Skin lesions possibly caused by Papillomavirus infections in two four-toed hedgehogs are described. In case 1, there was a papillary mass on the right hind limb. Histologically, the mass was consistent with a viral papilloma. In the other case, multifocal papillary masses with erosions and ulcers were found throughout the body, mainly on the extremities. Histology showed continuative lesions composed of acanthosis, Bowenoid in situ carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma, with abrupt transitions between the lesions. In both cases, keratinocytes in the granular layer infrequently had features of

Congenital cataracts (CC) are responsible for approximately one-tenth of childhood blindness cases globally. Here, we report an African American family with a recessively inherited form of CC. The proband demonstrated decreased visual acuity and bilateral cataracts, with nuclear and cortical cataracts in the right and left eye, respectively. Exome sequencing revealed a novel homozygous variant (c.563A > G; p.(Asn188Ser)) in GJA3, which was predicted to be pathogenic by structural analysis. Dominantly inherited variants in GJA3 are known to cause numerous types of cataracts in various populatio

Human Brucellosis is a bacterial infection caused by species of Brucella, which can involve multiple organs and tissues. Spinal epidural abscesses are rare and may be complicated by potentially life threatening neurological or vascular compromise. We report a 21-year-old female with spinal brucellosis complicated by lumbar spondylodiscitis, epidural abscess and a large right-sided paraspinal abscess extended from L4 to sacrum. The diagnosis was based on laboratory and magnetic resonance imaging results, symptoms and her occupation. Ultrasound guided needle aspiration and percutaneous abscess d

A 61-year-old woman was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis 12 years ago and received multiple treatment regimens before achieving symptomatic stability with methotrexate plus tocilizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody against the IL-6 receptor, about 2 years prior to the current presentation. Sixteen months after tocilizumab initiation, she exhibited dysarthria and disorientation; five months later, she was hospitalized with movement difficulties. Her neurological symptoms deteriorated thereafter, accompanied by enlarged cerebral white matter lesions on magnetic resonance imaging. A biopsy

Here we report the identification of two novel mutations in a previously asymptomatic young man who suffered an out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest. During following evaluation, diagnosis of early stage dilated cardiomyopathy was established, while electrocardiogram monitoring showed frequent complex ventricular arrhythmias, incomplete right bundle branch block and prolonged QT duration. No reversible causes explaining the clinical presentation were established and an automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator was therefore implanted. Heterozygous mutations in human protein coding gene

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection whose etiologic agent is Echinococcus granulosus. Human is an accidental intermediate host and the most common site is the liver. The brain involvement is unusual and up to 75% of cases are described in the pediatric population. We present six children with cerebral hydatid disease admitted to the Pediatric Hospital J.P. Garrahan. All had neurological involvement on admission. The images showed single cystic lesion in the brain. They did not present involvement in other organs. Serology was negative in all cases. Medical and surgical treatment in all ca

This report aimed to present the postmortem finding of toluene in a homicide victim buried under the ground for six years. The bones of the skull and limbs were exposed, and the remainder of the subcutaneous tissues, brain and heart had formed into adipocere. There were numerous fractures in the skull and the anterior side of the ribs. A cardiac contusion extending into the cavity of the right ventricle was also observed. No other obvious injuries were identified on the body. The concentration of toluene in the bone marrow within the head of the humerus was 58.4 μg/g. The cause of death was su

In December 2011, a 42-year-old male farmer was admitted to a hospital in Sanandaj (Western Iran) with fever and anemia in order to check whether he suffered from some infectious diseases. During the first 3 days after admission, the patient gradually developed progressive oliguria, fever, abdominal pain in the right upper quadrant, leukocytosis with toxic granulation, petechiae and ecchymosis, oral bleeding, and vomiting. The sonographic findings revealed splenomegaly and an increase in the thickness of the gall bladder wall. In order to manage the patient and taking into consideration the mo

In rodents, the Robo1 gene regulates midline crossing of major nerve tracts, a fundamental property of the mammalian CNS. However, the neurodevelopmental function of the human ROBO1 gene remains unknown, apart from a suggested role in dyslexia. We therefore studied axonal crossing with a functional approach, based on magnetoencephalography, in 10 dyslexic individuals who all share the same rare, weakly expressing haplotype of the ROBO1 gene. Auditory-cortex responses were recorded separately to left- and right-ear sounds that were amplitude modulated at different frequencies. We found impaired

While freedom of movement has been one of the most highly respected human right across the EU, there are various aspects which come into play which still need to be resolved for this to be achieved in practice. One of these key issues is cross border health care. Indeed, there is an increasing awareness of standardisation of health service provision and cross border collaboration in the EU. However, certain groups particularly children may be at risk of suboptimal treatment as a result. We present the case of a child patient which highlights the complexity of this matter spanning family law, h

