How do services offered within opioid treatment programs vary based on state methadone policies?

INTRODUCTION: State regulations governing opioid treatment programs (OTPs) vary widely in their restrictiveness, yet how state policies relate to the availability of services offered within OTPs remains understudied. In this study, we compare the availability of medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) options, psychosocial services, and housing supports across OTPs operating in states with different levels of OTP policy restrictions. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 1501 opioid treatment programs (OTPs) in the United States. Exposures included 11 state-level OTP policies tha

Trauma, empowerment, and resilience: understanding the mental health concerns of people living with human immunodeficiency virus in Manitoba.

INTRODUCTION: Canada has endorsed the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) target to end the HIV epidemic by 2030. However, Canada has reported increases in HIV diagnoses for five consecutive years since 2019, with Manitoba's provincial rates three times the national average. This study examines mental health factors that may impact engagement in care among people living with HIV in Manitoba. METHODS: For this qualitative study, 32 Manitoban women, men and gender-diverse people living with HIV completed semi-structured interviews on barriers and facilitators to HIV care; as wel

The status and influencing factors of pressure on women of childbearing age to have a child again: A cross-sectional study in China.

BACKGROUND: Persistently low fertility and rapid population aging have increased concern regarding subsequent childbearing in China. Although fertility intentions have been widely examined, the multidimensional pressure experienced by parous women when considering another child remains insufficiently understood. METHODS: An online cross-sectional survey was conducted from January to June 2025 among 2097 parous women aged 18-49 years across 21 provinces and four municipalities in China. Subsequent fertility pressure was assessed using a validated 24-item scale. Guided by Becker's quantity-qual

Barriers and facilitators to scaling up medications for opioid use disorder in Kentucky: qualitative perspectives of treatment organization staff.

BACKGROUND: Underutilization of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) remains a persistent obstacle to addressing the opioid epidemic. This study explores MOUD agency experiences with patient census growth as well as multi-level barriers and facilitators to expanding MOUD from the perspectives of agency staff. METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 66 employees representing 30 MOUD agencies in eight Kentucky counties in the United States from December 2022 to June 2023 as part of the HEALing (Helping to End Addiction Long-term®) Communities Study in Kentucky

Evaluating cannabis substitution for alcohol within the context of a canadian managed alcohol program.

INTRODUCTION: Managed Alcohol Programs (MAPs) provide beverage alcohol alongside housing and social supports to mitigate alcohol-related harms among individuals experiencing severe alcohol use disorder (AUD) and unstable housing. MAPs have been shown to stabilize alcohol use, reduce alcohol-related harms, improve quality of life, and decrease emergency service utilization. However, concerns about the long-term health risks associated with high levels of alcohol use have driven interest in cannabis substitution as an additional harm reduction strategy. Given the lower harm profile of cannabis,

Social justice with harm reduction approaches for mothers who use opioids: an international comparative ethnographic study with community engaged methods.

BACKGROUND: Mothers and pregnant women who use opioids are particularly vulnerable. Mothers often fear surveillance, stigma, and loss of custody of their children when seeking treatment. Although opioid agonist therapy (OAT) has been shown to be effective, access varies regionally, and not all mothers can cease using opioids. This study compares outcomes of mothers who use opioids in the UK with universal healthcare and OAT access, and mothers in the U.S. with restricted healthcare and OAT access, focusing on their interactions with services. METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis of two

Structural disadvantage and HIV risk - comparing risk factors between trans women's partnerships with cis men and trans women sexual partners.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about differences in HIV risk for trans women by partner gender, particularly with respect to social determinants of health and partner-level factors that affect behavior. We examined differences in demographic, social determinants, and HIV-related risk behaviors for trans women with cisgender men and trans women sexual partners. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data are from a cross-sectional survey of trans women and their sexual partners conducted between April 2020 and January 2021. Interviews were held remotely via videoconference during shelter-in-place ordinances du

Situational confidence and recovery capital among justice-involved adults receiving medications for opioid use disorder in a jail-based setting.

