Tumour Necrosis Factor alpha (TNFα) blockers are common and effective treatments for several autoimmune diseases but can be associated with neuroinflammatory events. We describe the disease course of ten patients who developed CNS demyelinating events while exposed to TNFα blockers. We divided them into two groups: eight patients with Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis and two isolated optic neuritis. Sixty-three natalizumab-treated patients with relapsing multiple sclerosis were screened for JC polyomavirus (JCV) viruria. Urinary-positive patients were longitudinally sampled for up to 24 weeks. Acquired coagulation factor deficiency is a rare disorder that occurs in patients with drug reactions, malignancy and collagen diseases as well as during pregnancy. Most cases are caused by factor VIII inhibitors. We herein describe the case of a 61-year-old Japanese man with acquired factor V inhibitor who developed symptoms 11 days after lung surgery for empyema. The patient required mechanical ventilation to treat acute respiratory failure due to severe pulmonary hemorrhage. He responded poorly to steroid pulse therapy; however, treatment with rituximab was successful.

A number of unrelated cutaneous adverse events have been rarely associated with administration of infliximab. This drug has been used to control erythema nodosum when the latter was associated with Crohn disease. We herein report the paradoxical occurrence of erythema nodosum, verified by repeated challenges, following infliximab infusion given for ankylosing spondylitis. Despite this side effect, the patient elected to continue therapy due to a high degree of efficacy.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a severe disease that can develop in immunocompromised patients. Antitumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) treatment of rheumatoid arthritis can result in clinical benefits, but with an increased risk of opportunistic infections. Leishmania infection in patients treated with TNF-alpha antagonists is extremely rare; for this reason, we report a patient with VL after etanercept treatment who had an unfavorable outcome.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate therapeutic effect of high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) for early management of ABO hemolytic disease of the newborn (ABO-HDN).
METHODS: A total of 121 cases with ABO-HDN were randomly divided into treatment group (n=61) and control group (n=60). In order to investigate the progression to AIDS, we studied 39 patients with hemophilia ranging presently in age from 8 to 20 years, who had been positive for HIV antibodies for a mean of 36 months.
