Perioperative Oral decontamination and ImmunoNuTrition (POINT) to prevent postoperative pulmonary complications in elderly patients scheduled for elective non-cardiac surgeries: protocol for a multicentre, randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Elderly patients are known to be vulnerable to postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs), especially pneumonia. Apart from elder age, preoperative pulmonary diseases, anaemia, malnutrition, dysphagia and frailty may all be contributing factors to PPCs. Poor oral hygiene is a risk factor for PPC as well, as oropharyngeal microflora might be introduced to the lower respiratory tract following endotracheal intubation for general anaesthesia during surgery. Immune regulation, nutrition supplementation and improvement of oropharyngeal microflora might regulate immune and stress res

Effects on recurrence and quAlity-of-life of iliac vein Stenting angioplasTy for patients with Varicose veins combined with severE Iliac veiN compression: a protocol for a prospective, multicentre, randomised clinical trial (EAST-VEIN trial).

INTRODUCTION: Both varicose veins (VV) and iliac vein compression syndrome (IVCS) can cause skin damage and functional impairment in the lower extremities, and these issues often coexist. However, the question of whether IVCS exacerbates VV progression and leads to differences in the surgical outcomes of therapy for VV remains unanswered. Therefore, no high-level evidence-based medical data is available to support the concomitant use of iliac vein stenting in patients with VV and severe IVCS, and treatment protocols vary significantly among different centres. This study will investigate the ef

Electroacupuncture versus sham electroacupuncture in treating low anterior resection syndrome after rectal cancer surgery: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS), a frequent postoperative complication of rectal resection, has been shown to significantly impact patients' quality of life. Electroacupuncture (EA), a non-pharmaceutical treatment, ameliorates gastrointestinal symptoms and promotes bowel movement. However, high-quality clinical evidence is lacking. This study aimed to determine whether EA can improve LARS symptoms compared with sham electroacupuncture (SA). STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This multicenter, randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial will be carried out across the outpatient clinics o

Clostridioides difficile recovered from hospital patients, livestock and dogs in Nigeria share near-identical genome sequences.

Genomic data on Clostridioides difficile from the African continent are currently lacking, resulting in the region being under-represented in global analyses of C. difficile infection (CDI) epidemiology. For the first time in Nigeria, we utilized whole-genome sequencing and phylogenetic tools to compare C. difficile isolates from diarrhoeic human patients (n=142), livestock (n=38), poultry manure (n=5) and dogs (n=9) in the same geographic area (Makurdi, north-central Nigeria) and relate them to the global C. difficile population. In addition, selected isolates were tested for antimicrobial su

Investigating the relationship between Pfkelch13 mutations and response to artemisinin-based treatment for uncomplicated falciparum malaria: a protocol for a systematic review and individual patient data meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) remain the WHO-recommended treatment for uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria. However, the emergence and spread of artemisinin resistance (ART-R) threatens ACT efficacy. ART-R is phenotypically expressed as delayed parasite clearance, which can facilitate ACT partner drug resistance. ART-R has been causally linked to specific mutations in the Pfkelch13 gene. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The systematic review and associated meta-analysis aim to determine the correlation between Pfkelch13 (alleles present in the Kelch13 gene region o

Effect of the index of consciousness 2 on intraoperative opioid dosage in ovarian cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: For ovarian cancer patients undergoing preoperative Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy (NACT), the toxicity of chemotherapeutic agents may cause hepatic and renal function impairment, altered sensitivity of the central nervous system or abnormal pain perception thresholds. These changes can further affect the metabolism and efficacy of intraoperative anaesthetics. However, the optimal intraoperative opioid dosage regimen for this specific patient population remains unclear. Currently, nociceptive stimulation monitoring technology has achieved certain progress in guiding intraoperative opio

Enhancing bladder cancer awareness and knowledge through multifaceted community engagement in Egypt: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Bladder cancer (BC) poses a significant health challenge in Egypt, constituting 16% of male cancers and resulting in over 7,900 deaths annually. Globally, BC stands as the tenth most prevalent cancer with an anticipated 72.8% rise in new cases by 2040. As BC is an important health problem, early detection and prevention are crucial for improving outcomes. This could be done by increasing the disease's awareness through structured campaigns for the community, increasing their insights about the risk factors of the disease; most commonly, smoking as well as other risk factors as expo