BACKGROUND: Justice-involved individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) face heightened relapse risks during the reentry period. While medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are effective, long-term recovery also depends on psychological and structural supports, including situational confidence (perceived ability to resist substance use in high-risk situations) and recovery capital (the internal and external resources that support recovery). METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined situational confidence and its association with recovery capital among 107 justice-involved adults recei

Harms associated with injecting in public spaces: a global systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing backlash against harm reduction efforts and the need to understand the risk environments encountered by people who inject drugs (PWID), a quantitative systematic review on public injecting and associated health and drug-related outcomes is lacking. We aimed to summarize the global evidence on the prevalence and harms associated with injecting in public spaces. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, Global Health, and Web of Science from inception to March 21, 2024. We pooled data from included studies using random-effects meta-analyses t

Multisource Coherence Analysis of the First European Multicenter Cohort Study for Cancer Prevention in People Experiencing Homelessness: Data Quality Study.

BACKGROUND: Coherence across sites in multicenter datasets is one substantial data quality dimension for reliable health data reuse, as unexpected heterogeneity in data can lead to biases in data analyses and suboptimal generalization of results. OBJECTIVE: This work aims to characterize and label the data coherence across sites in the first European multicenter dataset for cancer prevention in people and early detection among the homeless population in Europe: coadapting and implementing the health navigator model. This dataset emerged to enable research to address disparities in health chal

Neighborhood evictions, household children, and preterm birth among Black birthing people.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood evictions are a key component of community-level housing instability and disproportionately impact communities of color. Increased neighborhood evictions may be associated with increased preterm birth (PTB). Previous research suggests familial distress as a potential driver of increased PTB among Black birthing parents exposed to high neighborhood eviction rates. In this study, we explore whether the association of neighborhood evictions with PTB differs depending on the presence or absence of children in the household during pregnancy. METHODS: We used information fr

CHIME: Sofosbuvir/Velpatasvir (S/V) for the Treatment of HCV Infection Among Vulnerable Inner-City Residents.

The combination of Sofosbuvir/Velpatasvir(S/V) is approved for the treatment of chronic HCV infection. In registrational trials, cure rates of 95% or more were achieved when administered as one pill per day for a period of 12 weeks, regardless of genotype or disease stage. There is a need to develop and evaluate systems of care in populations excluded from clinical trials. We aim to evaluate the safety and efficacy of S/V in a prospective study of HCV-infected inner-city residents enriched for risk behaviours for non-adherence to therapy, including problematic drug use and unstable housing. Stopping syphilis on the streets: embedding point of care testing within a street outreach nursing service.

Background Nationally, the increase in syphilis notifications over recent years has demonstrated persistent bridging across to wider populations, particularly women of reproductive age. Populations experiencing adverse social determinants, caught in a cycle of marginalisation and social exclusion through mental ill-health, alcohol and drug misuse, and economic and housing stress, have increasingly become susceptible. Methods The aim of this pilot was to develop and implement a protocol for delivering syphilis point of care testing (POCT) through a street-based nursing outreach program, specifi

Outdoor access versus conventional broiler chicken production: Updated review of animal welfare, food safety, and meat quality.

Growing consumer demand for animal welfare and environmental sustainability in the poultry industry is driving the adoption of outdoor access for broiler chickens in the United States. However, shifting to outdoor access from conventional housing may pose tradeoffs for animal welfare, meat quality, and food safety. Research comparing conventional and outdoor access housing on these attributes has not been reviewed for approximately a decade. We reviewed and compared animal welfare, food safety, and meat quality outcomes in conventional versus outdoor access broiler production, focusing on rece

Working from home and mental well-being at different stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This paper analyses the relationship between working from home (WFH) and mental well-being at different stages during the first two critical years of the COVID-19 pandemic, when governments repeatedly imposed lockdowns and enacted WFH mandates to contain the spread of the virus. Using data from a representative survey conducted at four different time periods in 2020 (first lockdown, subsequent gradual reopening), 2021 (further lockdown) and 2022 (restrictions widely lifted) in the 27 EU member states, it examines the changing role of several mediators over time: work-family conflict, family-wo

Intuitive eating in the COVID-19 era: a study with university students in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The recurrence of weight gain is attributed to the homeostatic regulation of hunger and satiety signals, influenced by metabolic state, nutrient availability, and non-homeostatic mechanisms shaped by reinforced consequences from experiences. In response, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch proposed Intuitive Eating (IE) in 1980, countering restrictive diets. IE, inversely correlated with Body Mass Index (BMI), binge eating, and anxiety/depression symptoms, fosters mind-body-food harmony by recognizing hunger and satiety cues. IE encourages meeting physiological, not emotional, needs, pe
