BACKGROUND: Empirical evidence for the validity of the diagnostic label disintegrative psychosis is sparse. The issue of whether it is a separate form of infantile autism is unresolved.

Coping, social support and quality of life (QOL) were examined in 120 HIV+ people (mean age = 37). The sample came from ambulatory clinics and drop-in centres in Toronto: 29% had AIDS, 35% were HIV symptomatic, and 35% were asymptomatic. Information was gathered from self-administered questionnaires. Respondents had good levels of social support and used a variety of coping strategies. 408 elderly primary care attenders were screened using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and the 30-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). 36% were identified as 'cases' on the GDS and 32% on the GHQ. A retrospective study of 90 adolescents admitted to a district general hospital after deliberate drug overdoses was carried out.
