Cerebral microbleeds are not associated with postoperative delirium and postoperative cognitive dysfunction in older individuals.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral microbleeds (CMB) occur in the context of cerebral small vessel disease. Other brain MRI markers of cerebral small vessel disease are associated with the occurrence of postoperative delirium (POD) and postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD), but for CMB this is unknown. We aimed to study the association between CMB and the occurrence of POD and POCD in older individuals. METHODS: The current study consists of 65 patients (72±5 years) from the BIOCOG study, which is a prospective, observational study of patients who underwent an elective surgery of at least 60 minutes.

Apathy in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Its Psychological Correlates: Comparison With Individuals With Schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Apathy, defined as reduced goal-directed behavior, is a frequent symptom in mental and neurological disorders but has been poorly studied in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The primary aim of this study was to examine levels of apathy between individuals with OCD, healthy control subjects, and individuals with schizophrenia, a mental disorder with high levels of apathy. The second aim was to assess whether the psychological factors that have been previously shown as underlying apathy in other mental disorders were associated with apathy in patients with OCD. M

Individual differences in basic numerical skills: The role of executive functions and motor skills.

The aim of the current study was to explore individual differences in basic numerical skills in a normative sample of 151 kindergarteners (mean age = 6.45 years). Whereas previous research claims a substantial link between executive functions and basic numerical skills, motor abilities have been put forward to explain variance in numerical skills. Regarding the current study, these two assumptions have been combined, revealing interesting results. Namely, executive functions (inhibition, switching, and visuospatial working memory) were found to relate to symbolic numerical skills, and motor sk

Individuals with familial hypercholesterolemia and cardiovascular events have higher circulating Lp(a) levels.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity. Increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level is its major risk factor. Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic disorder characterized by elevated LDL-C since birth and subsequent premature CVD. There is a heterogeneity in the CVD onset in patients with FH. This is potentially due to the presence of other independent risk factors. Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is an LDL-like particle and represents a strong risk factor for CVD. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to understand the contribution of Lp(

Amyloid burden accelerates white matter degradation in cognitively normal elderly individuals.

Alterations in parietal and temporal white matter microstructure derived from diffusion tensor imaging occur in preclinical and clinical Alzheimer's disease. Amyloid beta (Aβ) deposition and such white matter alterations are two pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease. However, the relationship between these pathologies is not yet understood, partly since conventional diffusion MRI methods cannot distinguish between cellular and extracellular processes. Thus, we studied Aβ-associated longitudinal diffusion MRI changes in Aβ-positive (N = 21) and Aβ-negative (N = 51) cognitively normal el

Effects of Pair Versus Individual Housing on Performance, Health, and Behavior of Dairy Calves.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of pair versus individual housing on performance, health, and behavior of dairy calves. Thirty female Holstein dairy calves were assigned to individual (n = 10) or pair housing (n = 10 pairs). The results showed that both treatments had a similar starter intake and average daily gain (ADG) during the preweaning period. During weaning and postweaning periods, paired calves had a higher starter intake, and the ADG of paired calves continued to increase but calves housed individually experienced a growth check. Paired calves showed higher diarrhea

Caring Interactions in Secondary Prevention Programs: A Qualitative Inquiry of Individuals With Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: With Parkinson's disease (PD) prevalence rates steadily increasing and long-term adherence to regular physical activity and exercise often difficult to achieve, it is imperative to investigate factors promoting adherence to secondary prevention programs (SPP) that help limit the progression of motor and nonmotor signs and symptoms of the disease. Caring interactions between patients and their rehabilitation team may be particularly germane to individuals with PD, given the physical and psychosocial issues that often accompany this disease (eg, loss of physical function,

Family Caregivers' Experiences with Dying and Bereavement of Individuals with Motor Neuron Disease in India.

Motor neuron disease (MND) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. Ideal management plan in MND includes palliative care initiated from the time of diagnosis. At present, most of the neurodegenerative conditions are cared for at home. Neuropalliative care is an emerging concept in India and social workers are integral team members in this process. The primary aims of the study were to explore (a) the caregivers' experiences of the end-of-life stage, and (b) the sources of support for individuals and their caregivers with MND at the end-of-life stage. In-depth interviews were conducted with

Resting-state prefrontal EEG biomarkers in correlation with MMSE scores in elderly individuals.

We investigated whether cognitive decline could be explained by resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) biomarkers measured in prefrontal regions that reflect the slowing of intrinsic EEG oscillations. In an aged population dwelling in a rural community (total = 496, males = 165, females = 331), we estimated the global cognitive decline using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and measured resting-state EEG parameters at the prefrontal regions of Fp1 and Fp2 in an eyes-closed state. Using a tertile split method, the subjects were classified as T3 (MMSE 28-30, N = 162), T2 (MMSE 25-27,

A Smartphone Attention Bias App for Individuals With Addictive Disorders: Feasibility and Acceptability Study.

BACKGROUND: Conventional psychology therapies are unable to address automatic biases that result in individuals relapsing into their substance use disorder. Advances in experimental psychology have led to a better understanding of attention and approach biases and methods to modify these biases. Several studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of bias modification among clinical cohorts. The advances in mobile health technologies have allowed remote delivery of these interventions. To date, there is a lack of studies examining bias modification in a substance-using non-Western sample. OBJE

Automated Verbal and Non-verbal Speech Analysis of Interviews of Individuals with Schizophrenia and Depression.

Schizophrenia and depression are the two most common mental disorders associated with negative symptoms that contribute to poor functioning and quality of life for millions of patients globally. This study is part of a larger research project. The overall aim of the project is to develop an automated objective pipeline that aids clinical diagnosis and provides more insights into symptoms of mental illnesses. In our previous work, we have analyzed non-verbal cues and linguistic cues of individuals with schizophrenia. In this study, we extend our work to include participants with depression. Pow

Decreased Seroreactivity in Individuals Initiating Antiretroviral Therapy during Acute HIV Infection.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) during acute HIV infection (AHI) interrupts viral dynamics and may delay the emergence of serological markers targeted by current HIV screening and confirmatory assays, thus creating challenges for correctly classifying HIV infection status. The performance of three HIV antigen/antibody combination (HIV Ag/Ab Combo) assays (the Bio-Rad GS, Abbott Architect, and Bio-Rad BioPlex 2200 assays) was evaluated with samples collected from RV254/South East Asia Research Collaboration in HIV 010 (RV254/SEARCH010) study (Bangkok, Thailand) participants at weeks 12 and 24 foll

Impaired decision-making and time perception in individuals with stroke: Behavioral and neural correlates.

Several studies have demonstrated that stroke subjects present impairment of functions related to decision-making and timing, involving the information processing in the neural circuits of the cerebellum in association with the prefrontal cortex. This review is aimed to identify the gaps, and demonstrate a better understanding of decision-making and timing functions in the patients with stroke. Electronic literature database was searched and the findings of relevant studies were used to explore the mechanisms of decision-making and timing in patients with stroke, as well as the circuit connect
