[Results of surgical management of Bennett fractures].

Authors examined in a 15-year material of the Department of Traumatology, Clinic of Surgery of the Pécs University of Medicine the late results of Bennett's fracture, treated surgically. In the treatment of 51 patients they came to the conclusion that the reduction of the fracture with anatomical exactness and the early functional treatment improved the results considerably.

Fractures of the olecranon and radial neck in children.

Over one half of radial neck fractures are associated with other injuries about the elbow. Most radial neck fractures can be treated with closed reduction or with percutaneous probing, even if the other associated injuries require open reduction. The results are good, although radiologic imperfections may be seen after healing. In the older child, olecranon fractures that have significant displacement usually require open reduction with internal fixation.

Tibial tuberosity fracture in adolescents--report of a case and review of the literature.

Avulsion fracture of the tibial tuberosity usually caused by sudden violent contraction of the quadriceps muscles is uncommon and predominantly occurs in adolescents. Illustrative is the case history of a 16-year old boy with an Ogden I-B avulsion fracture successfully treated by open reduction and internal screw fixation. In these cases, anatomic reduction should be the primary goal. In specific cases this can be achieved by closed reduction, however, usually open reduction and fixation is indicated.

The complications of surgical treatment of displaced fractures of the olecranon.

Forty-eight patients who had undergone internal fixation of a displaced fracture of the olecranon by either a tension band technique (34 patients) or screwing (14 patients) were reviewed. The functional results after at least 2 years were equally good with both methods, but there was a considerably higher rate of separation at the fracture after screwing than after inserting a tension band. The technical quality of the fixation was open to criticism in half the cases in each group, and the implications of this are discussed.

Rehabilitation Protocols for Surgically Treated Acetabular Fractures in Older Adults: Current Practices and Outcomes.

Background/Objectives: Acetabular fractures in older adults pose significant challenges due to bone fragility, complex fracture patterns, and increased comorbidities. Surgical management, including isolated open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and ORIF combined with acute total hip arthroplasty (THA) (combined hip procedure-CHP), have advanced considerably. Nevertheless, optimal postoperative rehabilitation and particularly weight-bearing (WB) recommendations remain controversial and inconsistent. This review aims to assess rehabilitation protocols, focusing on WB strategies following t

Experimental study on the biomechanical stability of complex acetabular fractures in the quadrilateral area: application of a dynamic anterior titanium-plate screw system.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Complex acetabular fractures involving quadrilateral areas are more challenging to treat during surgery. To date, there has been no ideal internal fixation for these acetabular fractures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical stability of complex acetabular fractures using a dynamic anterior titanium-plate screw system of the quadrilateral area (DAPSQ) by simulating the standing and sitting positions of pelvic specimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight formal in-preserved cadaveric pelvises aged 30-50 years were selected as the research objects. Fi

Fixation of Displaced Medial Epicondylar Fractures in Adolescents.

UNLABELLED: Fractures of the medial epicondyle are often a marker of injury of the medial collateral ligament complex of the elbow, regardless of displacement. The medial epicondyle serves as the origin for the flexor/pronator mass superficially and the medial collateral ligament near the base. These fractures occur most commonly through the apophysis at the base of the epicondyle, making differentiation of muscular versus ligamentous avulsion difficult. Fractures associated with elbow dislocation and fractures with an intra-articular incarcerated medial epicondyle are ligamentous injuries, re

Head injuries and the risk of concurrent cervical spine fractures.

BACKGROUND: Cervical spine injuries of variable severity are common among patients with an acute traumatic brain injury (TBI). We hypothesised that TBI patients with positive head computed tomography (CT) scans would have a significantly higher risk of having an associated cervical spine fracture compared to patients with negative head CT scans. METHOD: This widely generalisable retrospective sample was derived from 3,023 consecutive patients, who, due to an acute head injury (HI), underwent head CT at the Emergency Department of Tampere University Hospital (August 2010-July 2012). Medical re

Outcome after open reduction and angular stable internal fixation for supra-intercondylar fractures of the distal humerus: preliminary results with the LCP distal humerus system.

