorders. Avoidance conditioning re-emerged as a translational model to examine mechanisms and treatment of avoidance. However, its validity for anxiety disorders remains unclear.
METHODS: This study tested for altered avoidance in patients with anxiety disorders compared to matched controls (n = 40/group) using instrumental conditioning assessing low-cost avoidance (avoiding a single aversive outcome) and costly avoidance (avoidance conflicted with gaining rewards). Autonomic arousal and threat expectancy were

Historical descriptions of fear at heights date back to Chinese and Roman antiquity. Current definitions distinguish between three different states of responses to height exposure: a physiological height imbalance that results from an impaired visual control of balance, a more or less distressing visual height intolerance, and acrophobia at the severest end of the spectrum. Epidemiological studies revealed a lifetime prevalence of visual height intolerance including acrophobia in 28% of adults (32% in women; 25% in men) and 34% among prepubertal children aged 8-10 years without gender preponde

Upon retrieval, aversive associative memories may engage alternative processes depending on the conditioned stimulus exposure length. Generally, a short session maintains it through reconsolidation, and a long session inhibits it because of extinction learning. However, various experimental interventions have produced no memory changes when given after intermediate conditioned stimulus exposure events. The lack of effectiveness in the latter case has been explained by a stage of transition from reconsolidation to extinction, during which both phases are engaged but neither prevails. Alternativ

Specific Phobia of Vomiting (SPOV) is an under-researched disorder compared to other Specific Phobias. A systematic review was conducted to synthesise existing research across areas of phenomenology, aetiology, epidemiology, co-morbidity, assessment measures and treatment. Online databases (Psychinfo, Embase, Medline, Pubmed and Cochrane Library) were searched using terms related to SPOV and 'emetophobia'. A manual search of reference lists of included papers was also conducted. In total, 385 articles were found and 24 were included in the review. The review was registered on the PROSPERO regi

The idea that group contexts can intensify emotions is centuries old. Yet, evidence that speaks to how, or if, emotions become more intense in groups remains elusive. Here we examine the novel possibility that group attention--the experience of simultaneous coattention with one's group members--increases emotional intensity relative to attending alone, coattending with strangers, or attending nonsimultaneously with one's group members. In Study 1, scary advertisements felt scarier under group attention. In Study 2, group attention intensified feelings of sadness to negative images, and feeling

Advances achieved over the last three decades have transformed sickle cell disease (SCD) from a fatal childhood disease to a long-term chronic condition. Consequently, patients must transition from paediatric to adult care. The transition is a high-risk period associated with increases in hospital admissions and death. The factors underlying this increased risk include not only characteristics of the disease itself, with the accumulation of disabilities and progression of organ damage, but also psychological factors and a frequent paucity of adult-care resources for SCD. Leaving the familiar p

The present study examined threat interpretation biases in children 7-12 years of age with separation, social and generalised anxiety disorders (N=15), non-anxious offspring at risk due to parental anxiety (N=16) and non-anxious controls of non-anxious parents (N=14). Children provided interpretations of ambiguous situations to assess cognitive, emotional and behavioural responses. In comparison with non-anxious control children and at-risk children who did not differ from each other, anxious children reported stronger negative emotion and less ability to influence ambiguous situations. These

Psychogenic disorders of posture and gait are common and are the major manifestation in 8 to 10% of patients with psychogenic movement disorders. The colorful history of these disorders is reviewed. Anxiety and depression are the commonest psychological accompaniments of functional gait disorder in contemporary practice. The particular case of the cautious gait and its flip side, "fear of falling," are considered in more detail. Common presentations for somatoform disorders and malingering are also described. It is often possible to make this diagnosis based on recognition features and gait ob