Fasciola hepatica, a liver fluke of livestock, rarely presents as chronic biliary tract infection in humans. We report a 38-year-old woman from Ethiopia who presented with right upper quadrant pain and a dilated common bile duct on ultrasound and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) without other abnormalities. She was suspected to have type II sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. She underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and had a fluke, diagnosed as Fasciola hepatica, in the common hepatic duct. This report confirms the diagnostic and therapeutic role of ERC

The case of an early retroperitoneal abdominal pregnancy implanted on inferior vena cava successfully resected through laparoscopic surgery is reported here. A 28-year-old woman presented with vaginal spotting and amenorrhrea for 7(+5) weeks. Although a diagnosis of right cornual ectopic pregnancy by transvaginal ultrasound was made and a laparoscopic wedge resection of the left uterine cornus was performed, the beta-human chorionic gonadotropin level remained high. Abdominal ultrasonography and computerized tomography of the abdomen demonstrated a 3.4x2.6 cm sized hypervascular cystic mass al

An 8-year-old, male, mongrel dog developed severe cough and anorexia and died within 3 months. Autopsy revealed an invasive grayish-white mass in the right kidney and multiple nodules in the lungs, thoracic wall, and spleen. Histologically, the renal mass and the other nodules were mainly composed of papillotubular structures lined by oval-to-polygonal pleomorphic cells. The cells were reactive with DBA, PNA, and UEA-1 lectins and positive for vimentin but negative for CD10 and high molecular weight cytokeratin. Because of its histological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical similarities w

Microphthalmia and anophthalmia are at the severe end of the spectrum of abnormalities in ocular development. Mutations in several genes have been involved in syndromic and non-syndromic anophthalmia. Previously, RAX recessive mutations were implicated in a single patient with right anophthalmia, left microphthalmia and sclerocornea. In this study, we report the findings of novel compound heterozygous RAX mutations in a child with bilateral anophthalmia. Both mutations are located in exon 3. c.664delT is a frameshifting deletion predicted to introduce a premature stop codon (p.Ser222ArgfsX62),

OBJECTIVE: Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) underlies most of the neurological morbidity including visual-perceptual deficits in survivors of premature birth. However, it is unknown whether and, if so, how PVL affects functional cortical activity.
METHODS: Here, we assessed changes in the magnetoencephalographic (MEG) response to visual displays depicting human locomotion in adolescents who were born premature with magnetic resonance imaging signs of PVL.
RESULTS: Dynamics of MEG activity parallel behavioral deficits. Early (140-170 milliseconds) brain activation over the right parietal co

We examined neuroprotective effects of growth inhibitory factor (GIF) on injured adult rat facial motoneurons. The right facial nerves of adult rats were avulsed and removed from the stylomastoid foramen, and an adenoviral vector encoding rat GIF and Myc epitope (AxCArGIFM) were injected into the facial canal. Animals treated with AxCArGIFM showed intense immunolabeling for GIF/Myc in injured facial motoneurons. Treatment with AxCArGIFM after avulsion significantly prevented the loss of injured facial motoneurons, improved choline acetyltransferase immunoreactivity and prevented the induction

Patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are prone to develop pulmonary infections like nocardiosis. It is often misdiagnosed as pulmonary tuberculosis since the manifestations are similar. A twenty-seven years old male presented with fever, cough with expectoration and weight loss for two months. Chest radiograph showed opacity in the right mid zones. Sputum smears were negative for acid fast bacilli (AFB) and revealed gram positive branching filamentous organisms resembling Nocardia species. Subsequently, Nocardia was grown on sputum culture. HIV antibody was positive by EL

A spontaneous cerebellar malformation was found in a 32-day-old male Fischer 344 rat. The cerebellar malformation was composed of a vermis defect and markedly dilated fourth ventricle. The cerebellar hemispheres were separated, with the left hemisphere being smaller than the right one. Degenerative/inflammatory lesions consisting of macrophage/lymphocyte infiltration, spheroidal calcium depositions, and astrocytic gliosis were seen adjacent to the cerebral aqueduct. Abnormally arranged hyperplastic ependymal cells were observed beneath the fourth ventricle in the medulla oblongata. The gross f

We report a case of primary cardiac lymphoma in a patient who was not infected with human immunodeficiency virus and had symptoms suggestive of upper gastrointestinal (GI) disease. Examination revealed no GI abnormalities. Echocardiography, prompted by sudden development of congestive heart failure, revealed a large right atrial mass. Cardiac biopsy followed by staging evaluation indicated primary cardiac non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. After chemotherapy was begun, the tumor shrunk and GI symptoms resolved, suggesting an etiologic relationship by a referred pain mechanism. Unusual features of our cas

Human Chagas' disease, caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, is associated with pathological processes whose mechanisms are not known. To address this question, T cell lines were developed from chronic chagasic patients peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and cloned. These T cell clones (TCC) were analyzed phenotypically with monoclonal antibodies by the use of a fluorescence microscope. The surface phenotype of the TCC from the asymptomatic patient were predominantly CD4 positive (86%). On the contrary, the surface phenotype CD8 was predominant in the TCC from the patients sufferin