INTRODUCTION: Fractures of the distal humerus are complex injuries that can be effectively treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). The new LCP distal humerus system allows angular stable fixation of these complex fractures with anatomically preshaped plates. The aim of the study was to evaluate operative reposition, fracture healing, and pain, function and patient satisfaction after open reduction with an angular stable fixation. METHODS: Fourteen patients with a mean age of 55.2 years (21-83) were treated with open reduction and angular stable internal fixation. Two patient

Defect-free and defective adaptations of crystalline sheets to stretching deformation.

The elastic response of the crystalline sheet to the stretching deformation in the form of wrinkles has been extensively investigated. In this work, we extend this fundamental scientific question to the plastic regime by exploring the adaptations of crystalline sheets to the large uniaxial mechanical stretching. We reveal the intermittent plastic shear deformations leading to the complete fracture of the sheets wrapping the cylinder. Specifically, systematic investigations of crystalline sheets of varying geometry show that the fracture processes can be classified into defect-free and defectiv

Fingertip Injuries.

Family physicians play a pivotal role in providing timely care for common fingertip injuries and minimizing long-term disability after injury. Subungual hematoma is diagnosed clinically and treated with observation or nail trephination. Nail bed lacerations are treated by removal of the nail and repair of the nail bed. Distal interphalangeal joint dislocations typically occur dorsally and result from hyperextension or hyperflexion during sports or because of accidental trauma. Management primarily involves closed reduction and splinting; however, surgical intervention might be necessary for co

[Operative Approaches to the distal radioulnar Joint and distal Ulna].

At the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) and the ulnocarpal joint several anatomical structures are in a limited space. Therefore, the operative approach has to consider the pathology to be treated. The DRUJ may be approached from the dorsal or the palmar side. Procedures to treat the arthrotically destroyed DRUJ involving bone resection of the ulnar head and destabilizing ligamentous injuries of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) are best approached from the dorsal side. This approach allows excellent visualization of the ulnar head and the ulnar and radial attachment of the TFCC. The

Scaphoid Cortical Desmoid in a Snowboarder With Persistent Wrist Pain.

A 28-year-old man presented to our clinic with persistent left wrist pain. Three months earlier, he had fallen on an outstretched hand while snowboarding. Initial radiographs showed no fractures or dislocations; however, magnetic resonance imaging revealed evidence of a dorsal projection from the scaphoid waist. There was no evidence of a scaphoid wrist fracture, scapholunate ligament disruption, or injury. The final diagnosis was avulsive cortical irregularity or cortical desmoid, which pertains to new bone formation at sites of muscle insertion. The literature has identified cases found in t

Fluorescence angiography-assisted debridement of critically perfused glabrous skin in degloving foot injuries: Two case reports.

RATIONALE: Degloving foot injuries are challenging to treat and associated with life-long sequelae for patients. An appropriate debridement of ischemic soft tissues with maximal preservation of glabrous skin is key during the reconstruction of these injuries. Indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence angiography is an established technique for the intraoperative evaluation of tissue perfusion. PATIENT CONCERNS: Two patients sustained complex foot injuries in traffic accidents, including multiple fracture dislocations and extensive degloving of the plantar skin. DIAGNOSIS: Clinical inspection reve…

Clavicle Kirschner Wire Migration into Left Lung: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Kirschner wires are often used to perform osteosynthesis. Migration through tissue of these wires is a rare but well-known occurrence. CASE REPORT A 65-year-old female presented with light intensity pain complaints in the upper left chest area; personal history included left clavicle fracture 20 years ago that was treated surgically with fixation using a K-wire. Chest radiography showed the presence of metallic foreign body in the left pulmonary apex. An exploratory axillary thoracotomy was performed, and the foreign body was extracted by a pneumotomy. CONCLUSIONS To obtain satisfac

Complete Traumatic Separation of Proximal Femoral Epiphysis in A 2 Year Old Child.

INTRODUCTION: Hip fractures are very common in adults, but are rare in children, comprising less than 1% of all pediatric fractures. Separation of the proximal femoral epiphysis can occur in a child with a traumatic hip dislocation and an open epiphysis. Regardless of the mechanism of proximal femoral epiphyseal separation, the prognosis is poor secondary to the development of osteonecrosis. CASE REPORT: Here we are reporting a case of complete separation of the proximal epiphysis of the femur in a 2 year old female child. She was treated by open reduction and internal fixation by a single k-
