Method to Develop Legs for Underwater Robots: From Multibody Dynamics with Experimental Data to Mechatronic Implementation.

Exploration of the seabed may be complex, and different parameters must be considered for a robotic system to achieve tasks in this environment, such as soil characteristics, seabed gait, and hydrodynamic force in this extreme environment. This paper presents a gait simulation of a quadrupedal robot used on a typical terrigenous sediment seabed, considering the mechanical properties of the type of soil, stiffness, and damping and friction coefficients, referenced with the specialized literature and applied in a computational multibody model with many experimental data in a specific underwater …

Sensor-based hip control with hybrid neuroprosthesis for walking in paraplegia.

The objectives of this study were to test whether a hybrid neuroprosthesis (HNP) with an exoskeletal variable-constraint hip mechanism (VCHM) combined with a functional neuromuscular stimulation (FNS) controller can maintain upright posture with less upper-limb support and improve gait speed as compared with walking with either an isocentric reciprocating gait orthosis (IRGO) or FNS only. The results show that walking with the HNP significantly reduced forward lean in FNS-only walking and the maximum upper-limb forces by 42% and 19% as compared with the IRGO and FNS-only gait, respectively. Wa…

Development of a self-contained accelerometry based system for control of functional electrical stimulation in hemiplegia.

For stroke patients, functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been shown in the past to greatly reduce gait impairments. A critical element of the success of this intervention is accurate and reliable triggering of the stimulation for step initiation. Foot switches are the most commonly used devices for triggering hemiplegic FES gait, but they have been known to produce unreliable results and degrade over time. This paper outlines the development of a self-contained accelerometry-based gait stimulation system that can be worn around the waist and unlike other systems, adds no additional har…

Long-term unrestrained measurement of stride length and walking velocity utilizing a piezoelectric gyroscope.

Long-term monitoring of stride length and walking velocity is considered to provide useful information for making decisions on treatment of patients with gait disabilities. The purpose of this study was to develop a device with the following design criteria: lightweight, easy attachment, little hindrance to the natural gait pattern, sufficient memory to record for one day, and practicality in clinical use. The prototype consists of a piezoelectric gyroscope, which detects angular velocity of the thigh of one leg in the sagittal plane, and a microprocessor-based maximum/minimum detector/data lo…

Classification of Ankle Joint Stiffness during Walking to Determine the Use of Ankle Foot Orthosis after Stroke.

Categorization based on quasi-joint stiffness (QJS) may help clinicians select appropriate ankle foot orthoses (AFOs). The objectives of the present study were to classify the gait pattern based on ankle joint stiffness, also called QJS, of the gait in patients after stroke and to clarify differences in the type of AFO among 72 patients after stroke. Hierarchical cluster analysis was used to classify gait patterns based on QJS at least one month before the study, which revealed three distinct subgroups (SGs 1, 2, and 3). The proportion of use of AFOs, articulated AFOs, and non-articulated AFOs…

The de Morton mobility index is a feasible and valid mobility assessment tool in hospitalized patients with an acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

There is no accepted standard for measuring mobility in hospitalized patients with an acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). The objective of this study was to assess convergent, discriminant, and known-group validity and floor/ceiling effects of the de Morton Mobility Index (DEMMI) in hospitalized patients with AECOPD. Individuals with AECOPD (n = 22) admitted to an acute care hospital medical ward were recruited. Data on the DEMMI, gait speed, daytime energy expenditure, step counts, 6-minute walk distance (6MWD), dyspnea, respiratory and heart rates, quality o…

Acute Effect of Robotic Therapy (G-EO System™) on the Lower Limb Temperature Distribution of a Patient with Stroke Sequelae.

Robotic therapy has been gaining prominence in poststroke rehabilitation programs. An example of these devices is the G-EO System™, which simulates gait as well as other more complexes standards of gait such as the steps on stairs. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no studies that apply thermography as a tool to evaluate stroke patients who undertook rehabilitation programs with the aid of robotic devices. The patient IWPS undergoes sequelae of hemorrhagic stroke for 19 months and consequently hemiplegia, had scores of 93 points in the Fugl-Meyer scale, is undertaking a physical…

A novel motion sensor-driven control system for FES-assisted walking after spinal cord injury: A pilot study.

This pilot study reports the development of a novel closed-loop (CL) FES-gait control system, which employed a finite-state controller that processed kinematic feedback from four miniaturized motion sensors. This strategy automated the control of knee extension via quadriceps and gluteus stimulation during the stance phase of gait on the supporting leg, and managed the stimulation delivered to the common peroneal nerve (CPN) during swing-phase on the contra-lateral limb. The control system was assessed against a traditional open-loop (OL) system on two sensorimotor 'complete' paraplegic subjec…

Humans prioritize walking efficiency or walking stability based on environmental risk.

In human gait, the body's mechanical energy at the end of one step is reused to achieve forward progression during the subsequent step, thereby reducing the required muscle work. During the single stance phase, humans rely on the largely uncontrolled passive inverted pendular motion of the body to perpetuate forward motion. These passive body dynamics, while improving walking efficiency, also indicate lower passive dynamic stability in the anterior direction, since the individual will be less able to withstand a forward external perturbation. Here we test the novel hypothesis that humans manip…

Spinal control of locomotion before and after spinal cord injury.

Thoracic spinal cord injury affects long propriospinal neurons that interconnect the cervical and lumbar enlargements. These neurons are cru … m of alternating (walk and trot) and non-alternating (canter, gallop, half-bound gallop, and bound) gaits. After a lateral hemisection injury, rats recovered the ability to locomote over a wide range of speeds but lost the ability to use the highest-speed gaits (half-bound gallop and bound) and predominantly used the limb contralateral to the injury as …

Dynamic Lower Extremity Deformity in Children With Pseudoachondroplasia.

BACKGROUND: Pseudoachondroplasia is a diverse group of skeletal dysplasias with a common pathway of altered cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) production. This rhizomelic dwarfism is commonly associated with deformities of the lower extremities, accelerated osteoarthritis, and ligamentous laxity. One of the most common alignment problems is coronal knee angulation which combined with tibial torsion, results in a complex deformity. The outcome of surgical correction of these deformities is variable. METHODS: This study used 3-dimensional gait analysis to describe the kinematic deformit…
